25.01.2022 This year, despite everything, we will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with our families in Beirut. Meet us in Mar Mikhael Al-Ashrafieh, and let us remember... the true meaning of Christmas, draw a smile on children's faces and spread joy in the hearts of our friends who were affected by Beirut blast. We will meet every day from the 18th till the 23rd of December, behind Mar Mikhael Church in Ashrafieh from 5 to 10 PM. With adherence to all preventive measures and social distancing.

25.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER LEBANON INDEPENDENCE DAY 2020... On this day each year, we recall the historic events of 1943 when Lebanon, a rich trading and cultural centre, entered a new era as an independent Republic. Australia’s relations with Lebanon have deepened over generations, and been strengthened by ongoing people-to-people links. Australians of Lebanese descent have enriched our nation with creativity, generosity and dedication. Their contributions have helped to make our home the most successful multicultural nation on Earth. In the wake of the tragic explosion in Beirut in August and the ongoing global health crisis, I appreciate this year’s Independence Day will be muted by sorrow, and spent in commemoration. We stand in solidarity with the people of Lebanon, and their friends and family here in Australia. In times like these, people draw from the well of compassion, peace and respect, values which are so firmly lived out by Lebanese Australians. This is why I have great confidence the Lebanese people will get through these challenges, as they have done throughout history. On this day, the Lebanese Australian community can reflect with pride on their resilience and unity in the face of adversity; with appreciation for their enduring values of family and community; and with hope that collective strength will be found to rebuild. The Hon Scott Morrison MP Prime Minister of Australia

23.01.2022 Year of Maronite Outreach First Sunday after the Holy Cross Dear Brothers and Sisters,... Our Maronite Church has now entered a new season in our liturgical calendar the Season of the Glorious Cross. The Gospels of this season direct us towards suffering and the cross as instrument of our salvation. In this Sunday’s Gospel, we learn that two of the apostles, James and John, asked the Lord to be seated at His right hand and left hand. It seems to us to be a fairly bold request. But we should not forget that just before they make this request, St Mark tells us that as the apostles were going up to Jerusalem, the Lord took them aside and told them what would happen to Him: that He would be betrayed, condemned to death, mocked, scourged, spat on, and killed, but that on the third day He would rise again. So when James and John made their request, they knew that Jesus was to suffer and also to overcome that suffering. They wished to be associated with the Lord as those closest to Him and sharing in the rule of His Kingdom. There was nothing greater that they could ask for. Our Lord then tells them that they would share in the fullness of His experience: they would undergo the sufferings of both soul and body which He would face. James and John knew that the Lord meant they would suffer before entering into His glory, but they did not understand how much. They bravely replied to Him that they were able to share in what He was to suffer. This was a great privilege. We cannot understand this passage if we do not see that the Lord and His apostles also saw being able to share in His sufferings as being a great privilege and a reward. This is the opposite of how we think of suffering. The Lord then taught them this great truth, that suffering prepares us for the Kingdom of Heaven, by purifying us of selfishness and self-attachment, for whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant. And whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. The Lord led the way by His example. This suggests to us a way to make this Gospel reading practical for us: we can change the way we even think about service. Service is not a chore or something to be avoided, it is a sign of responsibility. And service for the sake of Our Lord and His Gospel is a sign of responsibility in the Kingdom of Heaven. Friends, this Season of the Cross is an opportunity for us to reflect on the great love of the Lord demonstrated on the Cross. We must respond to this love which goes so far as to give his life for us by being ready as well to love Christ to the very end. And it is this love for Christ that will allow us to be the slaves of our brothers and sisters. It is this love for Christ that will allow us, too, to seek first the happiness of our brothers and sisters through unity and solidarity.

15.01.2022 "Back to School - Beirut Appeal" and brief report from H.E. Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay on the current situation in Lebanon.

