25.01.2022 We are geared up for a busy Xmas eve! Don’t forget, we are closing a little early today - our Springfield team will be available until 4pm, and our Augustine Heights team will be available until 6pm. HO HO HO!!

25.01.2022 Did you know Kennels require your pet to be fully vaccinated 7 days prior to boarding with them? Each year both of our practices receive numerous last minute phone calls from panicked clients requesting vaccinations for boarding so let's prepare together! Call us today on 3288 1574 (Augustine Heights) or 3447 6392 (Springfield) to book your pets vaccination today!

25.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About LUMPS AND BUMPS | Has your pet developed a new lump or bump? If you find a lump, it is best to feel around it to confirm that it is not confused with matted fur, debris, or something else (like a paralysis tick!)... Our July senior pet month promotion includes up to two 'fine needle aspiration' (FNA) tests! A small needle is inserted into the lump, some cells are collected, then deposited onto a microscope slide. Next, the slide is viewed under a microscope to examine the specific cells so we can tell you what type of lump it is likely to be! The earlier a lump or bump is diagnosed, the more treatment options you will have - and the more likely successful the treatment will be! Book your bestie in for a senior pet check-up before July 31st and receive: A thorough 30-minute consultation A comprehensive blood and urine screen The cytological examination of up to two lumps OR An arthritis management plan (consisting of an arthritis injection or an arthritis supplement!) Valued at $350 - Pay $195! Offer ends July 31st. Call us on 3288 1574 or book online here >> https://bit.ly/3fZolkK *Available only for cats and dogs over the age of 7 years not currently displaying signs of illness.

25.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About ARTHRITIS | Arthritis is a painful, degenerative joint disease which affects most dogs and cats at some point during their senior years. Large breed dogs (over the age of 6 years) and cats over the age of 10 years are most commonly affected however arthritis can also strike younger, or smaller breed animals, especially those with a genetic predisposition to developing the disease. ... Pets are very good at hiding pain! The below points may indicate your pet has the early stages of arthritis: Limping on and off. Reluctance to rise or move. Stiffness your pet may begin to run with a bunny- hopping gait. Prolonged periods of rest (sleeps more than usual). Exercise intolerance; disinterest in physical activity. Weight gain. Reactivity when sore spots are touched (especially in cats around the lower back/tail). Lethargy or depression. Irritability. Lapsed toileting habits (dogs may struggle to access stairs and cats may struggle with high sided litter boxes). Changes in sleeping arrangements pets may sleep on the floor instead jumping up onto a bed or sofa. Poor grooming habits (especially in cats) around the lower back and anus. There is ALWAYS something we can do to help!

24.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION | Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), also sometimes called 'doggy (or kitty) dementia' is a common degenerative change that can cause your pet to become anxious, forgetful or confused. Your pet may suffer from this condition if he or she:... Wanders aimlessly Vocalises a lot (especially at night) Experiences sleeplessness Experiences inappetence Experiences urinary or faecal accidents in the wrong spot Experiences heightened anxiety if you aren't around There is ALWAYS something we can do to help! Whilst there is no 'cure' for cognitive dysfunction, we can help manage this condition (often with excellent results)!

24.01.2022 Christmas is a wonderful time... But there will always be a Labrador who eats the entire contents of someones Christmas stocking (wrappings included), or a cat ...who ingests tinsel off the tree... Like, every year. Without fail. So, if you do have a sneaky stocking snacker or a tinsel twisting tom - we've got you covered. We will be here for you, every day, except Christmas day, but intend on closing a little early on Christmas Eve at Springfield (4pm) and Augustine Heights (6pm) so our team can head home for a well deserved break.

