20.01.2022 Educating and empowering pet guardians is an important part of the care we provide. Over the last few years we have seen unusual diseases such as canine idiopa...thic head tremor syndrome, type-4 immune mediated polyarthropathy and seizures presenting in very young dogs less than 12 months. We have included isoxazoline or isoxazoline-metabolite adverse event on our list of possibilities (differential diagnoses) and on multiple occasions seen clinical signs resolve when pets discontinue taking these products where they do occur. We have encouraged adverse event reporting to relevant drug companies. Emerging concerns raised from the use of Bravecto and Nexgard have been on our radar and we have been following the FDAs warnings on this matter closely. As many of our families live in paralysis-tick risk areas, our individualised risk:benefit analysis for what pet parents can use safely has become more complex and we have incorporated more widespread herbal liver and mitochondrial cell support recommendations into our health care plans. We are constantly revising our decision-making protocols. Last month, the FDA did state that flea and tick meds are causing neurologic issues in pets. The symptoms most often reported include muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures. It is important to note that not every pet will have issues, and we suspect in our clinic that pet's with altered gut bacteria (dysbiosis) may be at higher risk if they form more toxic metabolites as their bodies process the Isoxazolines. It is time that pet parents and veterinarians are aligned in navigating the potential risks of using these products in comparison to the risk of ticks (which can also cause neurological disease and death).
