25.01.2022 This morning COSA released new recommendations stating that exercise should be prescribed to all cancer patients as a standard part of their care. In line with ...the APAs endorsement of the statement, APA National President Phil Calvert commented The majority of patients with cancer currently do not meet exercise recommendations despite many expressing a desire to be sufficiently active. They need advice and ongoing support to do this. Increasingly, cancer specialists are recognising that physiotherapists provide a highly beneficial exercise treatment program that ensures the patient is participating in physical activity appropriate to their condition. 25.01.2022 Did you know we do Pre-Pointe assessments? Pointe shoes are special ballet shoes, that allow dancers to rise, turn, balance and jump on their toes. Dance teachers will identify that a dancer may be ready to start pointe work, and may ask the student to complete a pre-pointe assessment by a dance physiotherapist prior to commencing. A pre-pointe assessment is an objective functional assessment and is utilised to assess the dancers readiness in starting pointe and to identify ...any factors that may limit the dancer from starting pointe, and to reduce the risk of injuries. Q&A: What do I wear? Normal dancing clothes are fine What questions will I be asked? The physio will ask about your current training load, previous ballet training and previous/current injuries. What assessments will I have to do? The physio will assess your range of motion, control and strength, particularly in the lower limbs. What if I dont pass? The physiotherapist will provide individualised exercises to work on for a period of time, and then you will be invited back to re-do the assessment. 23.01.2022 Our amazing Sinead is looking forward to the GLA:D course this weekend, hosted by a few great presenters Dr Chris Barton, Prof Pete OSullivan & JP Caneiro. GLA:D is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. Research from the GLA:D program in Denmark shows symptom progression reduces by 32%.... Other outcomes include a less pain, reduced use of joint related pain killers, and less people on sick leave. GLA:D participants also reported high levels of satisfaction with the program and increased levels of physical activity 12 months after starting the program.

08.01.2022 Common Misconceptions! Picture 2- Up to 30% of pain-free people in their 20s will have disc bulges. By the time people are in their 80s, up to 85% of pain-free people will have disc bulges. This suggests that disc bulges are a normal part of ageing, like grey hair and wrinkles are, but pain independent of a disc bulge is a different story. Picture 3 - Not only does recreational running NOT cause arthritis, but has actually been shown to be protective against hip and knee arth...ritis. Recreational runners generally have lower rates of arthritis than sedentary populations due to the health benefits of weight-bearing exercise on joint-health.
