25.01.2022 Preston High School students and Principal Sean Butler talking about the focus on mental health wellbeing as students prepare for on-site learning next week. As featured in The Age yesterday...

25.01.2022 Did you know there was a record number of women elected in this year's Local Council elections? With results in, 272 women will take their place on councils for this term representing 43.8 per cent of councillors, a new high for both Victoria and the nation. And whilst it's good to report Victoria is heading towards the 50% target set by our State Government's gender equality strategy - 'Safe and Strong' -... Here in Darebin, we have already SURPASSED the 50% - with 5 out of 9 of our recently elected councillors, women. It's good to know we're leading the way in pursuit of gender equality and closely representing our community to make it and our state stronger. Darebin City Council

25.01.2022 It’s so good to see ‘0’ lives lost in the latest numbers. The 14 day average is now 11.6 and we have a low of 9 new cases.

24.01.2022 HERE'S SOME GREAT NEWS FOR THOSE WITH INSECURE WORK... We're providing a Secure Work Pilot Scheme with up to five days of sick or carer's pay for casual and insecure workers in industries where it's needed most and creating a safety net for those without one. We'll be consulting with industry, workers and unions over the next few months to get this right. But we expect the two-year pilot will cover workers in occupations with high levels of insecurity such as cleaners, ...hospitality staff, supermarket workers and aged care staff. Once up and running, it will afford these workers sick pay when they’re unwell, and carer’s pay when they need to take time to look after someone they love. Importantly, it will mean Victorians aren’t being forced to choose between the safety of their co-workers and putting food on the table for their family.

23.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS.... GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS!!! AND MAJOR CHANGES TO MASK WEARING ALSO!!! We can confirm you’ll be able to host up to 30 people in your home for Christmas Day. Babies under 12 months won’t count towards the cap.... This change will come into effect from 11.59pm, 13 December, just in time for catch-ups, and Christmas barbies and for our Jewish communities, the closing days of Hanukkah. We’re also able to confirm some more immediate changes: From 11:59pm tonight, the number of visitors to your home will increase from two to 15 per day. That can be split across different times ten for lunch, and five for dinner as long as people are sticking to a total of 15. Outdoor gatherings in a public place the park, the beach will increase to 50. For those couples who’ve had to delay their special day, weddings will increase to 150 people. The same number will apply to funerals and religious ceremonies indoors. There’ll be changes for our hospitality sector too. For smaller venues, the density limit will change to one person for every two square metres up to 50 customers. QR code record keeping will be mandatory. For bigger venues, the density limit will stay the same, but the cap will increase to 150. Total venue capacity will also rise to 300. Cinemas, galleries and museums will also be able to host up to 150 people indoors. And in good news for community clubs, contact and non-contact sports can begin for adults as well as kids 150 people indoors with a group size of up to 20 and 500 outdoors with groups of up to 50. Organisers will also be able to apply to host a public event. Different requirements and rules will need to apply, depending on whether it’s a school fete or a major sporting match. We’re also able to begin a phased approach for staff heading back to the office. From 30 November, up to 25 per cent of workers will be able to attend onsite. But to be clear unless you’re one of those people nominated by your employer you need to keep working from home. We're also making some changes to the rules around masks. In short, you’ll still need to wear one when you’re indoors and on public transport and where you can’t keep your distance. But if you’re outdoors and you can keep a safe distance, masks will no longer be mandatory. For example, you’ll still need to keep your mask on if you’re at a busy outdoor market or in line for a snag at your local Bunnings. If you’re headed for a quiet stroll around the neighbourhood, you won’t need to wear a mask but you will need to carry one, in case the situation changes. Remember, masks are a small sacrifice that help keep all of us safe, and having achieved the amazing outcome we have now - we don't want to go backwards.

23.01.2022 I hope everyone turned their clocks forward ! Here are the latest numbers. Our rolling average keeps falling which is great news. Still one life was lost - which is one life too many.

