24.01.2022 I complimented my 12 year old son this morning on how responsible he had been of late with getting himself ready for school in the mornings(a welcome change). He replied ‘I’m not doing it for my sake. I’m doing it for my future.’ He went on to say that while he is not getting any benefits from it right now, that working hard now will help create a good future for himself. Wow! Great wisdom.
24.01.2022 Sometimes what we think we want, isn't truly what we want at all. I've spent the better part of this year pursuing a goal which I thought would give me purpose, with limited success. Now I've been blessed with such an opportunity and I've wrestled with the decision about whether to take it or not. I sought council from a wise friend. She old me to think about my 'big rock's and where I saw myself in 5 years times and then to consider how this opportunity would either support ...or diminish these things. In undertaking this activity, I realised that true self leadership was needed in making this decision and that this path doesn't fit with my purpose! Sure, it feeds my ego (the brain loves a status reward) and provides certainty (again another key motivator for our brain), but to my surprise, it's not how I really want to be contributing at this point in my life. According to research, 'we don’t have to worry about finding our one true purpose; we can find purpose in different areas of life. In fact, purpose isn’t something we find at all. It’s something we can cultivate through deliberate action and reflection, and it will naturally wax and wane throughout our lives.' How's aligned is what your doing with your purpose?
24.01.2022 This helps explain why time feels so weird in 2020
23.01.2022 I was talking with a Leader recently who said that they are having trouble switching off their brains at night. This is a great little technique if you want to achieve a few still moments of calm.
21.01.2022 When I first started practicing mindfulness through meditation, I would feel physically sick in my stomach, so turbulent and busy was my mind. With practice I am starting to get a better handle on my thoughts and emotions, but it remains a work in progress. With the known benefits of mindfulness can bring with lowering stress levels and building resilience and creativity, perhaps we should be taking the lead from some well known companies and training our people in mindfulness, and making the space to practice at work?
19.01.2022 Ken Blanchard on Servant Leadership reminds us that we 'have to have intention to build a loving, caring culture, where people are supported, where they're praised, where they're redirected...' when needed. It seems to me that this again leads back to the leadership accountability and the skill of empathy. Thankyou Ken Blanchard for your wisdom. How can you show your people that you care?
17.01.2022 Recently I received some tragic family news. As the numbness passed I grappled with trying to name how I was feeling. I realised that it wasn't just one feeling - it was many. I was reminded of this clip from 6 Seconds which talked about how in times of change, we can identify the big feelings of fear (or loss). Using our EQ, it's helpful to ask ourselves 'what else am I feeling' to notice the feelings that can help us to move forward.
15.01.2022 In the past I was told things like: 'You're too soft'. 'You're too bleeding heart'. 'People should keep their personal problems out of the workforce'. Now I'm told things like: 'You form trusting relationships', 'People open up to you'. 'You're so strengths based'. What I thought was a weakness is now something I know to be a strength. it's empathy. Research tells us empathy is the key interaction skill leaders need, and is the most impactful in positively influencing emp...loyee performance. Source: DDI High Resolution Leadership DDI 2016.
14.01.2022 I was talking with a Manager who considered it a weakness to display emotion during a conversation with a team member. I believe it is a great strength to be real with others. What do think? #leadership
13.01.2022 I’m certain you’ve heard the adage that ‘people don’t leave their jobs, they leave their managers’ and you’ve likely left a manager or more in your own career! You also probably know research tells us that at any given time, 20-25% of your workforce is fully disengaged and a further 50% are only moderately engaged. But did you know that 70% of the variance in employee engagement comes down to their manager. Improving leadership at all levels is the key to employee engagement and therefore productivity.
13.01.2022 So how does a person develop their leadership skills in empathy? I hear you say. Well here are some very practical steps
12.01.2022 I've been banging on a lot lately about EQ and the skill of empathy for leadership. Here are some numbers showing empathy is considered the most critical leadership performance driver. Good news - if empathy doesn't come easy for you - it's a skill that can be learned. Source: 2020 State of Workplace Empathy, The Businessolver
11.01.2022 Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and those of the people around you. It's essential for leadership success. This article demysterfies what EI is and provides clear ideas for developing these critical leadership skills. I hope you enjoy the article.
11.01.2022 I’ve been thinking a lot about the notion of accountable leaders and the practical ways leaders demonstrate accountability. This article sets out 5 concrete ways which are easily achievable. Check it out.
10.01.2022 I feel so saddened each time I watch the news and see how people continue to turn on each other. If only we could find more compassion and stop ‘othering’ and remember we are all just people.
08.01.2022 Great tool to improve emotional literacy
05.01.2022 I'm starting to see some noticeable improvements working with leaders to enhance their own EI. Good little article that explains why EI in leadership drives employee engagement.
03.01.2022 Thought for today