24.01.2022 Happy ‘Vet Nurse Day’! During a typical shift, our incredible nursing team may perform a multitude of tasks including: Monitoring a complicated anaesthetic.... Collecting multiple blood samples. Encouraging a 19yr old cat who hasn’t eaten in 3 days, to eat! Assisting a family to say goodbye to a beloved pet. Scrubbing into a surgical procedure. Performing a nail clip on a bucking, 60kg Mastiff. Attending to a ‘code brown’, just before lunch. Taking a series of x-rays. Admitting and discharging multiple patients from hospital. Lending an ear to, or making a cuppa for someone who needs it. Performing wound management, post operative or nutritional consultations. Maintaining the cleanliness of our pristine hospitals. Placing an IV, first go, in a cat that planned to use every pointy ‘weapon’ in his arsenal. We are blessed to have an exceptionally high number of qualified nurses on our team. Today, we celebrate and thank them for all that they do! THANKYOU Danica, Sandra, Meegan, Emma, Stevie, Hayley T, Hayley G, Holly, Victoria, Sam, Leah, Faith, Samara, Bec & Rebecca! Special mentions go to Rhiannon and Lisa, our newest junior nurses who celebrate their first ever Vet Nurse Day, today! If you would like to share an experience that you have had with our incredible nurses, please post below!

24.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About DENTAL DISEASE| Dental issues are seen DAILY in our veterinary practice. Plaque and tartar accumulate on the tooths surface over time, so by the time a pet reaches senior status (especially is he or she has not ever had a dental cleaning procedure performed before) those teeth may be seriously YUKKY!... It is important to manage dental disease as it can affect your pet in many ways including; PAIN: Animals are extremely good at hiding pain, so even with severe dental disease, they can appear to be fine. Dental pain can grumble along and only come to attention when it is very bad - we all know how sore a toothache can be! INFECTION: Bacteria may eat away at the bone surrounding the tooth, which can lead to bacteria getting into the bloodstream. This can lead to infection of the internal organs and significantly shorten your pets life. TOOTH LOSS: We want your pet to keep all of his teeth! By having the teeth cleaned regularly we can significantly reduce the need for dental extractions caused by bacteria that eat away at the bone.

23.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About INCONTINENCE | Pet owners often use the term incontinent to describe inappropriate urination (ie after finding the odd wee on the floor). But, true incontinence only occurs when a pet is completely UNAWARE of passing urine.... In around 80% of cases of true incontinence, the problem is due to sphincter mechanism incompetence - a fancy way of saying the bladder 'neck' is weakened and cannot retain urine within the bladder. Incontinence can also be related to the position of the 'neck' of the bladder in the dogs pelvis. Changes in internal pressure when a pet lies down means that the urine can easily flow into the neck of the bladder, then leak on the outside. Your pat may have evidence of urinary incontinence if you have noticed: Wet bedding or wet patches where your pet has been lying. Damp legs (particularly in longer haired breeds). Scalding on the skin (from where your pet has been in constant contact with urine). Your pet licking around the back end more than normal. The smell of urine on your pet and his bedding. Did you know that there are medications available to assist with this issue?!

23.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About The KIDNEYS | Your pet's kidneys have an important role filtering the blood and removing waste products from the circulatory system. When kidney function is diminished, waste products in the body start to accumulate, causing your pet to become sick. ... In many cases, kidney disease goes unnoticed until the kidney's are so compromised, they begin to fail and clinical signs are recognised. Affecting mainly older cats and dogs (cats are particularly high risk), kidney disease can be diagnosed through blood and urine testing, with an annual blood test being a common occurrence for most senior pets. Your pet may be experiencing kidney problems if it: Drinks a lot of water (or has begun to consume more water than usual) Has bad breath or mouth ulcers Is losing weight (for no 'obvious' reason) Experiences vomiting, or constipation Has increased urination frequency and/or volume Early intervention is the key to prolonging life (and a GOOD QUALITY of life, at that). We can help you implement excellent management strategies to assist in keeping your pet well!

