25.01.2022 HOW MUCH??? I sometimes have prospective clients splutter in shock at the project fee I quote for them. And look, it's not the client's fault. They start by thinking "I just need a few words for the thing" - this especially seems to be the case for product packaging copy.... The truth is it's never just about the teeny number of words you need for "the thing". Honestly, that part is usually easy. But it's everything that happens before the writing - the research into your competitors, your target customers, the channel where you are selling, your brand personality, etc, etc - that makes the coming up with the words bit flow. And that process takes time. Time that costs money. That's why I have a minimum project fee for even the smallest of projects. Because I'd rather do it right and spend the time that's required to come up with the right words for you. Not just the right number of words. If you want to chat about the words for your thing, I'm currently taking bookings for August onwards.
25.01.2022 Sorrynotsorry to be a total cliche, but what a year, amiright? . I sat down recently to look at what this past year has held and it's been, without a doubt, my biggest business year ever. That's not something I take for granted in a year when many have suffered so greatly. . Looking at the numbers, this year has seen me:... - work with 35+ businesses - subcontract for 5 clever and inspiring copywriters - subcontract to 4 awesome copywriters who've allowed me to grow my business - worked with 10 recurring or returning clients - thank you for your ongoing support - written copy for 10+ website jobs, more blogs than I could face counting, 7 award entries and a bunch of other bits and bobs like brochures, email campaigns, general editing jobs and on it goes . Financially, I've had my first-ever year invoicing six figures - MIND WELL AND TRULY BLOWN. Not bad for a mum trying to work around school hours, not to mention a couple of months of homeschooling thrown in there for good measure. . All that work means that it's now time for a break. I'm closing the laptop at 2pm on Wednesday 16 December and going to watch my biggest chick walk out of primary school for the last time. I'll be back on limited hours from mid-Jan, only working with existing clients for that month. . Looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings and can't wait to help more businesses. Contributing to your success is what gets me out of bed in the morning. . 24.01.2022 Sorry not sorry for the swears. But had to share this. I love a good headline. Hell, I make a living writing them. But some issues need more than a snappy sentence to sum it up. That means reading the article! (And bonus points for using critical thinking to see if there's a particular bias to the article and if anything has been omitted. Especially important when opinion sits next to factual writing and satire can look more real than "real news".) Would love to hear your thoughts on this and the general state of news media.
24.01.2022 One of my most fun projects of this year has been copy for Blankids. Custom blankets for kids printed right here in Australia! Support an awesome Brisbane-based company. #imablankid
21.01.2022 "Hey Ange, would you like a drink?" "Yes, please! I'll have a gin!" I'm a bit of a fan of gin (ok, and wine, and beer, and champagne, and...)... So when a member of a business group I'm in (Digital Masterchefs with Kate Toon (Members area) - you should check it out if you want to learn more about all the marketing things for your business) announced that she's launched a new tailored gin recommendation business, I was pretty damn excited. I've just got to drink down my current stash a touch before making an order. Shouldn't be too much of a hardship! https://www.theginporium.com/
21.01.2022 Are you a Northern Beaches business like me? Want to work with more locals? Then jump on board this new local directory from my very clever web developer.
19.01.2022 A little intro to my business and how I can help you
18.01.2022 Video. Yep, you know that it's one of the most powerful ways to promote your business. But maybe you're a bit scared? Well, my mates at Itchy Feet Video are doing one of their "Shoot Me Now" days at their studio in Brookvale. It's a great, easy way to get a professional video for your website and social media. I'm booking in! Maybe see you there? https://www.itchyfeetdigital.com/shoot-me-now/

17.01.2022 Spot of light nepotism, promoting my sister's new business Green Room Girl which will be at That Great Market in Lindfield this Sunday. How great do these plants and baskets look?
17.01.2022 For one of my clients, I'm writing a lot about different foods and food cultures - particularly Asian foods. This article is a great reminder to check myself and the perspective I'm writing from.
