25.01.2022 Hi guys, hope everyone have been eating enough food, as our stomach is our second brain, and what we eat impacts how we think. Also check out our website at: https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

23.01.2022 My topic this week is Why should we talk about our mental stuff. Approximately one person in every four have enough mental health difficulties or stuff to be diagnosed, and the other 75% have stuff that impacts their ability to function at their highest level. When we talk about our stuff to a person outside our emotional bubble, we can learn strategies or ideas to improve our general wellbeing. If a person doesn’t have anyone outside their emotional bubble to talk to, this is where a GP, or mental health professional such as a psychologist can be useful. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

22.01.2022 This week’s topic: Goal setting and the FAIL acronym. Setting a goal can be hard and achieving that goal even harder. Step 1 set a goal, even if it is vague to start. Step 2 define the goal, using SMART templates, Pro/Con lists, skeleton notes or even mind-mapping the goal. Step 3 set smaller goals to achieve the end goal, with regular progress (no matter how small) people are more likely to achieve. If there are set backs that is okay. Setbacks are opportunities to learn and improve for your next attempt. Remember FAIL means First Attempt In Learning. Nothing great from the individual to societal level was ever achieved without failure along the way. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com

21.01.2022 This week’s topic: what is over-compensating. In the modern world with social media and instant access to other people’s negative opinions it is easy to feel lesser. When people feel poorly about themselves this can lead to different coping strategies. One such strategy is over-compensating. A person often does this in order to prove to themselves or other people that they are deserving of attention or that they are managing their difficulties better than they really are. It ...is not the behaviour itself that should be judged as over-compensating it is the purpose behind the chosen behaviour. Common over-compensating examples include spending money they cannot afford to spend, wearing clothing that they normally wouldn’t in order to appeal to a certain demographic, or performing tasks that are unhealthily outside their comfort zone in order to be perceived as managing better then they are internally. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/ See more

21.01.2022 This week's topic respect in regards to mental health. All people regardless of demographic history and standing deserve to be treated as a person. Sometimes this may be difficult when their views do not match our own. Understanding our own biases allow us to understand why we may favour some people over others, and allow us to be more empathetic when talking to someone whose views do not match our own. The take home message - treat people the way you wish people would treat you. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

20.01.2022 Good morning all, this weeks topic motivation. Motivation is a complex topic but can be broken down into 3 aspects and one forgotten aspect Internal (I do this for myself), External positive (I do this so a goal can be achieved), External negative (I do this or the goal won’t be achieved) and Value. Value is how we prioritise and is often based on our value system. Value can be the hardest aspect of motivation to understand but once understood, the 3 other aspects of motivation become easier. Cheers from Apt Psychology Townsville

19.01.2022 This weeks topic: Mental Health vs Mental Illness. Mental Health can be thought of as a spectrum where at one end we enjoy life, feel that we are functioning well and contributing to our local community. Mental Illness falls at the other end of the spectrum where the person is having difficulty managing their mental health and would greatly benefit from support from friends, family and professionals. Regularly checking in on your friends and family may help improve their mental health regardless of where they fit on the spectrum of mental health. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

17.01.2022 Since last year I have reshaped my business focus. For any counselling referrals I will now be seeing them as part of the OnBundock team. This will mean I will now have access to a large library of psychological assessments that can be used to assess for personality disorders, anger management difficulties, trauma symptoms, etc. The other focus of my business will now be psychological consultation. Some examples I have planned for the year include supporting 4+2 provisional psychologists with presentations about supervision, the national exam, etc. along side another colleague, as well as other presentations that look at problems solving strategies, and areas of interest such as epigenetics (gene expression) and mental health.

17.01.2022 Thankyou for visiting Apt Psychology Townsville. For any Psychology Consultation inquiries please contact 0431 629 964 to organise a time and location. For all counselling inquiries we are now working as part of the OnBundock Team.

13.01.2022 This week’s topic: Stigma and Judgement. As humans we are built to make judgements. This can help us stay alive such as judging what berries are poisonous and if we should swim between the flags. However, judgment can also be a negative thing. It is very natural when we don’t understand something that we will have a negative judgement and subsequently add blame, and eventually stigma. This adding of blame and stigma can be used to make us feel powerful by externalising our ow...n misunderstanding in the way of insults, or apathy. For example, when we don’t understanding that mental illness is as legitimate as any medical illness it is easier to blame the one suffering from mental illness than it is to take the time to admit a lack of understanding. The good thing about being human is we can always learn to keep negative judgements to ourselves while we take the time to understand the person or context we are judging. This is difficult as it requires admitting a perceived weakness and making an effort to improve as a person. The good news is we are all capable of this positive change. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/ See more

11.01.2022 Good morning everyone. Easy way to manage and to think about self-care: half fill a jar with coloured cotton balls, everyone time you do something for someone else, take one ball out, everyone time you allow yourself to do something for you, add one, if the jar becomes empty burnout may occur.

