25.01.2022 John James Audubon’s Birds of America, a rare blend of art, natural history and craftsmanship, fetched more than $10 million at auction on Tuesday, making it the world’s most expensive published book. With its 435 hand-colored illustrations of birds drawn to size, the volume is one of the best-preserved editions of Audubon’s 19th-century masterpiece. The book sold for $10,270,000 to an anonymous collector bidding by telephone, the auction house said.

23.01.2022 Need help with this one, pair of English candlesticks from about 1880. I believe the inset stones have some meaning , for example the red agate represents the blood of christ , if anyone knows more please share , very difficult to find information on this subject and locating images of similar candlesticks almost impossible to locate .

23.01.2022 One of the most celebrated of all editions of Shakespeare, the Boydell Shakespeare was by any standards a monumental production. Boydell's artisans produced the finest engravings with meticulous detail. Boydell even created a type foundry, ink factory and a printing house specifically for this edition. The result was a beautiful, luxurious edition that took nearly sixteen years to produce. Boydells original plates were purchased and restored by Shearjashub Spooner (1809-1859) in 1852, after which he published a two-volume set with the somewhat ponderous title The American edition of Boydell's Illustrations of the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare, by the Most Eminent Artists of Great Britain. These will need some attention to be rebound But a great addition to the library once done . Elephant Folio and a combined weight of over 35 KG .

22.01.2022 Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t recall the JAWS Deluxe Boxed Set flying off the shelves. Or perhaps I’m mistaken and it sold like hot cakes my madcap McFarlane figure collecting memories blurring together? Either way, this diorama respects a very premium price on the secondary market today; a mint-in-box JAWS Boxed Set setting ya back at least $500. This one has the original price tag , great investment if only we could have predicted it.

22.01.2022 Great restoration on this little bible clam box , made a new end piece and reclined the interior, good for another 100 yrs hopefully .

16.01.2022 This is one of the most beautiful books ever published on camellias and the huge size of the pictures makes it highly suitable for framing. A profusely illustrated work depicting different varieties of the Camellia flower, with bright and vibrant plates throughout. A celebration of the Camellia, a flowering plant which is part of the Theaceae family.

15.01.2022 Landseer was born in London, the son of the engraver John Landseer He was something of a prodigy whose artistic talents were recognised early on. He studied under several artists, including his father, and the history painter Benjamin Robert Haydon, who encouraged the young Landseer to perform dissections in order to fully understand animal musculature and skeletal structure. Landseer's life was entwined with the Royal Academy. At the age of just 13, in 1815, he exhibited wor...ks there. He was elected an Associate at the age of 24, and an Academician five years later in 1831. He was knighted in 1850, and although elected President in 1866 he declined the invitation. In his late 30s Landseer suffered what is now believed to be a substantial nervous breakdown, and for the rest of his life was troubled by recurring bouts of melancholy, hypochondria, and depression, often aggravated by alcohol and drug use.[3] In the last few years of his life Landseer's mental stability was problematic, and at the request of his family he was declared insane in July 1872. Below is a sample of some of his works , the detail in the engravings of animals are amazing.

13.01.2022 Research required on these volumes , I did find a Keith Hall in Scotland near city Inverurie. I’m yet to see a set with anything like the metal work on these volumes. I think they are from a private library that was part of Keith Hall back around mid 1800s. Stunning contrast between crimson velvet and brass work .

11.01.2022 Elephant Folio on Shipbuilding, numerous large multi page fold outs of cross sections of ships. Amazing detail and a rare volume in any condition especially containing a complete folio of all the illustrations . Books like these are broken up and illustrations sold off separately.

10.01.2022 THE LIFE OF CHRIST 1693 The Essay on Heroic Poetry, serving as Preface to The Life of Our Blessed Lord and Saviour, reveals something of its author's erudition. Among the critics, he was familiar with Aristotle, Horace, Longinus, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Heinsius, Bochart, Balzac, Rapin, Le Bossu, and Boileau. But this barely hints at the extent of his learning. In the notes on the poem itself the author displays an interest in classical scholarship, Biblical commentary, ...ecclesiastical history, scientific inquiry, linguistics and philology, British antiquities, and research into the history, customs, architecture, and geography of the Holy Land; The volume has 60 copper prints which are incredible, for example each Saint is shown holding the instrument of his own death . In one the Saint is holding a fleecing knife and in the top of the engraving you can see he was killed by his flesh being cut from his body . Another Saint holds a large saw and he met his end by being cut in half .

08.01.2022 A beautiful family album from 1880s belonging to the Cousins Family such a shame these just get lost to time, this was an expensive album back in the day with lined velvet and hand painted flowers surrounding the photos. I am trying to find Out more about the family online. I have had the album repaired and spine strengthend .

08.01.2022 Artist Bob Tindall did the Bounty and the Tea Clipper ship, the Yongala painting shows her in the eye of the cyclone that sank her in 1911 .

Great marbling on interior and to all edges of the block . So interesting to research books and tie them to a place in time that can also be seen in the same modern setting .

04.01.2022 A walnut cupboard I recently picked up is a great way to store those large volumes that just dont fit in a normal bookcase , add in some extra shelves and replace the door panels with wire flyscreen mesh . If your door frames are strong enough you can use glass as well .

03.01.2022 Beautiful small ivory and brass christening bible , needs some repairs to box which will get done . Always interesting to look up history of owners, this one I found some online historical info on family . Beautiful delicate brass engravings on initials on front cover.

03.01.2022 Original 1880 copy Australasian Sketcher , cant locate another complete copy anywhere , features famous image of Ned Kelly . The others are facsimiles of front covers only . Also some hidden gems from the paper at that time I thought interesting. The original paper has had a restoration to stabilise any tears loose edges etc .
