24.01.2022 When the COVID-19 crisis hit, The Australian National University underwent rapid and radical change. Our teaching went online, the campus was closed, and our la...boratories were only accessible to those researching COVID-19 or supplying protective equipment to medical staff. In our homes, ANU researchers, staff and students have set up makeshift workspaces with monitors perched on piles of books, home-schooled children on our knees, and grateful pets at our feet. Amid the chaos of the COVID-19 isolation, we found salvation in the little things. We reached out to our science, health and medicine community to find out what helped them survive isolation. 14.01.2022 As a part of ANU National Science Week, the Humanitarian Innovation Society (ANU HISoc) is partnering with CGI U and IBM to host a one-week inter-collegiate virtual hackathon commencing August 8. The event is designed for students of all academic backgrounds to share ideas and design innovative ways to defend communities against a pandemic. Speakers from academia and industry will deliver a series of workshops and mentor sessions to break down the overarching issue of pandemi...c management into three main tracks: 1. Strengthening healthcare systems in developing countries 2. Creating faster and more efficient resource allocation systems 3. Innovating better technology to prevent or minimise infection All tracks are guided by experts from academia and industry with on-the-ground experience through webinars and mentoring sessions. The hackathon will commence August 8 with a weekend of workshops, followed by 5 days of design sprinting where teams can work on their solution as much or as little as they would like. They will pitch their solutions on Saturday August 15th through pre-recorded videos to a panel of judges who will decide who takes home the prize for the best solution.