21.01.2022 Can you say comfortable?! Both of Nurse Meegan's dogs suffer anxiety and an 'anti anxiety bed' was recently recommended to her by the behavourist she is currently working with. Safe to say her husky 'Jackson' is definitely loving the new bed recommendation, which helps him sleep better during the day when she is working. Sometimes the little things can make all the difference for our special pets

13.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About 'THE COLD' | Regardless of the fact that their little bodies are covered in fur, pets often feel the cold in winter (just like humans)! Whether your senior pet is kept in or out he or she will need:... Dry, PADDED bedding (to support old joints). Bedding raised off the floor (eg low trampoline beds with a comfy topper) or sitting atop a mat. A spot away from cold drafts and damp. On extra cold nights, consider bringing your senior pet indoors to sleep. Consider a kennel for dogs or a cubby for cats. Consider a pet-friendly, bed warming device (these should always be used with supervision). Some dog breeds with little body fat (such as Whippets, or Italian Greyhounds may appreciate a coat or jumper). Gentle exercise each day to ensure the joints to do not seize up. Book your bestie in for a senior pet check-up before July 31st and receive: A thorough 30-minute consultation A comprehensive blood and urine screen The cytological examination of up to two lumps OR An arthritis management plan (consisting of an arthritis injection or an arthritis supplement!) 11.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's talk About WEIGHT MANAGEMENT | It is estimated that over 40% of Australias pets are overweight. Certain pet breeds can be predisposed to weight gain, however, in most cases, obesity is caused simply by being fed more calories than required. ... Overfeeding (in combination with a lack of, or reluctance to exercise in senior pets) means the excess calories are stored as fat and the dreaded number on the scales increases! As senior pets often also struggle with arthritis, keeping a lean body condition will only help to keep them active and comfortable for longer. We can assist you in recommending appropriate diets, or booking a specific weight management consultation to discuss exact calorie requirements (based on medical calculations) and offer tips and tricks to get the ball rolling on your pet's weight loss journey! Let's Talk About FAILING VISION | If your pet is hesitant when moving around, or commonly bumps into things (especially at night) he may be experiencing vision loss. ... Cataracts, dry eye, and nuclear sclerosis (changes to the eye lens) are some of the most commonly treated eye conditions we see in practice. Common signs of vision loss include: A cloudy appearance to the eyes. 'High stepping' (as if your pet is unsure of where he is walking). More discharge or tear production from the eyes than normal. The inability to catch or find toys you have thrown. Startling easily, or displaying anxiety when approached. Not wanting to go out at night. Bumping into objects or staying close to walls to navigate. We can thoroughly examine your pet's eyes and identify issues including increased ocular pressure, dry eyes, or cataracts and advise you on the best way to manage any diagnosed conditions. 11.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! | As pet owners ourselves, we understand the importance of regular thorough physical examinations and routine internal health screening. So, to show we practice what we preach, last week, our very own hospital cat (known as 'Queen Charlotte' to her minions) underwent her senior month health check, blood and urine screen!... We are pleased to report that Charlotte got the all clear (however she didn't appreciate the poking and prodding and gave us the cold shoulder for the rest of the day)! Book your bestie in for a senior pet check-up before July 31st and receive: A thorough 30-minute consultation A comprehensive blood and urine screen The cytological examination of up to two lumps OR An arthritis management plan (consisting of an arthritis injection or an arthritis supplement!) 10.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About CANCER | Unfortunately, our veterinarians tend to see an increased incidence of certain types of cancer as pets enter senior-hood. Cancers can appear in different forms, and not all types will be visible to your eyes. Some cancers can be benign, and some can be more sinister. ... We should check your pet if you have noticed: Sores or skin lesions that bleed easily or do not heal Unusual lumps or bumps Difficulty urinating or defecating Vomiting Weight loss Lethargy Coughing Swelling of the abdomen Unexplained lameness We can thoroughly examine your pet and engage in diagnostic tests to provide us with more information - and remember - early detection is key! Book your bestie in for a senior pet check-up before July 31st and receive: A thorough 30-minute consultation A comprehensive blood and urine screen The cytological examination of up to two lumps OR An arthritis management plan (consisting of an arthritis injection or an arthritis supplement!) 10.01.2022 The Curious Case of Leo's Disappearing Man Cherries! This handsome guy visited our Springfield Hospital last week for desexing surgery - however, Leo had other ideas and intended to hang onto his family jewels! Cryptorchidism is the medical term that refers to the failure of one or both testicles to descend into the scrotum (the bag of skin that houses them outside the body).... The testes develop within the abdomen and normally descend into their rightful location in the scrotum by 8 weeks of age. In dogs with this disorder however, one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) testicles get hung up somewhere along their journey, never making their way out. Leo was deemed a bilateral cryptorchid case - both his cojones were tucked up inside his abdomen, meaning we had a big task on our hands - to locate and remove them safely! The risk of developing testicular cancer is estimated to be at least ten times greater in dogs with cryptorchidism than in normal dogs. This is because the testicles are supposed to live on the outside of the body where the temperature is cooler (prolonged exposure to warm temperatures can cause abnormal cellular changes). Leo's surgery was successful - an abdominal incision was made (instead of one in the groin, like with 'normal' desexing surgery) and the two amigos were located and removed. We are pleased to report that Leo is recovering well at home and will keep a close eye on him during his recovery period. Get well soon, big guy!

