25.01.2022 Yay! Although It's hard to find time to gather everyone at this time of year, a few of us managed to do that last night. Time to celebrate what we have been able to achieve this year, despite a few bumps in the road. Thanks so much for supporting us. Covid hit only weeks after we moved into Barkly Square in February 2020. We used those next few months to put our heads together and cook up a plan that we thought was worth giving a shot. WordsWorth communicating set up ou...r new website and online store, and we jumped right in to the online dinners, desserts and delivery world! Wow! Thanks to all you awesome customers, we got through those next few months fairly well, and were then able to open the cafe doors again as soon as restrictions eased up! Over the past couple of months we have done our best to take your tastebuds on a foodie tour of our homelands, and support other refugee and migrant women who have set up their own businesses and brought you fab gift ideas. Planter pots and Polish paper art by Magda, cushions and bags by Nyibol and Mary at A Tuk, aprons by Mary, and flowers by Fiona. The colour, diversity and interest they bring to the cafe, really top it all off. Happy Christmas from all of us at APOC. These extra goodies will be on sale from 4pm today only - until sold out (they will go fast). 13.01.2022 Three years ago.... soon after running a fundraiser event at The Lost Ones, to raise funds for the making of our book "It Takes Courage - sharing secret recipes and stories from our homelands". Fast forward three years .... who would have thought we would have been running a cafe and catering business - during a pandemic?! The most important thing is that three years on...we have a team of women from diverse cultural backgrounds employed and now sharing their cultures and favourite dishes in a cafe, supported by YOU! We are really excited about what 2021 may bring (pssst....stay away covid!). With more people aiming to be back working in the building (Barkly Square), and the wider community being SO supportive, we hope to be able to increase our opening days/hours. Her very traditional way of slow cooking her dishes, tied up with a lot of her familys "secret" extra touches.... make it almost impossible for any of us to replicate and keep up her incredibly high standard! THE GREAT NEWS IS.....Dung (pronounced "Yoong") is coming back to the APOC kitchen! We are so excited tha...t she could come back a day a week at such short notice. It was like eating at the best Malaysian restuarant, without driving anywhere, leaving the warmth of my home, or taking off my daggy slippers! On this occasion, it was paired with steamed green beans, fresh coriander and fried capsicum, but I can also recommend the beef rendang with a range of vegetables, rice and/or flat bread. Gado Gado means jumbled mix, which refers to all the different seasonal veggies and ingredients that are used. It has its roots in Sundanese and Javanese cooking and is typical street food in Indonesia and Malaysia. Lillys Mum made this all the time when she was growing up in Malaysia. 02.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day! Two days ago we posted a photo of Nyibol Deng and her interview with Eadie Lifestyle. Today, on March 8th - International Women's Day - meet our Kitchen-Cafe Co-ordinator (plus cook and baker extraordinaire!) - Lilly Wright. Lilly's home town is Kota Tinggi, in Malaysia. Lilly was asked "Who are the women that have made the biggest impact on you and your journey so far?" Her response:... "My Mum. She taught me deep valuable messages such as love, integrity, hard work, not giving up, and being creative. Not seeing her for the past 4 years is the biggest misfortune. But I still feel close to her heart. Other women such as Shiree (A Pot of Courage Founder and Co-ordinator) as a mentor, teaching me a lot about running a business.
