11.01.2022 BREAKING AUSTRALIA NEWS Labor hits back at Hanson Senior Government Ministers have strongly defended Australia's immigration system after Pauline Hanson warned Australia is at risk of being swamped by Muslims. ... Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has responded by saying Australia welcomes people from all over the globe. Frontbencher Scott Ryan also stood by Australia's existing policy. This morning Manager of Opposition Business Tony Burke has been on AM and said Ms Hanson should not be underestimated. We should never claim Pauline Hanson isn't smart, this is an extremely calculated speech, she's very effective at what she's trying to do - Tony Burke on AM Labor's foreign affairs spokesman Penny Wong also raised concerns. And new Labor MP Linda Burney was scathing about Ms Hanson's comments on domestic violence, suggesting perpetrators were frustrated and depressed and didn't get enough support. Quite frankly, using women and domestic violence in the way that she did in her speech yesterday was something that I find absolutely abhorrent as does the Labor Party - Linda Burney Labor MPs are lining up to criticise One Nation leader Pauline Hanson after she used her first speech to the Senate to claim Australia is in danger of being "swamped" by Muslims. Super stand-off The government has called a party-room meeting for this morning where it's likely a compromise deal on the thorny issue of superannuation changes will be on the table. Coalition MP George Christensen has previously threatened to cross the floor on the issue, and the government needs to manage the wafer thin lower house margin to get the changes through. The Treasurer has been flagging plans for a watered down deal. Domestic violence debate One of the strongest critics on Capital Hill this morning was Labor's Linda Burney. She's taken issue with these comments from Pauline Hanson's speech: Family Law would be the most discriminatory, biased and unworkable policy in this country. Children are used as pawns in custody battles where women make frivolous claims and believe they have the sole right to the children. Children have two parents and, until we treat mums and dads with the same courtesy and rights, we will continue to see murders due to sheer frustration and depression and mental illness caused by this unworkable system. Suicide is the only way out for those who feel there is no hope after facing years of costly legal battles. Their lives having been destroyed and the pain of missing their children are the reasons many end up in a state of depression caused by the trauma and in some cases the blatant vindictiveness from former partners. 11.01.2022 BREAKING INTERNATIONAL NEWS North Korea floods a 'major, complex disaster', Red Cross says North Korea is experiencing a "major and complex disaster", according to the Red Cross, after floods killed scores of people and left more than 100,000 homeless and in need of urgent help.... The charity said rescue workers were struggling to reach stricken communities in the country's far north, where thousands have been left homeless and the risk of disease is looming. "From what we saw, it is clear that this is a very major and complex disaster," head of the Pyongyang office of the International Federation of the Red Cross, Chris Staines, said after visiting the affected areas. At least 133 people are known to have died after torrential rains triggered massive floods that tore through villages, devastating entire communities and washing away buildings. Hundreds more are missing and 140,000 people are in urgent need of food and shelter. The damage to crops and houses caused by heavy flooding of the Tumen river in Koeryong in North Korea "The floods came through with such force they destroyed everything in their path," Mr Staines said. "People were salvaging whatever possessions they could from piles of debris that used to be their homes." Some 24,000 houses have been totally destroyed and thousands more damaged, with the full extent of the disaster still emerging as rescue workers battle to reach areas that have been totally cut off, the Red Cross said. Mr Staines said there was barely a building left unscathed in some villages they had visited on the outskirts of Hoeryong City, which lies on the Tumen River on North Korea's border with China. "People displaced from the floods are now in a very difficult situation and there are real risks of secondary disasters, particularly relating to people's health," Mr Staines added. At least 100,000 people in Hoeryong City do not have safe drinking water, with up to 600,000 people in the affected area facing disruptions to their water supply, the Red Cross said. The disaster is set to worsen North Korea's already chronic food shortages, with about 40,000 hectares of farmland inundated just weeks before the local maize and rice crops were due to be harvested. "Their loss is another disaster that will be felt in the coming weeks and months," the Red Cross warned. The impoverished nation is vulnerable to natural disasters, especially floods, due partly to deforestation and poor infrastructure. At least 169 people were killed by a massive rainstorm in the summer of 2012. Major state resources are swallowed up by a missile and nuclear weapons programme Pyongyang says is essential to deter US aggression. 08.01.2022 BREAKING AUSTRALIA NEWS Cocaine greeting cards shut down Brisbane police station A man who went to police after finding white powder inside a greeting card he received triggered the evacuation of a Brisbane police station, after authorities feared the powder - later discovered to be cocaine - was anthrax.... Officers set up a 50-metre exclusion zone at Boondall Police Station on Monday evening, a Queensland Police Service spokesman said. The recipient had spotted white powder in one of two greeting cards which were delivered by mail from the UK to an Aspley address earlier in the day. He put the cards into a plastic bag and went to police, where he asked for help. Police were forced to set up an exclusion zone while the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service conducted a dip-test on the powder. Preliminary results suggested it was cocaine but it has been sent to the John Tonge Centre for scientific analysis. Police are working with their UK counterparts to determine who sent the greeting cards. Stay tune onto your number 1 Hit Music station.. 