23.01.2022 Operation Sponge Relocation Day! Aquability is inviting volunteers to take part in a world first sponge transplant operation under Blairgowrie Pier. The wall of the Blairgowrie pier is infested with ship-worm and is being replaced over the next two months, with the old timbers and the reef attached to it destined for landfill. This would result in the large and critical habitat for sponges, ascidians, fish, octopus, cuttlefish, nudibranches and crabs etc to be lost. ... Dive2U have launched a world first relocation effort to save the sponges by transplanting them from the infested timbers onto the new pier wall. The operation involves using paint scrapers to remove over 300sqm of sponges off the old wall and re-attaching them to the new wall using coral glue. There is more than 5500 individual sponges and ascidians to be transplanted, so Dive2U is calling for volunteer divers to help with animal screening, flora harvesting, transporting and plotting on weekends. Aquability has offered to help and will be hosting an "Aquability Sponge Relocation Day" on the 11th of September. Dive2U will be co-ordinating and supervising the dive on the day, and it would be great to see a strong turn out from our Aquability divers :) If you are interested in taking part, please email Rebecca at [email protected] for details.

18.01.2022 Project Sponge - The wall of Blairgowrie Pier is being replaced and normally the sponges would end up destroyed with the building works. However, local divers are running an experiment to see if the sponges can be removed and transplanted back onto the new pier wall. It is the first time a move of this scale has ever been attempted anywhere in the world, according to Kade Mills, from the ReefWatch program at the Victorian National Parks Association.
