19.01.2022 How long do aquarium fish live? Life expectancy of aquarium fish depends on the species and the conditions provided in the tank. Typical, small fish such as liv...ebearers, small characids or small cyprinids (small barbs, zebrafish, rasboras) usually live up to 2-3 years. Medium-sized fish, such as gourami or small cichlids can survive in good conditions for 5 to 8 years. Slightly larger species, such as angelfish or discus, reach the age of over 10 years. Among the common commercial species, large cichlids and goldfish, which may reach the age of 25 or even more, are considered to be record holders. Of course, they can only live up to this age if they have a sufficiently large and fully equipped tank and proper conditions assured (including a proper diet). Interestingly, the oldest known fish held in captivity was probably the Australian lungfish called Granddad living in the Shedd aquarium in Chicago. The fish patriarch survived in the aquarium for no less than 84 years. In the wild, Greenland sharks are now considered to be the longest-lived fish. This giant predator inhabits the depths of the northern Atlantic and the so-called Arctic Ocean. It grows up to 730 cm long to weigh almost 800 kg. It swims very slowly, at a maximum speed of only 2.6 km/h. These sharks grow very slowly: at a rate of approx. 1 cm per year. This means that specimens over 5 metres in length are probably 500 years old! See more
