23.01.2022 Please welcome our newest artist in residence Sophie La Maitre! Sophie La Maitre is a multidisciplinary artist from Perth, Western Australia, she graduated from Edith Cowan University in 2017 with an Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in visual arts. La Maitre has a deep fascination for the unremarkable and unnoticed, pursuing a more intense engagement with the material ephemera that are enveloped within our daily life. Working in relation to the site and within it, La Maitre undergoes an intimate investigation of surfaces, objects, and the periphery that make up our landscapes. La Maitre aims to gain an understanding of the mundane using the minutiae that it encompasses.

23.01.2022 Hi, @desmondmah_ here. The Buckland riot was an anti-Chinese race riot that occurred on 4 July 1857, in the goldfields of the Buckland Valley, Victoria, Australia. There were claims that the riot was inflamed by liquor. During the riot, Chinese miners were beaten and robbed then driven across the Buckland River. I am interested in the mayhem of the day, the purging of these yellow demons through the eyes of these miners. . #contemporaryart #ink #falseidols #yellowdemons #chinesecontemporaryart #drawings#chinavswest #contemporarychineseart #artresidency #perth #racism #violence #mafumin# #chineseartist #australianartist #

22.01.2022 During his residency Brents work explored the function of public bathrooms (beats) as spaces of male intimacy. . By acknowledging the cultural significance of cruising areas as catalysts for men to explore their sexuality, With Absolution re-examines these sites as places of opportunity. Through the process of appropriating characteristics of public toilets and subverting their functionality, this body of work acts as a form of cultural resistance in an attempt to undermine ...the bathrooms conventional use . . . . . . #bathroom #engaged #artlife #art #painting #perthartist #installation #beats #waartist See more

The aim is to use this method to create distorted images that are duets of disruption and interpretation between human and machine. Another will be a space for Molloy and the machines to work together on figurative drawings. 17.01.2022 Do. Yourself. A. Favour. And listen to our most recent post! By current artist in residence Desmond Mah . Desmond will be taking over this platform to document his residency exploring the Buckland riots of 1857 which saw Chinese migrants beaten, robbed and driven from the goldfields across the Buckland river. The race riot resulted in 3 deaths but documentation of the event have disappeared from the Beechworth court house. . .... . . . #evidence #dissapear #diaspora # # # #xenophobia #artistresidency #artistinresidence #perthart #madelocal #air See more

15.01.2022 Sound on for our next artist in residence Desmond Mah Australia has a history of xenophobia, and one can start from the treatment of the first Australians. Under "scientific" racism, also known as Social Darwinism, where Indigenous Australians were portrayed as primitive and nomadic. The British Empire legitimatised that Australia was theirs under the claim of terra nullius. The aftermath of the September 11 attacks and Bali Bombing has seen the rise of misleading informat...ion about Islam and increased global hostilities towards Muslim communities. Today, the rise of China as a superpower creates complications for Chinese Australians and the wider Chinese diaspora. The accusation of Chinese spying in the guise of technology and agents among organisations had caused suspicion and loss of trust. Fears of the Chinese as a race can be traced to the European conquest by Genghis Khan & the Mongols. Early popular literature such as Dr Fu Manchu and political caricatures depict the Chinese as the Yellow Peril. In NSW, violence against Chinese miners led by the white miners, resulted in a white government policy to restrict Chinese migrations. Drawing from his Chinese heritage and the western world he lives in, Mah examines the ideas around the landscape and the culture that he lives in. He is interested in the Buckland Riot. At least three Chinese miners died and Chinese encampments including a Joss house were destroyed. Many details of this event have disappeared from the Beechworth Court House. Using personal narratives, collective memory and mythology, he would like to re-examine the event during this residency. Greg Molloy is an animator, furniture fabricator and contemporary puppeteer who combines these elements into immersive installations that consist of performing kinetic sculptures. 04.01.2022 Another new resident! Please welcome Stephanie De Biasi! She will be in residence until mid May . Stephanie De Biasi is a multidisciplinary artist predominantly working in installation. Her practice reflexively considers the consumerist society and the structural determinants that concern humanity and the environment. De Biasi explores aspects of the everyday through sculptural assemblages and still life. The employment of readymade objects acts as a common ground to connect with the audience and considers a more sustainable practice through the use of second-hand material. Her concept focuses on domestic commonalities and the impact of capitalism in our society. De Biasi is interested in interactions and behaviors between humans and objects to discover motives behind over-consumption.
