22.01.2022 URGENT MAJOR ATO SCAM WARNING This is from a Bookkeeping Facebook site, posted by a Bookkeeper: I have just posted this on all of my local noticeboards. It is scary because they provided so many details about my firm, but luckily my client asked how the other staff were coping in my absence and the caller didn't know my staff members names or how many staff I had. Please tell your clients to be very careful.... Please do not ever give your personal information out to callers even if they seem legitimate. If the ATO needs to contact you, it should come via your tax agent. Today a long term client was contacted by someone claiming to be from the ATO (tax office) They advised my client that I was on unexpected sick leave and I was unable to call the client myself. They then provided all of my contact details, office details, etc. They advised the client he had a large amount of outstanding debts, did the normal spiel about jail time etc. I am worried for all tax payers that the information the scammer provided is easily accessible on google, websites etc. Thankfully my client asked a couple of questions which the caller could not answer and so he knew it was a scam. Do not get fooled, as it can be very costly and scammers are getting better each day. They know at this time of year tax agents are flat out and they are using this to their advantage. Update - My IT providers believe that my clients emails may have been hacked and an old email may have been accessed. We password protect all emails however if a breach has occurred at either end they may have his DOB etc and can then access our password protected emails. They have checked the security at my end so at this stage it looks like my clients mail or emails were hacked without his knowledge. feeling annoyed.
