24.01.2022 Some Tips to get you FOCUSED this week! 1. Follow Your Passion Sing because you love it, not because you think it will make you rich, popular or even famous. Thats not to say these things wont happen as a consequence, but theyre not the main event. To sustain a career in music you have to love what you do. Passion glows. If you know the only thing you can possibly do with your life is to sing and make music, its the right career for you.... 2. Look After Yourself Look after your voice and your voice will look after you (usually). Although some singers can live a rock n roll lifestyle and still have a great functioning voice, the truth is that most cant. Be a vocal athlete. The vast majority of singers train before going on tour. They warm up. They work out. They eat healthily. They have vocal coaches. Its not because its fashionable, its because its essential. Its good to find a healthy balance in your life whatever works for you. Always find time to have fun and enjoy yourself. Your mental and emotional wellbeing are as important as your physical health. Switch off, de-stress, learn to relax the body and mind and get a good nights sleep whenever you can. 3. Get Organised Singers are among the busiest people I know and in a changing music industry, being organised is essential. Aside from the basics such being on time, learning the songs etc., many singers now find themselves in the role of manager, band leader, song writer, agent, secretary, website designer, driver, roadie, label manager Thats a lot of jobs. Its impossible to be effective if you either havent got a team around you or you are not organised. Prioritise your goals in terms of practise and performance. 4. Never Stop Learning Whether its going to gigs, listening to new artists or experimenting with a new vocal technique or musical style, theres a whole wonderful world of music out there waiting to be explored. Be brave. Challenge yourself. Some of the most influential artists in popular music are those who have taken chances, experimented and pushed themselves out of a perceived limit or comfort zone. We can all do that. As part of our artistic journey we can commit to learning, creating and evolving throughout our lives.

16.01.2022 Your voice is complex. Complexity means that its difficult to learn. It also means that you have loads of options for how it can work for you. People identify deeply with their voice. This leads many to say I have one voice, and it behaves in one way. That is one option. Another one is realizing that you have many options that all feed one another. Breath is key, but breathing has more to do with allowing the body to work for you than with forcing muscular engagement.... Those eleven tiny muscles that sit inside the larynx are important, get to know their function and they will be your friends. . .but remember that you cant feel them, you can only feel the results of what they do. You vocal resonator is the only kind of resonator (all instruments have them) that can change shape, and each tiny shape change can have major impact on your sound. How you perceive sound (psychoacoustics) impacts how you shape your vocal tract. Herein lies a gold mine. Your vocal folds create harmonics. Your vocal tract amplifies or dampens those harmonics based on its shape. Learning to shape your vocal tract so that it reacts to the harmonics coming from your vocal folds is one of the main tricks in voice habilitation. The emotion we need for communicating through our voices has to be habituated as a regular part of the learning process. There are many, many approaches to voice instruction and learning. Empowering yourself with knowledge will help you guide your learning, and help you avoid being confused by different approaches. To learn more go to www.voicescienceworks.org

This is super handy to warm up your voice, but not only will it warm you up effectively, you will build strength through the transition areas when you focus on them.