15.01.2022 Dear Brothers and Sisters, In a few days, I will be travelling to Lebanon to partake in the Annual Spiritual Retreat and Synod of Maronite Bishops called for by... His Eminence and Beatitude Mar Bechara Boutros Cardinal Rai. The visit will also be an opportunity for me to receive an update about the situation in Beirut and all of Lebanon from the various charities we are supporting through your generous donations and contributions. I am grateful to our Maronite community in Australia and our friends from other communities who have donated and continue to generously donate to the people of Lebanon. As you are aware, our Lebanese brothers and sisters have been tragically affected by the horrific explosion at the port of Beirut on the 4th of August, and a severe political, social and economic crisis, in addition to the worldwide pandemic. Lebanon is now facing its worst economic situation in three decades, with soaring unemployment and cost of living, resulting in devastation to the lives of many. I now provide you with an update of the initiatives undertaken in our Eparchy and associated charities for Lebanon over the last 10 months. In December last year, we launched the Lebanon Christmas Appeal in a collaboration with Maronites on Mission Australia, Our Lady of Lebanon Heaven on Earth, and the Maronite Catholic Society. This appeal raised approximately $123,000, used to distribute much needed 2755 food hampers to families throughout many villages in Lebanon. A direct cash donation of $20,000 was also made to Caritas Lebanon to assist in the work they are doing, and in May, a bulk food donation of over $7,000 was made to the Psychiatric Hospital of the Cross, the mental health institution run by the Sisters of the Cross. This appeal has closed and all the funds raised were donated or used to purchase food hampers. In June of this year, our Eparchy together with Maronites on Mission Australia and the Maronite Council launched the campaign Lebanon Wheat Appeal, aiming to send free grain to farmers in diverse regions of Lebanon to be cultivated in the sowing season. The campaign has thus far raised $102,000 enabling us to purchase and, with the assistance of the Maronite Church in Lebanon, distribute 213 tonnes of wheat to many regions and villages of Lebanon. The distribution of the grain started in September and farmers will be sowing it in the month of October. Following the explosion at the port of Beirut, and even whilst in the midst of a stage 4 COVID-19 lockdown, the community of Our Lady of Lebanon in Melbourne did not forget our brothers and sisters in Lebanon. The parish raised enough money to send 140 tonnes of flour to Caritas Lebanon to aid with the shortage of flour due to the damage of the wheat silos in Beirut. Thank you to our Maronite community in Victoria! In August 2020, Our Lady of Lebanon Heaven on Earth received a list of urgent medical needs from Caritas Lebanon for the sick people in their care. Within a couple of weeks, the first lot of medications, valued at around $28,000, was sent via air freight to Lebanon. And a second shipment, with medications valued at around $35,000, is also being prepared to be sent by the end of September. On the next day following the explosion in Beirut, our Eparchy and Maronites on Mission Australia launched the Beirut Disaster Relief Appeal. To date, the appeal has raised just over $495,000, with $215,000 being allocated to home restoration projects in collaboration with Solidarity Lebanon, and a further $90,000 going to the teams of Maronites on Mission in Lebanon who are also working on fixing damaged homes and businesses. 1000 mattresses for displaced people were purchased and distributed to our Lebanese brothers and sisters sleeping on concrete floors. Further, we provided financial donations to Philokalia and other medical and charitable organisations in Lebanon who were in need of urgent assistance. These purchases and donations come to a total of approximately $107,000. A detailed report about this appeal will be made available when all the funds are allocated. You can continue to contribute to this cause by visiting maronitesonmission.com. In collaboration with Maronites on Mission Australia and Heaven on Earth, the Eparchy called for a collection of essential items to be shipped to Lebanon. The response was overwhelming and the generosity of our community has exceeded all our expectations, filling 3 large shipping containers. With the support of the Diocesan Faith and Light Committee, we will be adding a fourth container to the shipment including essential equipment for people with special needs, such as specialist beds and wheelchairs. We especially thank Maersk Shipping for the donation of the containers and their shipping to Lebanon. In addition to all the appeals, many generous donations were sent directly to the Maronite Eparchy following the disaster in Beirut, totalling approximately $90,000. After consultation with the College of Consultors, it was decided to allocate these funds to support the World Patriarchal Foundation for Integral Development in its campaign ‘Sawa La Teb’a Beirut’. The campaign aims to repair 200 homes and 17 businesses on Pharaon Street in the Mar Mikhael district, as well as provide financial aid to the families displaced in the area. I thank you, once again, for your generous donations to our Eparchy’s appeals and charitable causes. I also especially thank the many volunteers including our youth and families within the Maronite community who have spent endless hours and effort to make these charitable appeals a success. I join with you in praying for our beloved Lebanon and our Lebanese brothers and sisters that their suffering comes to an end soon. I also ask you to pray for the Maronite Synod of Bishops who will be meeting in the month of October, asking the Lord to inspire the shepherds of the Maronite Church at this challenging and difficult time to guide the church and work for the service of the people of Lebanon.

