24.01.2022 There is growing support for a campaign to save the Vietnamese Bilingual program at Footscray Primary School. There were many contributing factors in the program being axed, the argument at the centre of the campaign is that none of these should be insurmountable if the will is there.
24.01.2022 Just completed this mural in solidarity with the Djab Wurrung people and the campaign to stop the Victorian Government cutting down more sacred trees in order t...o construct a highway. Was good to make use of the dark grey colour already on the wall in the suburb of Kensington, Melbourne and turn it into a road. #DjabWurrungTrees #DjabWurrung
19.01.2022 You know what's great about the jobs that have been advertised at Maribyrnong City Council? They are well paid, have good entitlements, and are mostly permanent. The public and community sector sets the standard for wages and conditions. Good wages are the number 1 determinant of standard of living. Great to see a permanent part time role in there too. Elected councilors have a high-level governance role. The operations of council day-to-day depend on the work of a large numb...er of highly skilled professionals. The councilors likely to have the biggest impacts are the ones that know this and are ready to work with and around it. Being a councilor isn't about hands-on implementation, it's about community leadership, building support for big ideas and big change, and being able to stand up to the more conservative elements in the bureaucracy. https://www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/About-us/Careers

13.01.2022 This really sucks. We lost the Reverence. We lost the Dog. And now the Night Heron.
08.01.2022 Solidarity with the Djab Wurrung people who have fought hard for many many months to defend their sacred birthing trees. Shame on the State government, VicRoads... and VicPol for felling the majestic and hugely culturally significant Directions Tree yesterday, for arresting cultural defenders, and for threatening at this very moment to cut down the Grandmother and Grandfather trees. It's not just Rio Tinto who commit acts of cultural genocide in 2020. It's the "progressive" Vic State Labor government who destroy sacred sites as well. Register your disgust with the government by calling the Premier's office on 03 9651 5000. #NoTreesNoTreaty Please note: If you are heading to camp or Ararat, people are gathering in the Alexandra Gardens Park Girdlestone St, Ararat. Food is being prepared and plans discussed. If you can't get to the camp head to the park now or if you are unable to get there, call Daniel Andrews over and over again. #DjabWurrungTrees #DjabWurrung
07.01.2022 Maribyrnong residents! Fellow lefties Westside! Make sure you return your completed council ballot by 6pm this Friday October 23. Don't just avoid a fine, relish the opportunity to vote for people like myself who have spent the last few decades building social movements - for climate justice, refugee rights, against the far right and racist policing, for LGBTIQ+ equality and many others - and of course, organising in our workplaces and standing in solidarity with workers wh...o strike for their rights. A socialist on council would challenge the whole terrain of council discussion & debate- instead of the myopic focus on handouts to business and facilitating developers interests, we would fight to put the needs and interests of working class residents, the majority of us, front and centre and champion collective resistance to win social change.
07.01.2022 Another piece in the genre of personal reflections by climate scientists struggling with the knowledge of what we're doing to the planet. Many climate scientists have shied away from being outspoken or activist, for various reasons - Sophie and Ketan explain the pressures , professional and personal, that contribute to this. https://www.abc.net.au//how-do-we-raise-kids-to-d/12762090
07.01.2022 I want to give a huge thank-you to all the Victorian Socialists volunteers who helped out with the Stony Creek campaign. The Stony Creek results have been declared with Cuc Lam and Bernadette Thomas successful. Congratulations! 8% of the vote is a solid result, and sets us up to continue building a base for socialist politics out here in the West. It shows that there is an audience for radical action on climate change, for standing up for the rights of working people. ... We were up against a tough field of candidates, some with deep roots, others with deep pockets, many of whom managed to convince the electorate they were more progressive than they actually are (even managing to fool some of the voters who put Victorian Socialists first). We fought an uphill battle to politicize the contest and to expose unprincipled shady deals by so called 'independent' candidates. It's unfortunate that similar deals have had an impact elsewhere in Maribyrnong, at least in Stony Creek they didn't pay off. Another big thanks to everyone who followed our how-to-vote card which was based on an informed assessment of the other candidates: in the end my preferences gave a strong boost to Bernadette from the Greens and helped to keep business-association backed candidates out of office. Victorian Socialists isn't going away and neither am I. If Jorge is successful in the recount tomorrow then you'll be seeing a lot more of Jorge, Liz, myself and the whole VS team out west!
04.01.2022 Just over 2 hours left to get in your vote. Don't forget to post your ballot before 6pm tonight! Make sure you register your support for workers' rights in Maribyrnong; for radical action on the climate emergency; for carving out more parkland and more support for the arts and your opposition to privatisation of council services. These are just some of the important issues I've campaigned around this election. None of them will be solved by getting a socialist councillor elected, but it sure will help to have an activist on council willing to use their platform to push for and organise collective action around winning these things.
04.01.2022 Update: There's a recount in Yarraville! Fingers crossed for Jorge. Will be amazing to have a socialist on council!
01.01.2022 The latest of many pieces of writing by climate scientist who feel despair at the irreversible destruction we are witnessing. Do your research, and don't vote for candidates who think climate change is 'not settled' or that it's 'too expensive' to take action. We can't afford not to. Climate change is going to hurt the most vulnerable in our society first, but ultimately it's coming for all of us.... https://www.theguardian.com//the-great-unravelling-i-never
