24.01.2022 Tomorrow at 11am, Remembrance Day. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - the Great War ended 102 years ago. So many lost their lives. Lest we forget. Pictured is Ern Parker who settled in Ryan Road, Padstow in 1924. He was the father of Gordon Parker (a Mayor) and grandfather of Max Parker (a Mayor) and whom the Revesby aquatic centre is named after. Ern was shot several times and had mustard gas inflicted upon him. He was transported home in a hospital ship calle...d "Karoola" and their property was named this. Furthermore, the name for Padstow Park station by 1931 was chosen out of five names - one being Karoola. Ern and his wife Myra tried to run a poultry farm on their 5 acres - but later started a General Store which is now Thai Elephant Restaurant. From there they opened stores in Revesby and Panania. Parkers Shoes at Revesby and Panania is run by Ron Parker - the grandson of Ern Parker. Pictured is Ron's father Gordon Parker in the 1970s outside the shoe store which is still running today.
23.01.2022 Matts' Corner was named from 1920s when the family started a garage and a small general store next to it. This was on the northern corner of The River Road and Uranus Road, Revesby. It operated as a service station until the McQ Smash Repairs business started on the site in the 1980s. Now its at McQ's corner. Only very few still remember Matts' Corner. Please share with a friend and ask them to like main pag.

21.01.2022 A special thank you to Wendy Lindsay MP for East Hills for some very nice words and a review of my recent book in the NSW Parliament. Yesterday she delivered a copy of the speech she had made on 17 June 2020 which was a lovely surprise. Wendy was a Captain of Picnic Point High School the year after I was, and her grandparents were original settlers in Heroes Hill/ Revesby Heights. Wendy has a true local passion for the area. Wendy also referred to Alan Ashton (former Member for East Hills) - who was also a former student of Picnic Point High School and had taught both of us at Picnic Point High School. The full Hansard record can be found here: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pag/HansardResult.aspx

18.01.2022 An article about re-naming Bankstown to rid the influence of Sir Joseph Banks. In which case Revesby too - after Sir Joseph Banks estate and also Sir Joseph Banks High School. Imagine re-naming all three. I wonder if there is an Aboriginal name for Bankstown? https://www.smh.com.au//sure-bankstown-was-named-after-a-m

