11.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE // The possibility of medical students being drafted into the medical workforce in the COVID-19 response is becoming increasingly real, and Feder...al and State Departments of Health must coordinate with all stakeholders in medical education to harness the students’ talents effectively. Medical students have learnt valuable clinical skills and can contribute to the pandemic workforce in a variety of ways under the right supervision and right conditions. Roles such as helping on telehealth lines, contact tracing, swab sampling, or in a more advanced ‘intern’ function, are all potential ways students can step up, however, it is important to ensure that adequate safeguards, supervision and entitlements are provided for these students. Should medical students be drafted into the workforce, students must have appropriate training in infection control, appropriate provision of personal protective equipment, and should be practising within their scope and with adequate supervision" AMSA President, Daniel Zou, said. You can read our full media release here: https://www.amsa.org.au//coordinated-response-required-med

10.01.2022 This April 5th, we’re marching at home for refugees around the world- The health of refugees and people seeking asylum cannot wait until COVID-19 is managed. We’re all in this together and urge cessation of offshore, prolonged and indefinite detention of refugees and asylum seekers. There are currently over 1000 people held in Australian detention centres. These detention centres do not meet the Government’s recommendations for social distancing, which poses a huge risk to ...health in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak. Not only would there be a rapid spread through the detention centre, causing preventable and inexcusable harm, but workers there would then easily spread COVID-19 through the community outside the centre. As medical students, we are in a privileged position to be the voice for the voiceless seeking basic human right. Join our call to protect the most vulnerable members of our community and act on our ethical duty of care. #DetentionHarmsHealth - AMSA Crossing Borders, Making a Difference (Bond University) Making a Difference- Bond University Global Health Group

01.01.2022 COVID-19 & MEDICAL STUDENT SNAPSHOT As many of you may have observed, the issue of COVID is moving quickly and the landscape has changed immensely within the space of a week. Since providing you with the AMSA Position Statement (see here: https://www.amsa.org.au/amsa-covid-19-response), the conversation has moved away from self-isolation protocols and it is now expected that universities have voiced these protocols to their students. Instead, most recent discussion with stake...holders is primarily focusing on four salient items: 1. Medical education delivery 2. Assessments and Examinations 3. Graduation of final year medical students 4. Recruitment of medical students into the COVID workforce These concerns have been voiced recurrently to MDANZ and AMA Federal Council at a national level. We continue to frequently collaborate and exchange information with MSCs, medical schools, MedSoc Presidents, AMSA volunteers and individual students. Our advocacy has not been limited to solely these four topics and we are still persisting with any concerns you voice to us which may fall outside of these areas. What you can expect from us: - Ongoing meetings with national stakeholders where we raise your advocacy concerns - External updates about the situation to medical students - Extremely frequent information-sharing and collaboration with MSCs and MedSoc Presidents to specifically address more local concerns - An updated AMSA Position Statement on COVID - Regular media releases So where does AMSA currently stand on these 4 items? (see infographics below)
