19.01.2022 Assaying (Part 2) since the 1600's assaying and hallmarking became more and more commonplace. by the 1700's, Britain's wealth meant that new hallmarks and taxes were introduced to the production of precious metals, in order to cope with increased demand. This eventually started causing problems - finished jewellery was often damaged when stamped with a mark to indicate the tax had been paid and reimbursed. During the 1800's, new marks were introduced to denote different puri...ties of gold. Assaying became increasingly difficult, as many less scrupulous goldsmiths would make fake hallmarks in order to avoid the cost of assaying, or get away with using sub-par metals. Assaying also took on a new role during the second world war - restrictions on the use of metal mean that most jewellery from this period could only be made in 9ct, particularly wedding rings. Even in the midst of war, and after being bombed out of their previous establishment, the Guild of Goldsmiths continued to assay and mark British jewellery. be sure to head to the Guild's website for more detail on the history of assaying in Britain!

17.01.2022 Continuing our Posts about the Guild of Goldsmiths, did you know that the full title of the guild is "The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths"? The Guild of Goldsmiths is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of London, and governs not just the goldsmiths, but also the silversmiths and jewellers of Britain. The companies are referred to as "Livery" companies, as in the 12th - 14th centuries, when these companies were established, each company had a uniform, or "Livery" that was worn to signify membership.

07.01.2022 Assaying (Part 1) The science of testing precious metals for purity, in order to prevent fraudulent goldsmiths and fake jewellery. The Guild of Goldsmiths in London has been responsible for assaying the precious metals used in Britain since the early 1200's. However, the first Hallmarks (stamps used to indicate a piece has been assayed) were only put into use in the 1360's; The first stamp being the leopard's head, used to denote sterling silver. During the reign of King Henry VIII, assaying became more standardised, with extra marks brought in to denote the assayer and the location the piece was made. It is in this era that special weights are brought in, used specifically for measuring gold and silver. It is also thought that this is when the term "hallmark" first appeared.