17.01.2022 Today with local WWII Veterans Cecil Lynne, Peter Werner and Eric Williams, we mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific. They fought throughout the P...acific defending our nation, while on the home front, hundreds of thousands more contributed to essential services to support the war effort. The NSW Government has compiled a digital catalogue of articles and videos of WWII veterans and widows telling their stories to ensure their efforts in the Second World War are not forgotten. These stories can be found here https://www.warmemorialsregister.nsw.gov.au/nsw-stories We remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by the men and women who served. We Will Remember Them Lest We Forget
15.01.2022 A little piece of Ancient Greece @ Picnic Point High School. The author of the books with Alan Ashton who later became the Member for East Hills. At the this time time, Wendy Lindsay MP was in the year below, and a Captain of the school the next year.
12.01.2022 Revesby Workers Club sits on the land once owned by the Cooke Family. It was a poultry farm working right up until the late 1950s. The farm house fronted Tarro Avenue which had once been Polo Street - prior to the East Hills railway line cutting that road in half. The first club house opened in 1962 and its first major re-build was opened by then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1973. Many extensions and improvements later today it has many other amenities on the site.
12.01.2022 Panania Star Theatre - now St Christopher's Church. Have been meaning to mention "The History of Panania, Picnic Point and East Hills" and "The History of Revesby" books are now back in print and available by messaging us, or "Parker's Shoes" - NOTE: PANANIA STORE ONLY for these books. REVESBY only has new Pictorial book.
10.01.2022 The Picnic Point Store (corner Picnic Point Road and Doris Street) as it was then known as in 1997. Some interesting items for sale: Video and Computer accessories; Toys and Games; Hardware. This was the year Telstra was floated, with the phone booth promoting its then newish logo. This is featured in "The History of Panania, Picnic Point and East Hills" recently re-printed and available again.
09.01.2022 Wow. This is a blast from the past....2004.
08.01.2022 This old book shop opposite Padstow station is often forgotten by locals and often not known about my people over the Panania, East Hills, Milperra side of the district. They sometimes get in copies of the local History books. Its been there for 20 years, although before hand there was a Padstow Bazaar Book Exchange a few doors up. They have all kinds of obscure titles and out of print books, and some other bric-a-brac.... They have a great range of school and university text books at the back - much cheaper than buying new. The family also give music lessons and opened a KungFu school around the corner. It's @ 43 Howard Road, Padstow and is a touch of History. 0433 562 746
07.01.2022 Everybody is petitioning the NSW Government about no year 12 formals due to COVID-19 - how many people remember the end of year "Muck Up Day" which has long since been banned? It was banned with good reason as students went too far such as real damage done to school buildings and kids skylarking around with devices and in cars....now they can lose their HSC. I found this picture courtesy of Michelle Coulson on a "Growing Up in the local area" group. It was year 12 muck up day... 1979. Ted Glossop, then Principal of Picnic Point High School was the First Grade Coach of Canterbury-Bankstown that year defeated by StGeorge in the Grand Final. The students made a dummy all dressed in blue and white and hung it outside the auditorium. Ted Glossop remained Principal until early 1984. He passed away in 1998. However, locally I remember numerous pranks such as shaving cream over teachers cars; teachers cars wrapped up in rolls and rolls of toilet paper; class rooms being painted obscene bright red and Tom Thumb firecrackers thrown in the playground. Can anybody remember their own "Muck Up Day" pranks at Sir Joseph Banks; East Hills Boys + Girls; Picnic Point; De La Salle or Mt St Joseph??
07.01.2022 Andrew Molloy is a great historian from our local area and I was happy to speak about the latest edition of his History of Padstow Revesby Panania Picnic Point ...East Hills Milperra books in Parliament of NSW. If you are looking for a #TrueLocal gift for Fathers Day this weekend, head into Parkers Shoes & Handbags to buy a copy. Also, Happy Belated Birthday - Andrew! See more
07.01.2022 A Free pdf Download is available, featuring 2 pages from "A Pictorial History of East Hills" - it includes the Zig Zag trenches in the local schools and the day Japan surrendered - 75 years ago today!!! http://andrewmolloy.com/extract.pdf the day that Japan surrendered in World War 2 the [ Revesby] school bell was rung continuously, under the direction of the Headmaster Mr. Hubbard. The continuous ringing of the bell caused Reverend Harper, the Congregational Minister, to c...ome running as the prolonged ringing was interpreted as a disaster. On being informed by Mr. Hubbard that the War was over he hastened back to his Church and returned with his portable organ and all the classes assembled in the playground where a thanksgiving service was held with much singing. After this service, Mr. Hubbard addressed the assembled school and declared no more school for the day and advised us to go home and prepare bonfires to be lit that night as part of the celebrations. I can remember the numerous bonfires that lit the sky that night. This signalled the finish of current blackout restrictions." by Bill Schuberg recalled (Revesby Public School 1996 page 55) http://andrewmolloy.com/extract.pdf
06.01.2022 Dynamite @ Picnic Point. When the Tempe-East Hills railway line was being built, gelignite was used to make some of the cuttings, like the one through Padstow station. At least twice lots were stolen and found hidden in the caves at Picnic Point. This article from the "Daily Telegraph" 9 May 1931. Other articles suspect it was stolen to be later used to blow open bank safes.... Lucky there is no dynamite hidden around Picnic Point these days !!!
06.01.2022 Everything old is new again - all those years after the RTA behind the BEHHA Op Shop in Revesby Place. Locals wills soon have a much easier RMS.

04.01.2022 Two pop-up Book Stalls and signings today. One at Panania Parkers, where the Member for East Hills Wendy Lindsay called by. Wendy and Andrew were School Captains of Picnic Point High School in consecutive years. The other book stall at Revesby Parkers, with Ron Parker. It was fitting that Halloween is also known as All Souls (Soles) Day. Parkers Shoes have sold the books since 2004.
04.01.2022 Writing your own Family Stories - some ideas I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day and they commented how they really enjoy reading everybody's comments and own memories. Its a reminder that everybody and every family has their own story within the local area intertwined with their own family history. One photo of a place may be a reminder or an insight into an important event in their parents or grandparents lives. It is a reminder the history book is merely a sta...Continue reading

03.01.2022 A prominent corner in the East Hills district...the north corner of Doyle Road and The River Road, Revesby. The first "McDonald's" in Revesby 1920s - albeit a general store......This was later a Dine-in Pizza Hut by the 1970s. It later became Olsen's Funeral Home. 02.01.2022 Villiers Road ran from Salt Pan Creek in the east to Little Salt Pan Creek in the west, but when Henry Lawson Drive and Alfords Point Road went in was cut into Banjo Patterson Close and Henry Kendall Avenue. This view is from the top of Henry Kendall Avenue into the descent to Little Salt Pan Creek - and its a reminder how East Hills got its name - the Sun Shining on the distant Hills. The epicentre is a actually a golden smile as the sun sinks behind those distant hills. The units in Centaur Street and Neptune Park are at right.