15.01.2022 How good is a thesaurus? Fun fact, my boyfriend (now husband) gave me a thesaurus for my first Christmas present from him. Inscription: "To the girl who says nice too much, love the boy who says cool too much." We're probably both still guilty nearly 20 years on. This week, I've struggling to strike the right tone for a client project, so thesaurus love has reached new heights. I've been using Word Hippo, one of my very favourite online tools, to help find the perfect words... to nail a tricky brief. Have I nailed it? Time will tell... Do you have a favourite tool in your kit bag? [Image description: A picture of Niki Segnit's ground-breaking The Flavour Thesaurus. 15.01.2022 Celebrating the end of a big week with a spot of reading time. Yes, I read cookbooks for fun. #sydneycopywriter #foodandbeveragecopywriter #foodcopywriting #foodcopywriter #tccscopybeast #digitalmasterchef
14.01.2022 Oooooooo, who's got new photos? This gal! For those who don't already know me, hi, I'm Angela, but I usually only get called that by my PT when I'm trying to cheat at an exercise. Most of the time it's Ange. I'm a Sydney-based copywriter who is a sucker for birds on clothing and homewares. ... I like writing for food businesses (especially hospitality and food service businesses). I spent my late teens and early 20s doing bar work, so I have a real soft spot for hospo. Plus I'm a food obsessive. (Ask me about my cook book collection!). I also love writing for B2B businesses, especially in the services space. While some people might find this space boring, I thrive on the challenge of helping businesses who mean what they say to say what they mean. Taking the 'what the?' factor away and making the message clear. When I'm not at my desk, I'm running a low-cost taxi service for my two daughters. : @thelifestylesocialco #sydneycopywriter #b2bcopywriter #foodcopywriter #mumstaxi
11.01.2022 OUT OF THE OFFICE. Heading to Mudgee to drink some wine and eat all the foods.
11.01.2022 A Sunday cook up is a regular part of our survival plan. That's been especially true in recent months when everyone was home and needing feeding 24/7. This week a lamb roast, ratatouille and other veg in the wood oven will provide a head start for school holidays survival and juggling act. Organisation and delicious? It's a win all round.
10.01.2022 Today is my 10th wedding anniversary. We had a 9 year "try before you buy" period, too. But I knew very early, at just 22 years old, that this was the real deal. And one of the reasons was that Jon recommended a book to me on one of our early dates. Captain Corelli's Mandolin. So it made sense to have a reading from that book on our wedding day. "Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have... to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two." We've recommended many books to each other since then. And I look forward to many more. Happy 10th wedding anniversary Jon. I'm so happy that you've entangled your roots with mine
09.01.2022 Werking, werking, werking while kids are playing, playing, playing. Looking forward to school routine returning next week and if this year has given me anything, it's a gratitude for the normality of school and the structure it gives our life. #sydneycopywriter #jugglingnotstruggling
07.01.2022 CONNECTING. Great morning grabbing coffee with other members of @clevercopywritingschool #tccscopybeast #sydneycopywriter #berkelobakery
06.01.2022 This morning I did a call with another copywriter, chatting about how my business has grown around my kids. One of the questions she had was about marketing and what's worked well for me. And as a somewhat introverted and inconsistent (look, I was trying to find a nice word instead of *lazy*) marketer, I said that my business is built on relationships. The former colleagues who continue to support me, refer work to me and occasionally sing back up for me at karaoke (whoops, I... meant collaborate on projects with me!). The connections I made in freelancing groups who've become real friends. The former clients who tell their mum and brother about me (true story - I'm like the family copywriter now). I'm not the most socially outgoing person, and when I started my business I feared that would work against me. But what I am is interested in people and a great encourager of others, and I think that's been rewarded. So yeah, I'm a big fan of word of mouth marketing and am ever so grateful for everyone who's ever suggested me to a client. #copywriting #smallbusinessmarketing #wordofmouthmarketing
05.01.2022 TGIFriday... Loving this @purplehandswines Grenache with big thanks to @angelapickettcopywriter for letting me know about @artisans_of_barossa Every wine from my order a few months ago has been a winner. I think it's time for another case!