09.01.2022 Christmas is going to look a little different for most of us this year. Many will feel a painful separation from family and loved ones and feel the burden of an extremely challenging year. But through the months of disruption, there have been some silver linings;... We have exercised outside. We have found more time to stop and smell the roses. Workplace flexibility has been welcomed. We have made more of an effort to pick up the phone and call a friend. Air pollution caused by daily commuters has improved. Whatever your faith and however you choose to celebrate today, we encourage compassion and kindness towards each other above all else. We have spent more than enough time apart this year, so enjoy your time together whenever and wherever you can. And for those who are taking a break, it has never been more deserved. Our team will be unavailable today, but if you have a pet emergency, please call our Christmas angels at the Animal Emergency Service (AES - JINDALEE) on 3715 9999 or, the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH - SINNAMON PARK) on 3462 0640. We will be back at Augustine Heights from 7am on Boxing Day. Merry Christmas from the GS Vet team xx

09.01.2022 HEATWAVE WARNING Temperatures are set to soar across Queensland this week. OUR TOP TIPS TO... PROTECT YOUR PET: All pets should have an ample supply of shelter and water. Additional water bowls should be left out on hotter days. Never exercise your pet during the hotter parts of the day. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to take your dog for a walk. Steer clear of hot bitumen. If it’s too hot for you in bare feet - it’s too hot for your dog! Never leave your pet unattended in a car or on a ute. Watch for signs of heatstroke in your pet! Collapse, excessive panting, weakness, drooling, red gums and vomiting are all symptoms. Flat faced (brachycephalic) breeds have narrow airways and are more susceptible to overheating. Don’t forget our wildlife! Leave extra containers of water out for birds and smaller animals. #dontriskit #toohot #heat #Heatstroke #summer #straya