22.01.2022 Young women are leaders within our communities challenging the status quo and at the forefront of movements for change despite the barriers and gender stereotypes that try to hold them back. This International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the power of girls and young women. We insist on their right to be safe, educated and healthy and we empower our girls to believe they can achieve anything they set their mind to. Victoria is proud to be leading the nation on gender ...equality. And Preston and Reservoir are playing a major part. We are unashamed in our efforts to promote women, and committed to lifting girls up. Girls’ voices must be included in every room where decisions are made. By investing in girls today, we create a fairer, safer and more equal tomorrow.

21.01.2022 The winners of the Victorian Early Years Awards were announced last night - recognising the outstanding people and programs that support and nurture our youngest Victorians. There were 8 winners across 7 categories, and it was good to see a local Preston based organisation Body Safety Australia (BSA) - as the recipient of the ‘Promoting Children’s Health and Wellbeing’ award. Launched in 2015, BSA takes a whole-community approach to child abuse prevention, working with ch...ildren, parents and educators to ensure the collective understanding and implementation of body safety for children. They have improved outcomes for many children and families by enhancing their ability to recognise and respond to inappropriate situations. I would like to thank Body Safety Australia for the important work they’ve done, in helping some of the most vulnerable children and families across Victoria, and I congratulate them on winning this award. For more information, visit the Victorian Early Years Awards website: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/veya

21.01.2022 Great news - Kinder in 2021 will be FREE!! We will deliver over $169 million to make kinder free next year, saving families around $2,000 for every child enrolled in a participating funded kinder program. Families with kids at long day care centres will also benefit from a saving of around $2000 in fees. ... And there will even be reduced fees for unfunded three-year old kinder programs. To further help parents return to work, we will invest $81 million to increase the availability of before and after school care. All of this will give parents - especially mums - greater flexibility when it comes to work, study, training or re-entering the workforce.

20.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Our Government is committed to progressing gender equality and ending violence against women. During this year’s 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, we are asking Victorians to talk about what respect and equality looks like at home, in relationships, in families, in workplaces and in publ...ic. We all have a role to play in calling out disrespect when we see it. Together, we can create a Victoria free from violence.

18.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, but it will be observed differently this year... The traditional one minute silence will still be observed at 11 am today, however: The Shrine of Remembrance will be closed, but you can watch the Shrine of Remembrance’s virtual presentation on their Facebook page or YouTube channel from 10.45am. Register your attendance at https://www.shrine.org.au/remembrance-day-2020... You can buy and dedicate a virtual poppy as part of the RSL’s Poppy Appeal and get kids to create a messenger dove or pay tribute on social media using #remembranceday20 #victoriaremembers or #redtoremember. In line with current restrictions, a maximum of 10 people can gather outdoors and at venues such as our local Preston War Memorial (as below) and local cenotaphs. You can mark the occasion at homes with two people and their dependents as long as they have not had any other visitors that day. RSL venues that serve food and drinks, under the guidelines, can have 40 patrons per venue indoors and up to 70 outdoors, with group caps of 10. Some of Victoria’s most iconic buildings will be lit up in red to mark Remembrance Day. I encourage everyone to commemorate the occasion and honour veterans safely as we continue our steady steps out of restrictions. For more information about Remembrance Day and 75th Anniversary of WWII activities and exhibitions, visit: vic.gov.au/world-war-2-75th-anniversary.

16.01.2022 Take a look at the state-of-the-art Bell and Preston station designs... The dangerous level crossings will go. Traffic will run smoother. New open space will be provided underneath the rail bridge. A shared walking and cyling path will connect everyone to the stations and open space. And, the new Bell and Preston stations will be safer and more accessible - with comfortable upgraded facilities for the 4,000 plus people that use them each weekday.... I can't wait for these important projects to be delivered to our area!

15.01.2022 SOME MORE EXCITING LOCAL SCHOOL NEWS!! The Victorian Government is providing $1.856 million to plan for an upgrade at Reservoir Primary School which will include adding facilities for an additional 150 enrolments. This injection of funding, which is part of the Infrastructure Planning and Acceleration Fund, will help Reservoir Primary further promote the very best educational opportunities for all students.... I look forward to meeting with the school community when it’s safe to do so to see their design developments so that their projects will be shovel-ready once capital funding is allocated in a future State Budget.