05.01.2022 The cobbler's child has shoes! I wrote a blog post. For my own business... The very first blog post I wrote for my own website (six years ago?! How can that be?) was "Five business lessons I learnt from Frozen". While in some ways, I feel like I’ve matured a lot as a copywriter and business owner, there’s still plenty that leaves me feeling like Olaf in Frozen 2: This will all make sense when I am older. Yes, the one guaranteed thing about being in business is that there’s ...always more to learn and there are new lessons all the time. So, with the spirit of learning in mind, let’s take a look at some of the lessons I took from Frozen 2. https://angeladenly.com.au/business-lessons-from-frozen-2/
05.01.2022 I'm not one of those "can only write in silence" writers. Years of working in busy, buzzy PR agencies beat that out of me. (Although there were always quiet spaces for those days when only silence will do.) And I'm really thankful for that now that thanks to COVID-19, I'm sharing an office with my husband who is on calls all.day.long... Anyway, all that is to say, my current writing soundtrack is showing my age with its heavy loading of late 90s, early 00s tunes. Get it in your earholes and remember the days when you donned your Blundstone boots and flannelette shirt to rock out at so many pubs and RSLs across Sydney before live music started dying its slow and painful death :(
04.01.2022 Flannel flowers, cracking views and banksia men on the Spit to Manly walk. Sydney, you put on a show today!
04.01.2022 My love for Adam Liaw continues... Laying down the truth about the daily chore of cooking and that it's ok not to love it all the time. That's why I have no shame that as well as plenty of great quality food that I've bought to cook, my freezer is also frequently stocked with meals from places like The Dinner Ladies and the takeaway apps on my phone are well-used. Because some days it's just too damn hard.
03.01.2022 Clever followers, I'm on the hunt for Christmas gift ideas for my loved ones this year. Keen to support small business, preferably local to the Northern Beaches but I'm open to anywhere in Australia, really. People to buy for include: A not-girly 12 year old daughter A more-girly 8 year old daughter... A doesn't-need-anything husband Several sets of parents/grandparents Assorted nieces and nephews, aged 6 to 16 A few random adults I like to buy practical gifts (edible, clothes etc), experiences and books. Hit me with your ideas and tag some of your favourite businesses!
02.01.2022 When a client is asking for a completely new tone for their content it can be a bit nerve-wracking, even after almost 20 years of writing professionally. So getting this text this morning has really put a spring in my step. (And for those wondering what a skeleton draft is, it's usually an outline of the key messages for each page and a couple of sections written in full to make sure the tone and style is on track. An extra step that can save buckets of time down the track.)
02.01.2022 DIY. So we're painting our house. It's a bloody nightmare. And it got me thinking about DIYing your copy. Yes, you can do it yourself. And it can be a good option when budget is limited (hello, reason why I'm covered in paint splotches). But will you get as good a result? Maybe, maybe not, she says, as the patches in the paint coverage stand out in the harsh truth of daylight. . So if you're getting the equivalent of time consuming but patchy coverage, give me a holler for a quote... . #sydneycopywriter #tccscopybeast #digitalmasterchef #diyproject #copywriterlife #smallbusinesssupport
02.01.2022 Some of my clients, I love just because they're an awesome person and great to work with. One of these is Suzie at Stormn Industries - she doesn't fall into any of my standard niches, but I could not love working with her more. She's a powerhouse with multiple businesses and just great to partner with. From SEO tweaks to a couple of existing sites, through to brand new copy and tone of voice development for new brands, it's been a delightful creative challenge. Here's the ful...l version of what Suzie had to say: "I've engaged Ange for several projects across a wide scope of businesses and she always hits the nail of the head. Not only is the technical aspect of her SEO writing excellent but she gets the tone of the brand right every time. Can't recommend her enough." Yep, feeling the love, big time! Can't wait to work on more projects soon
