20.01.2022 Today marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Australian prisoners of war at Changi. While many Australians know of the heroic deeds of Weary Dunlop, t...he illustrious and indefatigable surgeon who assisted the wounded and dying, less will know of Corporal Rodney Breavington, who was executed on 2 September 1942 at Changi Beach for trying to escape. British and Australian officers witnessed the execution; they later wrote that Corporal Breavington faced death with remarkable fortitude. 15.01.2022 Imagine you were born in 1900. When you are 14 World War I begins and ends at 18 with 22 million deaths.... Soon after, a global pandemic The Spanish Flu , kills 50 million people. You come out alive and free You are 20 years old. Then, at age 29, you survive the global economic crisis that began with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and hunger. At 33, the Nazis came to power. You are 39 when WWII begins and ends at 45. During the Holocaust (Shoah), 6 million Jews died. There will be more than 60 million deaths in total. When you are 52, the Korean War begins. At 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends at 75 A boy born in 1985 thinks his grandparents have no idea how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and disasters. Boy born in 1995 and now 25 thinks it's the end of the world when his Amazon package takes more than three days to arrive or when he doesn't get more than 15 `` likes '' for his photo posted on Facebook or Instagram. . In 2020, many of us are living comfortably, we have access to different sources of home entertainment, and we often have more than we need. But people are complaining about everything. However, they have electricity, telephones, food, hot water and a roof over their heads. None of this existed before. But humanity has survived much more dire circumstances and has never lost the joy of living. Maybe it's time to be less selfish, to stop complaining and crying.

14.01.2022 #MuseumAtHome Just months before he sailed for Gallipoli a young Australian soldier on leave in Egypt recorded a letter to send home. This unique artefact is t...he oldest known recording of an ordinary solider at war. In Episode 17 of the Collected Podcast, Louise Maher hears the story of the Lanser disc and other recorded letters and messages which enabled families on the home front to hear the voices of their loved ones serving overseas. Listen to Collected and other War Memorial podcast, research a family member, explore our interactive digital experiences, and watch videos about the amazing objects in our collection. https://www.awm.gov.au/visit/museumathome

11.01.2022 Whilst this is long read it gives an small insight into how much pride Appin residents had all those years ago & still have today. The War Trophy was a German Machine Gun it was delivered to Appin residents with much pomp & Ceremony. The last know trace of this machine gun was given to Campbelltown RSL some years ago by the Percival/Darcy family, it has now disappeared. Checks with the firearms registry have revealed nothing. The hall that is referred to in this article was ...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Today is Vietnam Veterans Day. Each year, on 18 August, we commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 10...8 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, but there was evidence that many more bodies had been carried away. #VietnamVeteransDay Read more about the battle of Long Tan: http://ow.ly/A1k550AT7He Image: After the battle of Long Tan weary men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiments, gather on a landing zone for a quick meal before returning to the battlefield. 04.01.2022 The Kapooka Tragedy, one of the saddest days in Wagga's history occurred 21st May,1945. There was an explosion in a bunker at the Kapooka Army Base that took th...e lives of 26 engineers (2 sergeants, 2 corporals & 22 sappers). These photos show the funeral procession for those men heading along Edward St towards the Wagga Cemetery. The top photo was taken from the Wagga (now Astor) Hotel looking at the verandah of the Great Southern Hotel on the western corner of Baylis St. It was estimated that more than half the population of Wagga lined the streets in honour of the men. (Sharing Wagga Wagga & District Historical Society photos) Footnote; Just 2 hours after this was posted, several people had commented that, although they grew up in Wagga, they had heard nothing about this tragedy until now. 03.01.2022 Last Post Ceremony _ The Australian War Memorial.html https://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/last-post-ceremony A lot of people are not aware that you can apply for this if you have a loved one or family member who's name appears on the roll of honor. It is the most special ceremony done with pride & dignity. The soldiers name is researched by the Australian War Memorial archives, & this is read out & presented to the family on the day. It is the most moving beautiful & moving ceremony, It may take 2 years for your request but it is so so worth the wait.
03.01.2022 The Winning number is 7015 THANKS everybody for your support to the construction of our War Memorial.
