Key points: International protests have thrown light on police treatment of Indigenous Australians Police Minister David Elliott called local protests "not my kind of cause" Senior politicians said they were concerned for public health amid the pandemic NSW Police took organisers to court, concerned the event would breach COVID-19 public health orders about social distancing after about 10,000 people flagged an intention to attend. Justice Desmond Fagan acknowledged he was balancing the recognised right of public assembly against health risks, but ultimately said a rally of even 5,000 people was "a very undesirable idea" given the current health advice. "The exercise of the fundamental right of assembly is not taken away by the current public health order, it is deferred," Justice Fagan said. Before the hearing, organisers declared the rally would go ahead regardless of the outcome of the court case. Justice Fagan acknowledged the rally's aim was to raise awareness about Indigenous deaths in custody, among other issues. "There is no doubt that cause is one that is widely supported in the community and with great strength and feeling," he said. But he said granting a court order to allow the rally would amount to "a defiance of a judgment that has been made by ministers of the government and the public health officials that advise them". 17.01.2022 Breaking Australia News Another Police Brutality in Australia Police officials say they are investigating an incident in which officers were filmed pinning an Indigenous man to the ground, with claims one officer punched the man while arresting him in Adelaide, South Australia.... The incident happened on Albert St, Kilburn, about 9.30pm yesterday. The video was posted on social media this morning. Witnesses claim it shows officers using excessive and unnecessary force to arrest Noel Henry, 28. Those witnesses allege it all unfolded because Mr Henry was riding a bike without a light or helmet. Police say they were originally called to a report of domestic violence, in which a woman was hurt and taken to hospital. Police is Australia are projecting more violence and criminal behaviour than criminals themselves. Members of the public are encouraged to take live videos of Police brutality and attacks on the public. 06.01.2022 Breaking South Australia News More than 100 Police Officers in quarantine as South Australia goes into Lockdown Amid Corona Virus Outbreak South Australian Commissioner Stevens said more than 100 police officers were currently in self-quarantine.... "We had 99 police officers from the cluster associated with Peppers, and as a result of activity at the Lyell McEwin Hospital there were a further 18 police officers who were required to quarantine," he said. "A lot of those officers are expected to come away from quarantine quite quickly. "As for the officers involved in the Peppers, essentially most of them are likely to have to do the 14 days quarantine." About 5,000 people in total are in quarantine. Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said the particular strain of the virus in South Australia was breeding "very, very rapidly" with a short incubation period of about 24 hours, and with infected people showing only minimal symptoms. Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said there would be a further eight-day period of significant restrictions, with some "concessions", after the initial six-day "circuit breaker". SA Premier Steven Marshall called the measures a necessary "circuit breaker" to allow for a contact tracing blitz on cases linked to the Parafield cluster. 02.01.2022 Breaking India News Indian Airports Not In Compliance with International Safety Standards To prevent aircraft overshooting runways, like at the Calicut airport, where an Air India Express plane crashed on landing in the rain, world's major airports have a safety mechanism called arrestor beds to slow down or halt a plane if it overshoots the runway.... The basic idea is to have a "soft ground" that deforms easily under the weight of the aircraft that has shot the runway. As the aircraft's tires crush the material it is made of, the drag slows it down. The Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is one of the most common safety mechanisms in use around the world. A standard EMAS can stop an aircraft from overrunning the runway at approximately 65 miles per hour in fewer than 300 feet. It was an aircraft overrun in New York in 1984 that was the catalyst in the development of EMAS. The first EMAS was installed at New York's JFK airport in 1996. Since then over 100 airports around the world have installed the system. The FAA defines 'engineered materials' as 'high energy absorbing materials of selected strength which will reliably and predictably crush under the weight of an aircraft'. The actual material, however, varies depending on the manufacturer. For instance, while the US company Zodiac Arresting Systems used blocks of lightweight, crushable cellular concrete material (glued in place at the end of a runway that break apart under the aircraft's weight), the Swedish company Runway Safe AB's EMAS system has a foamed silica bed made from recycled glass. The FAA lists at least 15 incidents in the US where EMAS systems have safely stopped overrunning aircraft, carrying 406 crew and passengers, aboard those flights. In India after the Mangalore crash in May 2010, which killed 159 people, a court of inquiry report said table-top runways (like in Calicut and Mangalore) should have arrestor platforms, such as the EMAS. However, airports have cited the high operational and maintenance cost of the system to not install it in India. A 2018 report in The Hindu, quotes the then Calicut airport director saying: "The EMAS technology was unsuitable for the Calicut airport. How can we bear the cost of Rs 100 crore for an imported technology". Meanwhile, 17 bodies of Kerala's Pettimudy landslide victims were recovered on Sunday, taking the toll to 43. 27 people are still missing.