14.01.2022 This was spotted out the front of a house in Preston recently. What a great idea to keep in mind when you’re culling your herbs, fruit, veggies and plants - there’s nothing better than sharing your excess with your neighbours. Have a great weekend everyone! Northside Hub

12.01.2022 BREAKING There are now zero active cases of coronavirus in Victoria. And for 25 days in a row, we have had zero new cases and zero deaths. A big Thank You to our community for getting us here and helping steer 2020 Christmas towards being safe, healthy and joyous!

11.01.2022 It's been a tough year for our students - and we're doing everything we can to keep them on track and make sure no-one is left behind. So we're bringing in more than 4,100 tutors made up of teachers who are retired, on leave, pre-service or casual across Victorian schools to help the students who need it. The $250 million package is the single biggest boost individual learning support in Victoria’s history, and will make sure any student who may have fallen behind or become d...isengaged gets the help they deserve. The package will support more than 200,000 students across the state. Our teachers have done a remarkable job this year and with the additional support of onsite tutors, these teaching teams can ensure that students have dedicated and individualised support throughout 2021. Schools will determine how tutoring support is best implemented in their school. The tutors will provide targeted teaching to students, with a focus on literacy and numeracy as these are the foundational skills. To register interest in being a tutor visit www.education.vic.gov.au

09.01.2022 To mask or not to mask at Bunnings

08.01.2022 School is back this week- but will continue as on-line learning for now. All Primary School students, VCE, VCAL and Specialist Schools will return to on-site learning next week from 12 October. And BREAKING NEWS! Year 7 students will also resume on-site learning from October 12. Students in Years 8 to 10 will resume from October 26. ... I don’t need to tell you how difficult it’s been for a lot of teachers, staff, parents and students over recent months so it’s nice to share good news regarding the major investments our Victorian Government will be delivering to some of the schools in our area. The first one is Newlands Primary School which will be receiving $860,000 to plan for future works! The State Government is investing $42 million into planning for school infrastructure projects to fast-track the state’s long-term economic recovery hit by the coronavirus pandemic. And Newlands is one of 33 further schools given the green light to start planning for upgrades and new builds under the Infrastructure Planning and Acceleration Fund. The Victorian School Building Authority will work with school communities and provide principals and school leaders with ‘Bricks & Mortar’ training, which covers the process schools should follow to successfully manage their project. Developing detailed designs now will mean these projects will be shovel-ready once capital funding is allocated in a future State Budget. I’m proud to be a part of a Government that is supporting schools in our area to help their students achieve their best results by planning for a future upgrade for their school community. Look out for some more good news over the coming days.

08.01.2022 We all find joy in different ways. It might be music, gardening, painting spoons, walking the dog - or in my case - spending time with my son. Sometimes though, no matter what we do - it can be hard to feel okay. And that's why there are many different places available to offer extra support when and if we need it.... It's important to look after our mental health at any time - but during the coronavirus pandemic - it's essential. See here for more information and lists of places that can help: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/mental-health-resources-coronav And please - take care.

06.01.2022 Remember Jemima of Preston who missed out on her Learner Permit test because of the pandemic? It turns out her test was rescheduled - only to be cancelled again when the second wave hit. Well, it looks like third time lucky for Jemima - as from early next year, on-line early testing will become available to make things easier and quicker. ... And to reward her patience - and others who’ve been similarly inconvenienced - we’ll fast-track the test appointments and even waive booking fees until April 2021. Hopefully that makes up for some of that painful waiting! Also, for anyone waiting for Driver licence testing - this will resume under Step Three, with 12 new pop-up licence testing sites and 380 new licence testing officers. All this should speed up some of the processes to get as many people through as quickly as possible. Yes, it’s been difficult and frustrating for everyone concerned. But hopefully we’ll get you on the road safely....and soon. Thanks again for your patience.

06.01.2022 2 weeks in a row of double zero figures What a fantastic outcomeWell done everyone!
