14.01.2022 This morning the Australian government will make an apology to the victims and survivors of sexual abuse in institutions. Historically, we have seen that apologies from governments often amount to nothing for victims and survivors. Sometimes the apology does more damage than good, especially if we are constantly reminded of our pain because it’s being talked about so much. My own family has been deeply impacted by institutional sexual abuse. It’s part of the reason I became ...a therapist, and I understand how far-reaching the impacts are. Sexual abuse doesn’t stop with the victim; the effects often filter through families over generations. Drug and alcohol use is just one of many ways people learn to survive this pain. My support and care goes to anyone who is impacted by the apology today. Personally, I am wary and somewhat skeptical about whether Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten can do a good enough job, but whatever they say, my hope for those of us who are impacted is that we remember our pain is real and justified and doesn’t require an apology from anyone to be legitimate. If you are struggling today, please reach out to someone who cares, myself included. Be gentle with yourself, look after yourself and honour your experience in whichever way feels right for you. In solidarity, Amber

05.01.2022 Hello there! My apologies about my lack of presence on Facebook - last year, I joined some colleagues and opened a counselling clinic called Sydney Addictions Recovery, and have been using that page to communicate. This week, given the current challenges we are all experiencing with CoViD-19, I have been going Live on Facebook and Instagram to share some self-soothing techniques to help manage worry and stress. I’d love you to join me! You can like our page www.facebook.com/...sydneyaddictionsrecovery, or if you prefer, head over to Instagram at www.instagram.com/baxtertherapydog I hope you are keeping as well as can be during this very uncertain time. My colleagues and I will continue to offer free resources to support our community, but if you need extra support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re offering Zoom counselling sessions for safe social distancing, and would be glad to help you navigate this rough patch. Sending my warmth and solidarity to you all, Amber
