25.01.2022 The modest, additional protections for machines being introduced at the Dee Why RSL must be rolled out right across Australia. We can’t have one level of protections for certain Australians, and lesser protections for everyone else. It’s a bit like saying some cars need to have seatbelts and brakes, but others don’t deserve them.
25.01.2022 Hope to see you there!
25.01.2022 The Federal Government's EPBC amendment is environmental vandalism in the extreme. A chilling demonstration of the Government's disregard for democracy, and a breathtaking insight into their contempt for the environment and fascination with making money at any cost.
24.01.2022 Just as seatbelts and drink driving laws made cars safer, we need measures to make poker machines safer. The tragic fact is that about 80 per cent of people addicted to gambling are addicted to poker machines, and this results in at least 400 suicides in Australia each year.
23.01.2022 Tasmania’s health system is fundamentally broken. People are dying, elective surgery wait times have blown out and mental health is significantly underfunded. It is well beyond time to bring in the Productivity Commission, as an honest broker, to investigate why Tasmania’s health system is the worst performing in the country. https://andrewwilkie.org/federal-government-must-step-in-a/
23.01.2022 Local media matters and the decline of local media should concern us all. Media is not just a business, it is also a vital community service and we must regulate and fund it accordingly.
23.01.2022 The Federal Government’s own end-of-voyage report showed 1000 sheep aboard the Al Kuwait were exposed to the highest level of heat stress. Shame on the Government and Opposition for continuing to support this vile trade.
22.01.2022 Amanda Ducker - Journalist writes about Julian Assange and me in the Saturday Mercury. (Sorry about the paywall)
22.01.2022 Just as seatbelts and drink-driving laws made cars safer, we need measures to make poker machines safer. If governments continue to insist on profiting from poker machines, they are obligated to do something about the terrible cost to the community and venues must be held to account for the human misery they cause. https://andrewwilkie.org/how-low-can-the-pokies-industry-g/
21.01.2022 Just met with UK High Commissioner regarding Julian Assange’s possible extradition to the United States, with Parliamentary Julian Assange Group Co-Chair George Christensen. The High Commissioner gave us a good hearing and assured us she will report the exchange and our serious concerns back to London.
20.01.2022 The Prime Minister must commit to the bold reforms needed to ensure a fair go for older Australians. Watch here: https://andrewwilkie.org/question-to-the-prime-minister-bo/
20.01.2022 If Mr Assange is extradited from the UK to the US, and the Australian Government does not try to stop it, the precedent will have been set that if any Australian offends the government of another country - particularly if that Australian is a journalist - the Australian Government will roll over and allow it.
18.01.2022 What’s with all the state secrets? I’m the first to say the State Government has done a good job keeping us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. But I’m growing increasingly uneasy about the secrecy and defensiveness of those in charge, especially now when the government has enormous power and a heavy hand on our daily lives and freedoms.
17.01.2022 This year’s Federal Budget will be one of the most important in our history. So it must be bold and fair, bold in that we need to restore the economy, and fair in that it must address the dreadful disadvantage in our community.
17.01.2022 Julian Assange's treatment is wrong on so many levels, not least because all he really did was publicise hard evidence of US war crimes. Shame on the US, UK and Australian governments .
16.01.2022 Australia Post must lift its game. Too much mail is taking too long to deliver and this risks spoiling Christmas for many people.
10.01.2022 Frankly it’s not in China’s best interests to start an armed conflict with the US anytime soon. The retaliation would be overwhelming. In any case the evidence is clear that Australia needs a more independent foreign and security policy, because no good would come from us picking sides in a barney like this one.
10.01.2022 Despite the devastation we have seen in aged care homes around the country, there has been not a single unannounced safety check at Tasmanian aged care homes during COVID-19. This is unacceptable and wilfully and dangerously ignorant of the Federal Government. https://andrewwilkie.org/17377-2
08.01.2022 Glad the Premier's realised not everyone has a computer or the skills to use one.
07.01.2022 The Wilkie Report August 2020 Well here we are, almost six months into the pandemic and it’s dangerously negligent that the Federal Government still hasn’t got a virtual parliament up and running. For months the advice has been clear, to use technology to work from home when you can. But when it comes to running the country, it’s do as I say, and not as I do.
05.01.2022 The Australian Government’s cruel and illegal treatment of asylum seekers and refugees must end now. Support the Time for a Home campaign to end indefinite detention and give people a place to call home. Full speech: https://andrewwilkie.org/andrew-speaks-in-parliament-about/
05.01.2022 As if small businesses are not doing it tough already, there is a growing trend of insurance companies refusing to provide cover to small businesses, or charging sky-high prices for protection. Without adequate insurance a number of companies may be forced to close permanently.
04.01.2022 The State Government must come clean and tell us what happened to these hundreds of dogs. Were they all sentenced to death just so the Government could collect some gambling taxes?
02.01.2022 The Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Bill continues the practice of treating asylum seekers as criminals and detention centres as jails. It must be dropped.
02.01.2022 Tas Office of Racing Integrity has just released figures that show 1412 greyhounds were euthanised in the past 5 years. That's almost 1 dog a day killed just because it did not run fast enough.
01.01.2022 The Government's latest asylum seeker bill is an abomination. More deterrence and punishment when integrity and lawfulness is what's actually called for. Watch my full speech here: https://andrewwilkie.org/andrew-speaks-in-parliament-on-th/
01.01.2022 Did the State Government follow proper process awarding these taxpayer funds and give other organisations a chance including TAFE provider Drysdale Institute, or did it simply agree to hand over the taxpayer funds after a party donor came knocking?