11.01.2022 This week’s topic: Having the right tool for the right job. When a cleaner works they try to match the right chemical to the right surface, a butcher will use the right knife sharpener or stone, a GP will try to order the right blood test for the right illness, etc. In mental health we have hundreds of variations of psychological therapy. If a person is suffering from a mental health concern and have not yet learnt the right tools to assist with their thinking and behaviours it can be beneficial to speak to a professional. Some examples of mental health tools and therapies include Exposure therapy for specific phobias or critical incidents, CBT for challenging unhelpful thinking behaviours and Psychoanalysis for exploring the cause of the current long-standing mental health difficulty. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

09.01.2022 Good morning all, today's topic: How should i Communicate? We can be aggressive (get what we want through intimidation), Passive (everyone else gets what they want, but we suffer), Passive-Aggressive (indirect aggression, while still suffering) or ASSERTIVE. ASSERTIVE - Share your opinion without intimidation, have clear boundaries, be okay with saying no, start/maintain self-care are all aspects of being ASSERTIVE.

07.01.2022 This week’s topic: eating the right food. There are thousands of diets that help people become healthier in the short-term but lead to poor long-term health. The best way to improve our health is to eat a rainbow in food. The Australian government now recommends the ‘Healthy Eating Plate’ with more accurate information than the previous food pyramid, and the Queensland government has the Give colour a spin campaign helping us to eat a rainbow in vegetables and fruits. Using both resources should be your go to resource if you are unable to afford a dietician or want to improve your health on your own. Improving our nutrition is important as it will lead to improvements in physical and mental health. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

06.01.2022 A poem I wrote for PTSD parents for kids

06.01.2022 This week’s topic: Life is what happens when we are busy making plans. Plans and goals are very important for living a successful life. We all have plans for ourselves, our business, children, financial future, etc. However, sometimes we can become fixated on these plans and goals and miss opportunities in front of us. When these opportunities arise, it is important to be mentally flexible. A professional such as a business coach, pastor or psychologist can assist you in developing strategies to become more mentally flexible. Examples of skills a psychologist can assist you in developing are: Locus of control, Cognitive reframing, Thought mapping, Mind mapping, PMI and Visualisation techniques. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

06.01.2022 This weeks topic: Mental health is physical. Mental health is as physical as a broken arm the only difference is that the physical changes happen in the most complex area of our body, the Brain. Whilst we can’t see the physical changes without experience scans we can focus on the BioPsychoSocial aspects of functioning. Improving our biology (exercise, nutrition, sleep), improving our psychology (learning positive adaptive ways of thinking and perceiving) and improving our social (deep connection, intermediate connection and superficial connection) will improve our mental health.

04.01.2022 My topic this week is Why should we talk about our mental stuff. 02.01.2022 Since reshaping my business, I have been very busy. So it has been a while since my last post. I thought I would discuss toilet rolls as my new post. Now the Toilet Roll situation is international news, and as crazy as it is, there is a legitimate reason behind people's panick buying. Its called powerlessness and hopelessness, which noone enjoys. So in order to make sense of a scary scenario and in order to feel a sense of power, people chose to use their money and horde re...sources. This hoarding behaviour also gives them a sense of hope. We know in psychology land that an event doesn't necessarily cause trauma, rather it's the sense of powerlessness and/or hopelessness that is the main risk factor for a person having a trauma response. So just remember, it may seem silly, seeing videos of people hoarding toilet rolls, but we all have our own ways we seek a sense of power and control during difficult times such as COVID19. What's your mechanism/behaviour for feeling in control or powerful?

01.01.2022 This week’s topic: parenting and functioning. Most people without children understand that parenting looks hard, but it is difficult to understand the level of stress, until you choose to raise a child. Previously I have discussed our mental stuff. Now if we are lucky, we manage our mental stuff well by the time we are an adult. However, when we have poor sleep, less time, more expenses, more responsibilities, less freedoms and we have mental stuff it can be difficult to manage. When there is a potential trigger such as a child, that we as adults may subconsciously blame, it makes our functioning and our parenting even more difficult. This can then impact our physical health, our psychological health and our social and financial health. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/

01.01.2022 This week’s topic: tree branches in the brain. Previously I discussed how mental health is physical, but what is happening at the brain level when people have mental illness. In our brain we have little tree branches known as neurotransmitters. These tree branches are responsible for processing chemicals such as dopamine. These tree branches can be pruned when too much of a chemical is available (i.e. someone consumes alcohol or illegal substances) or can become inactive when not enough of a chemical is available. The difficulty with the physical side of mental illness is that we cannot see all these changes happening without fancy and expensive equipment, which makes it easy for the general population to attach stigma to mental illness. https://www.aptpsychologytownsville.com/
