05.01.2022 Technique Tuesday- Front Squat with @isaiahs.pt --- The front squat is one of the many different variations of squats we can implement in our training routine. Because the bar placement is in front of your shoulders as opposed to being behind in the traditional back squat, the front squat places a higher emphasis on the quads as you’re required to keep an upright torso; minimising the amount of hip hinge and requiring the lifter to undergo a greater range of motion in knee f...lexion. The first step of performing the front squat is getting into the front rack position. Once the lifter has found their grip on the barbell (just outside of shoulder width), they must push their elbows through and under the barbell and position them as high as possible. This activates the front deltoids and create a shelf for the barbell to rest on. After achieving the front rack position, the lifter then unracks the barbell; inhaling and holding their breath to increase intra-abdominal pressure (to keep their spine rigid) before taking 2-3 steps out and shuffling their feet into position (toes slightly pointing outwards to engage the Glutes). The lifter then inhales and holds their breath again bracing their core before descending as far down as their mobility allows them, while keep their elbows up for the front deltoids to remain active for the barbell to sit on. In the descent, the lifter will always initiate the squat by hinging at their hips first (although only to a slight degree making sure the barbell always stay centred and over mid-foot) while externally rotating their hips (spreading the floor out with their feet) as their knees push outwards in the direction of where their toes are pointing. @fit.nesswithrachael @anytimefitnesswestend
