25.01.2022 With the warmer weather, we are most definitely spending more time outdoors with our pooches, possibly even spending the afternoons at the local dog park. Unfortunately, dog bite wounds are one of the most common emergencies we see in our hospitals after what was meant to be a fun time turns into a dog fight. If you are a dog owner, getting to know dog park etiquette may save your dog from a nasty fight.

21.01.2022 Amity's Christmas miracle and happy ending! Team members from Animal Emergency Service Tanawha (nurse Amanda and Client Care Representative Ali) were lucky enough to see a turtle they treated in conjunction with Sealife be returned back to sea on Tuesday morning. It's not often we get to see these stunning creatures, and when we do see them in our emergency hospitals they are usually suffering from floating syndrome. This happens when the turtle ingests marine debris causing... gas to build up in their stomach, eventually triggering them to float. Unable to dive for food, they must be seen by a vet professional to receive life-saving treatment. https://fb.watch/2ypPvztdie/

19.01.2022 Meet Jethro a 4-month-old Tonkinese who survived a snake attack! While outside exploring with supervision from his hoomans, Jethro was grabbed on the head by a 2-metre carpet python which then started to constrict around Jethros little body! Jethros fast-acting and fast-thinking hoomans managed to pry the python off Jethro and rushed him a near-by local vet for initial treatment before being transferred to our Carrara hospital for further care. Jethro was one lucky kitten ...whose only injuries were a humeral fracture (a fracture to his upper arm bone in his front leg) and some bite marks on his head. Usually, in cases where a snake has constricted, injuries include fractures to the ribs as well as bruising and damage to the lungs. Along with close monitoring from our team and fluid therapy to aid in hydration and blood delivery, Jethros fur around the puncture marks was clipped and the wounds cleaned to prevent infection. Jethro also underwent surgery to mend the fracture in his leg from the team at Veterinary Specialist Services. See more

18.01.2022 It's National Golden Retriever Day! Is your fur baby a Golden Retriever? Show us your fave pic of your furry friend below! Here are just a few of our favourite facts about these beautiful doggos: They are a popular choice to star in movies and television shows because they are easy to train. Did you know that they make great watchdogs, but not-so-great security dogs? They'll bark loudly at strangers, but once they physically interact with a person they become more friendl...y. They are often used on search and rescue teams because of their keen sense of smell and tracking abilities. They instinctively love to swim. They're always up for a game of fetch in the water. Last, but not least, they are known to take care of other animals, even cats. See more

13.01.2022 Meet Hayley, a 2-year-old English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who came to us after being bitten by a brown snake. When Hayley arrived, she was already showing signs of being affected by the snakes venom her pupils were dilated, she was experiencing facial twitching, and her respiratory muscles were being affected by paralysis making it difficult for her to breathe. There was also a concern as Hayley had previously been diagnosed with coagulopathy (when the bloods clot-forming ability is impaired) since snake venom can cause bleeding disorders. Our Pet ICU team administered two vials of anti-venom, pain relief, and monitored Hayleys breathing and blood clotting. After five days, with intensive care from the team, Hayleys paralysis resolved and with physio she gained the strength to stand and was able to go home to her family.

11.01.2022 A reminder to take any rubbish with you when visiting our beautiful waterways. We recently had a 13.3kg sea turtle come into our Tanawha hospital, after it was found by kayakers floating in the Maroochy River and unable to swim, submerge or dive. The turtle was very weak and puffy and is believed to most likely to have swallowed some plastic. On arrival Dr Bree, Nurse Kay and Nurse Amanda performed an examination to ensure there were no external injuries. The team continued care until the turtle could be transported to Sea Life Mooloolaba for on-going care.

06.01.2022 Meet beautiful Ollie, a 12-week-old Boxer. Ollie was enjoying an afternoon of fun, playing with his neighbours kids and being fed treats when he started to choke on one of the treats. Ollies hoomans quickly tried to dislodge the treat, however, Ollie continued to choke. Jumping in the car to go to our Tanawha hospital, Ollies breathing became laboured and his hoomans had to start performing CPR. When Ollie arrived at our hospital he was in severe respiratory distress and r...equired immediate intubation. Upon examination, Ollie had developed an obstructive pulmonary oedema a complication with chocking where Ollies lungs had filled with fluid. Obstructive pulmonary oedema is an acute medical emergency which requires intensive care but can be resolved. Ollie needed to be placed on mechanical ventilation to keep his lungs open. After just under 24 hours Ollie had improved immensely and was able to be gradually weaned from the ventilator and onto nasal oxygen support. Ollie continued to improve in leaps and bounds, and after 36 hours with us, he had improved enough to go home to his very relieved hoomans.