08.01.2022 BREAKING AUSTRALIA NEWS Former minister Stephen Conroy announces retirement Labor Senator Stephen Conroy has announced his intention to retire from politics.... Senator Conroy made the announcement in an unusual fashion, tabling a speech in the Senate last night outlining his impending retirement. The ABC is yet to confirm a date for his departure. His speech, which was tabled but not read, stated that it was "time to say farewell". "You should always go out on top," it states. "... It has been a great privilege to serve as a Senator for Victoria, as Leader and Deputy Leader of the Labor Party in the Senate and as a Cabinet Minister in two Labor governments. It is also a great responsibility." Senator Conroy tabled the speech around 9pm, telling the chamber "as it is very late, I seek leave to table the rest of my contribution so we can move on". The speech singles out former prime minister Julia Gillard, as well as Wayne Swan, Jenny Macklin and Tanya Plibersek. "No-one can survive 20 years in the Federal Parliament without a genuine group of friends," he said. "It's no different in my case. I have had the privilege of serving with and being friends with a group of passionate and dedicated Labor icons." Senator Conroy also marked the pressure of the job, citing "glances and scowls as you walk down the street" in addition to media coverage. He also noted the need to spend time with his family. "When you resent being in Canberra because you are missing your daughter's soccer training it is time to retire from the Federal Parliament," he said. The news caught Ms Plibersek by surprise the Acting Opposition Leader was holding a media conference when the speech was made public. She said she had only just been made aware of the news and would speak to Senator Conroy later today. Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese would not be drawn on whether he knew of Senator Conroy's announcement or whether Ms Plibersek should have been made aware. Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra that "frankly, it's none of your business". "I think it's really important that people be treated with respect," he said. "Stephen Conroy has always treated the party with respect, he's treated the Parliament with respect by informing the Parliament." Stay tune onto your number 1 Hit Music station.. 04.01.2022 BREAKING AUSTRALIA NEWS NSW Police potentially carrying out hundreds of unauthorised gun searches, review finds New South Wales police are potentially carrying out hundreds of unauthorised searches in a bid to tackle gun crime, a review into the state's firearm laws has found.... Under beefed-up powers introduced in 2013, police are allowed to search people subject to a Firearms Prohibition Order (FPO) without the need for a warrant. The Government asked the NSW Ombudsman to monitor the use of the laws for the first two years. The review, which has now been tabled in Parliament, has found the powers were used extensively, with 400 people subject to a FPO being searched in total. But the ombudsman found police had also conducted searches of more than 200 people who were not subject to a FPO. Acting ombudsman, Professor John McMillan, said he was concerned the searches might have been carried out unlawfully. He said this had been caused by poor wording of the legislation. "The new power is badly-worded, and so we found some instances in which our view is that there's probably unlawful use of the power," Professor McMillan said. "We recommend that the law should be amended to strengthen it so that, in appropriate circumstances, police can do a more effective search of a group that does include somebody against whom an order has been made." Law needed to be more clear: Greens Greens MP David Shoebridge said while he supported the powers, the law needed to be more clearly worded. "[There is] the potential for warrantless searches to be used in an oppressive [fashion], on some occasions more than 20 searches against one individual," he said. "It's another case of the Parliament handing a very broad, very unstructured discretion to the police and just hoping the police will get it right. "Time after time, we see that the legislation is so broad, the powers are so general that they're open to abuse." Mr Shoebridge said there was a need for a broader review to ensure the laws were applied appropriately. "I hope that this report prompts a discussion not just about this particular aspect of expanded police powers, but a broader review by the Parliament to see if the last 15 years of just handing more and more blanket powers to police is really the best way to keep us safe," he said. The Government has previously said it would carefully consider the ombudsman's report and take advice on its recommendations. Stay tune onto your number 1 Hit Music station.. 03.01.2022 BREAKING AUSTRALIA SPORT NEWS Jarryd Hayne: Titans player shown in video with alleged Hells Angels bikie A social media video of star Gold Coast Titans recruit Jarryd Hayne with an alleged bikie, who is holding up $5,000 cash he says Hayne gave to him, has been passed on to the NRL's Integrity Unit.... The video, posted on Snapchat, showed Hayne with alleged Hells Angels bikie Chris Bloomfield on Saturday night, a day after the Titans lost an elimination final to the Brisbane Broncos. Former Titans winger Nene Macdonald also briefly appeared in the video. The post showed Bloomfield holding $5,000 in cash which he said Hayne gave to him. But Bloomfield's lawyer Adam McGill has told the ABC Bloomfield was a former professional rugby league player and had become friends with Hayne through football. He said the pair were just catching up and had not seen each other for a long time because Hayne had been playing overseas. 'It's very, very innocent' Mr McGill said the money in the video did not show anything illegal being carried out. "That's just the boys being the boys and a bit of tomfoolery," Mr McGill said. "I think it was a bit of showboating on Chris's behalf, but there was certainly nothing illegal or sinister in relation to the money, they were just showboating. "At that stage they had all been drinking and like a lot of Australian males they tend to put on a bit of a show. "Obviously it was Jarryd's money, Chris got it and he was just making light-hearted comments in relation to 'this is what he gave me'. "He never gave him the money, he just gave it straight back to him." Mr McGill said it was only an issue because Bloomfield was a member of an outlaw club. Insincerity costing Hayne fans "Just speaking to my client this morning, he still doesn't understand the circumstances or why everybody is making such a big deal out of the whole situation," Mr McGill said. "It's very, very innocent." Former NRL player and leading sports lawyer Tim Fuller said Hayne could be punished over his association with an alleged outlaw bikie. "Ultimately what the NRL will do after they investigate along with the Titans of course ... will look at it and decide whether he has basically brought himself, the sport, or the club, into disrepute," he said. The Titans are liaising with the NRL's Integrity Unit and the players over the matter. They said they would speak with Hayne before commenting further. The ABC has contacted the NRL for comment.