14.01.2022 Year of Maronite Outreach 3rd Sunday of the Season of the Glorious Cross Dear Brothers and Sisters,... In this week’s Gospel, the Lord reveals to us the pattern of the future. He speaks of the coming of two different types of figures: the false Messiahs, and the true Messiah, the Son of Man who will return at the end of time. And He speaks also of the need to hold to our knowledge and practice of the faith, and never to let these go, although there will be trials and extraordinary events. The Lord is speaking with the apostles, warning them in advance of the hardships they would face at the end of time. The warning was given to the apostles, but it was meant for all Christians: that is why it was written down in the Gospels and has been handed on through the history of the Church. We all need to listen to this, that we are not to believe anyone who says to us, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ Our Lord warns us that false Messiahs and false prophets will appear. They will even do extraordinary things, performing great signs and wonders. So powerful will these signs be that they will deceive, if possible, even those whom the Lord here calls the elect. One can think of very many instances when captivating speakers have arisen, claiming to speak for God, and calling on people to follow them, or to believe them. Often, they have supported their claims to be speaking for God or Our Lady with what they claim to be able to heal, or to cast out demons, or to have special messages for someone. It is right to completely dismiss these claims unless and until they have been approved by the Church, because only then can one be certain that the teaching is in accordance with the Will of God, and that the Church will not be split by new divisions and in-fighting. Friends, when Our Lord discloses the pattern of the future, He is also teaching us the pattern of the right life, that life which is spent seeking sanctification. Let us hold firmly to the faith and to the sacraments. And let us remember, we never need to seek the miraculous: God brings the miraculous to us. The miraculous takes place on the altar at every Mass. Every time we gather around the Eucharist we are gathered around the true God. We do not need false prophets or preachers that tell us that the end is near. The Lord established a Church to discern the true from the false. And the Church teaches, as the Lord said, that those who serve the Lord and who love their neighbour will be saved. Let us not occupy ourselves with dates and times, but let us rather live every day in the presence of God, entrusting ourselves to His will, in the example of the saints and our Holy Mother. We especially seek her intercession and example in this month of October, dedicated by the Church for the Holy Rosary. As Maronites, we have a great love for our blessed Mother and run to her for protection. May she, who teaches us to do as the Lord says, open our eyes to the truth of Her Son and protect us from the lies of all false prophets.

08.01.2022 Year of Maronite Outreach Sunday of the Revelation to St Joseph Dear Brothers and Sisters,... This Sunday we meditate on the Revelation to Joseph which leads us closer to the celebration of the Glorious Birth of our Lord. The great news of the birth of a Saviour was announced to St Joseph when an angel appeared to him, and told him that Mary is to have a Son, whom they shall name Jesus. The name Jesus, in Hebrew, means God saves. Joseph awoke, and immediately did as he was commanded to. In this liturgical season, we know that God is so concerned for us and our salvation that He sent His only begotten Son into the world. We know, too, that he acted through people no one would have expected: a young virgin, two elderly people who were believed to be unable to bear children, and a man whose chosen wife became pregnant before he ever knew her as a husband. The works of God described in the Gospel of this Sunday also had another purpose: the establishment of the Holy Family. This is an important moment in the history of salvation as for us to understand that the journey towards the formation of the Holy Family was not without difficulties and challenges. The person who will bear the greatest responsibility has to be tested the most thoroughly. So too, Our Lady and St Joseph both had to be placed in front of something unthinkable, something no human mind could ever have conceived, and to not only deal with it, but to be the mother and the foster-father of Our Lord Himself; to raise the God-Man in the warmth and security of the Holy Family. In these Gospel readings we find all the elements necessary for a good and harmonious family life. We see the faith of the Holy Family, their willingness to be guided by God. We see the justice of St Joseph, which led him to support Mary despite what anyone else might think or say. And most of all, we see an unconditional love, which is built on the firm foundation of the love of God. This is an unselfish love which seeks for the members of the family what is best for them, not what is most comfortable for ourselves. Each member of the family is individual, and their individuality is a gift from God. We do not always understand this, and we do not always understand those we love. But, as Pope Francis tells us, God is a God of surprises, and as Christians we must be willing to accept surprises when they come from God even in the form of our families. On this Sunday, let us pray that our homes be truly like that of the Holy Family in Nazareth, filled with the faith and the love of the Holy Family and ready to face the challenges of life like them. And this can come only through faith, through sacrifice, through putting the needs of others before our own, through accepting our unique vocation, and the worship of God so that we revere His Will above our own.
