24.01.2022 META EXHIBITION SELECTIONS #1 Congratulations to Louise Lim, YEAR 11 GATE VISUAL ARTS for her successful selection in META 2020 Gallery Central. Louise's work i...s a series and is on display until Saturday 22 August. See this link for online catalogue and gallery details. https://www.instagram.com/metagallerycentral/ "Where Do I Belong?" Louise Lim photography and digital illustration My work is a series of portraits intend to show the inner-conflict between the two personalities of young Asian-Australians heritage and western culture. Influenced by prints of emperors and empresses from different Chinese dynasties and eras, the history and aesthetic of these prints merges with modern portraits through photography representing the conflict between two alter egos. Japonisme inspired the vivid colour and flat imagery. I incorporated symbolic objects from Chinese emperors and empresses such as ornate robes and detailed head-dresses to establish Asian-Australian connections and the traditional Asian customs and standards Asian-Australians face in westernised society as they try to stay connected with their roots, but also explore themselves.

22.01.2022 On the sunny Wednesday of Week 8, Mr Ric Boelens Year 7 Science Academic Extension class visited Murdoch University. Students participated in three activities during the day. At the Anatomy Museum, students learned about different ways of preserving animal specimens and the morphology of animals. It was a shame that no photos were allowed in the museum, but students were amazed to learn about the distinguishing features of the various body systems in different animal species.... Students also participated in the Bandicoot in a Box activity, where students learned about the importance of Bandicoots (quendas) for our environment. They then became taxonomists and developed taxonomic trees to demonstrate the proposed evolutionary relationship between the bottle cap specimens. It was a great activity to revise their previously learned knowledge of dichotomous keys and classification from earlier in the term. The last activity was The Amazing Race, which was a fun, engaging activity that allowed students to explore the Murdoch University campus while developing their teamwork and communication skills. Teams of students were provided with a map of numbered locations they must visit and complete a challenging task. Students submitted their answers at the end of the game, and the winning team took home some Murdoch university souvenirs as their prize! 21.01.2022 Year 8s-10s from Applecross Senior High School's Gifted and Talented Education Visual Art program have begun painting near the West entrance at Westfield Booragoon. The Melville themed murals are the final outcome of their Public Art workshop, run by tutors, and local artists, Mikaela Miller and Marney Anderson. In this Saturday workshop series, students learnt about illustrating the story of a place and creating imagery, colour schemes and patterns suitable for application i...n the public space. The install will continue this coming Saturday, 14th November. "This artwork depicts the story of our beloved suburb Melville, showing the elements that give Melville its personality. Together, we brainstormed features that make Melville special and used these as the basis for our designs. After deciding which of our illustrations to include, we used Adobe software to perfect our designs and compositions, making the art application-ready! The Gifted and Talented Visual Art students of Applecross 2020 have worked hard to show you our representation of Melville." Public education in Western Australia City of Melville

20.01.2022 META EXHIBITION SELECTIONS #2 Congratulations to Sean Cameron, YEAR 12 GATE VISUAL ARTS for his successful selection in META 2020 Gallery Central. Sean's work i...s an amazing pencil drawing and is on display until Saturday 22 August. See this link for online catalogue and gallery details. https://www.instagram.com/metagallerycentral/ 'Oh To Be Opened' Sean Cameron Graphite on paper Through my piece, I wished to discuss my experience of being gay and the fears of coming out. The term oh to be opened largely representing the idea of releasing all my pent up fears and emotions and showing myself for who I really am. I constructed myself to appear somewhat mutated through the placement of eyes on my face to discuss how unnatural and out of the ordinary I used to feel due to my sexuality. I used graphite pencils to reference my past work as a lot of my fears of coming out surrounded been seen different by my peers or my family; thus, I wished to demonstrate how I am the same person as before. Through biblical references such as the halo, as well as my hand placement, I am able to discuss the period of my life in which I first saw a difference between myself and the other people around me and my somewhat religious background. Although my religious peers have never openly criticised me, the harmful ideologies particular religions can promote surrounding the LGBT+ community had left a stain on myself and my identity. However, Ive become proud of who I am - an idea I aimed to promote through this piece.https://www.instagram.com/metagallerycentral/