Let's Talk About MUSCULAR ATROPHY | As pets get older, changes in diet and amount of exercise can cause a reduction in muscle mass (most commonly in the hind legs). Dietary Changes: ... As pets age, their nutritional needs change. Protein is especially important - however, most pets have a harder time metabolising protein later in life, so a special diet with easily processed proteins may help to retain the needed protein for muscle maintenance without upsetting other body systems. Exercise To Maintain Muscle: Just like with humans, diet and exercise are among the most important factors in combating many age-related ailments. If your pet doesnt already have regular exercise in his life, start slowly (perhaps with a walk about the block) and build upon this regimen until your dog is getting about 10 - 30 minutes of activity every day. 06.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About GROOMING | Older pets often have issues grooming themselves, or, can become more difficult for owners to groom for various reasons. Is your old cat becoming matted around the base of the tail - or down the backs of his legs? He may have some arthritis that is preventing him from grooming back there... ? ... Perhaps your pet's behaviour has changed? Senior dogs and cats can become increasingly 'cranky' about being handled. Perhaps the joints are sore....? Or does your pet now have warts, skin tags, lumps or bumps that bleed if you accidentally brush him too hard? Coat lustre, matting, dry skin and overgrown nails are commonly addressed by our professional groomer Margi. We can help your senior pet by trimming the toenails regularly (preventing overgrowth), grooming or bathing your pet as necessary, altering the type of groom your pet keeps, or by providing advice on how to alter your pets diet to get his skin and coat looking tip-top again! 05.01.2022 July Is Senior Pet Month! Let's Talk About HEARING LOSS | Deafness may occur as the result of old age, however certain breeds of dogs, and white or merle-coated animals can also be genetically predisposed to congenital deafness. Congenital (since birth) and geriatric deafness, or deafness due to trauma is often permanent and not treatable. ... But acquired deafness (due to an infection or a blocked ear canal) is often temporary and treatable. Your pet may be hard of hearing if you have noticed: No response to squeaking toys, clapping or other loud noises. No response when called by name. No response when you enter the room. It is difficult to wake your pet, or, he is startled when woken. Excessive vocalisation. Our veterinarians can conduct a simple physical examination to determine any possible causes of hearing loss (such as wax accumulation, an overgrowth of hair, foreign object blockages, infection, inflammation and eardrum status). 04.01.2022 Friday Flea Facts! | ARE YOU PARASITE AWARE? Fleas are tiny, dark brown parasitic insects that infest the coat and skin of pets. They can jump up to 150 times their own length, allowing them to transit easily from surrounding environments or other animals to to your pet - making them difficult to prevent. ... Fleas breed at an ENORMOUS rate - the fleas you see on your pet represent only 5-10% of the flea problem. The rest of the population is represented in the egg and larval stages found in your carpets, furniture, bedding, and garden Think about that the next time you enjoy a bedtime snuggle....! Using a flea product that controls multiple stages of life cycle is important - luckily there are many safe products available (with some targeting ticks and worms also - all in one simple treatment!). 04.01.2022 Akiraas Ouchie | Akiraa, an 11 week old Labrador puppy, had just mastered using the stairs at home, when last week, she tripped and fell - resulting in a nasty injury! After taking a series of radiographs (which confirmed she had broken her ulna and radius bones), it was decided that orthopaedic surgery would be required to fix Akiraas leg.... Because the radius bone is considered to be 'bigger' than the ulna bone (the ulna is slightly longer, but the radius is thicker), when both bones are broken, the radius is usually surgically repaired, whilst the ulna is left to heal. You can see from the post-operative radiographs that a plate and some screws were utilised. A comfy splint was placed post-operatively (so the plating site can remain still - and so that the ulna bone can heal) and we are pleased to report that so far, Akiraa is recovering well at home. We will be seeing a lot of this little cutie over the next few weeks to check and change her splints (creative bandage art will be featured!) and will keep you updated with her progress!

02.01.2022 It's Dental Month! | Did you know that by the age of 3, 70% of cats and 80% of dogs will have some form of dental disease? It is important to manage dental disease as it can affect your pet in many ways including;... PAIN: Animals are extremely good at hiding pain, so even with severe dental disease, they can appear to be fine. Book your bestie in during the month of August for a dental cleaning procedure and receive a FREE set of dental x-rays (valued at $70!). Download your voucher here! >> https://bit.ly/3fWvAcN Not sure if your pets teeth require attention? We also offer FREE dental check ups! Call us on (07) 3288 1574.

01.01.2022 How much do you know about heartworm? | ARE YOU PARASITE AWARE? Heartworm infections pose a very serious problem for both dogs and cats. The mosquito is the 'immediate host' for heartworm - meaning no contact with other animals is necessary for it to be transmitted (and can affect indoor pets too!).... Infective heartworm larvae enter the body when an infected mosquito bites a pet. The larvae migrate into the bloodstream and move to the heart and adjacent blood vessels where they mature and reproduce. Two weeks ago, Dr Rachel diagnosed a case of heartworm in a four and a half year old Labrador who missed just a few months of preventative medication. She presented to our hospital after her owner noticed a persistent cough and is now receiving specialised treatment. In general, the most obvious clinical signs of heartworm disease are coughing, shortness of breath, weakness, listlessness, and loss of stamina. A simple blood test can reveal whether your pet is infected (Pet Club members are entitled to a screening test, annually!), but the best way to protect your pet is with a regular preventative (usually given as an oral tablet or, as a yearly injection. Ask us about what preventative product might suit your pet best!
