Androgens (male hormone testosterone), causes the skin thickness in a mans skin to be approximately 25% thicker than a womans skin. As men age, their skin gradually becomes thinner, whereas a womans skin thins after menopause particularly after the age of 50.... The texture of a mans skin is rougher due to the thickness of the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum). Sebum (oil) levels in a mans skin are also higher than womens due to androgens (male hormone) stimulation after purberty. This can also contribute to why acne in men lasts longer than women. Men, regardless of their age have higher amount of collagen density compared to women, which is the ratio of collagen to skin thickness. Signs of aging in adults such as wrinkles, skin laxity are relative to the collagen content in the skin. Both Men and Women lose about 1% of their collagen each year after the age of 30. For women during the first five years of menopause this increases quite significantly. Because facial hair in men gives increased amount of sweat secretions when body temperature is increased, more than twice as much as women, a mans skin appears to be better hydrated. The health of a mans skin is as significant as a womans skin, although there are differences in our skin, attention and care needs to be the same regardless. A mans skin may be tougher and resilient, regardless of our sex we are still exposed to environmental and internal health issues that affect our skin, therefore treatments need to be designed on an individual diagnosis.
