25.01.2022 Expressions of interest After school club, run with the school term. A maximum of 6 students One or two afternoons a week... The club is aimed at children who love ponies and want to be around them but are less interested in riding. We only promote and teach kind, ethical training methods. Your child will learn how to train and care for ponies in a way that gets both child and pony really wanting to learn, and brings out their creativity and problem solving ability. Our horses and ponies come from varied backgrounds, the majority have been rescued from one situation or another. They are all beautiful, gentle individuals who are keen to participate and love human attention. They range in experience and height from 9hh to 16hh, so we can cater for absolute beginners to experienced students wanting to learn advanced training methods. Members will learn.. .Learning theory - how horses and humans learn .Positive Reinforcement (Clicker training) - an ethical, highly effective training method .Horse body language - how horses communicate with each other and how we can assess it to stay safe .Horse health and care - anatomy, feeding, hoof care, first aid and more .Activities such as groundwork, horse agility, trick training and liberty The club will be run by myself, Tanya French I have been around horses for 28 years and have been teaching for the past 11, at pony clubs, riding clubs and privately. I am a natural hoof care practitioner and have been rescuing and rehabilitating horses for many years. I have been training horses with positive reinforcement for the last 9 years. My clicker trained brumby won the yearling section of the Australian Brumby Challenge in 2014 and I have again been selected as a trainer for the 2016 event. We are.. Insured Working with children check Registered PCAV instructor The club will be run in Yarra Junction.

25.01.2022 Day 5 - morning session For all those who don't know I am a positive reinforcement trainer (Adding something the horse desires when it executes the behaviour w...e desire, food, scratches etc). I use rewards based methods as it is humane, highly effective, and above all fun for horse and human. When training new behaviours we break each one down into small steps, we can make them as small and precise as any particular horse needs. We engage the 'SEEK' part of the brain rather than 'FEAR', that is so often engaged when training with negative reinforcement. (Negative reinforcement taking away something the horse finds uncomfortable, painful, stressful, frightening, when they execute the desired behaviour). Here is the gorgeous little guy with the halter for the first time this morning. I first asked him to just put his nose on the halter and then asked for more precise targeting, his nose in the noseband. I need a few different behaviours established before I will put the halter on fully, I don't what to cause him any fear or stress. I need him to be... .Comfortable with where I'm standing next to him .Comfortable with having my hands on his face, on both sides, above his head, and behind his ears (all taught separately and then joined together) .Have a well established nose target into the halter nose band, dropping his head down into the noseband .Have him comfortable to hold his head still while I do up a buckle next to his eye After I have each part I will put them all together, and we will have a little brumby who actively seeks, and completely loves! to put on his own halter when I hold it out for him.

20.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came to our first home based clinic today!! I had a fantastic time meeting you and discussing horses and positive reinforcement all morning, I think the ponies did as well :D hope you did too. Sorry we ran over time! Very much looking forwards to the next one!

16.01.2022 This is why I love positive reinforcement training so much! Most of you know Meren's story, unhandled then had lots of scary bad stuff happen and didn't trust p...eople at all. She hasn't done any training for the last 3-4weeks, just been fed and had scratches. She put her headstall on perfectly and then immediately grabbed the worming paste tube for me, we only trained this maybe two 10 minute sessions over two days the first time she was wormed. This her 4th time ever being wormed with paste as far as I know. I don't have to hold her at all, and she holds the tube so tight she starts to squish it. As soon as it's in she asks for her carrot, no spitting it out, just calm and keen to learn new things. The ears back was at Banjo trying to steal it off her :P See more

14.01.2022 Artistic Horsemanship/Siri Fowles Classical Dressage is looking for 3 working students. Our ideal candidate is someone who already has at least a basic foundation in riding and is looking to go on with advancing and refining their skills. It would be a bonus if you have experience in some form of eastern or western martial arts although this is not essential. We would also prefer someone who is of an age that they will be able to commit for a few years 2 days a week for ap...proximately 6 hours each generally, including some weekends when we are holding demonstrations or workshops without having to worry about year 12 or uni commitments. Duties will start at mucking out paddocks, feeding out and general work initially in exchange for in-hand and ridden lessons, along with a foundation of using positive reinforcement and traditional pressure and release at a refined level. As the student becomes more proficient both at in-hand and ridden work they will graduate to tacking up, lunging and taking on daily maintenance work of a variety of horses at the high school level. In exchange, the working student will start by gaining the skills in classical dressage that will enable them to work in-hand and ridden, utilize the single pillar and move through the skills up to high-school level. Students may later be open to becoming part of the demonstration team as it develops if they are ready and interested. In lieu of basic labour, we are also willing to consider working students whose skillsets include IT or web development or use of angle load floats in exchange for lessons and training. If you think this might be you, please contact by PM with a brief description of your background in horses, your goals of what you would like out of a working student position and why you think you would suit what we’re looking for.

14.01.2022 For those who won't use treats with their horse, be aware that if the horse isn't working to gain something, as an immediate consequence of their behaviour, the...n they are working to avoid something. If you think they should work without any reward, then that's great. Please come and work for me. I'd love to have people who are willing to work for no reward in my team ;-)

14.01.2022 I'm going to be holding some open training sessions throughout the challenge. The first being this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday AM, times are flexible as I us...ually do several sessions a day. As we have have just moved to a new property and have yet to set it up for parking etc, I will have to limit cars to 3 per session. The sessions involve an explanation of my training techniques, how I plan the session, and several short training sessions with Hawk. They may also include a demonstration with VBA Jindabyne, my brumby from the 2013-2014 challenge. As we are doing this for the love of our beautiful Australian brumbies, all the trainers take full financial responsibility for their brumby throughout the challenge, whilst they are all still owned by the Victorian Brumby Association. I also plan to purchase my baby at the end of the challenge to guarantee he will have a loving and caring home for life. To help fund his journey and secure his future I'm asking $10 per person, per session attended. If you would like to attend please pm to book your place. We are located in Yarra Junction, Victoria See more

13.01.2022 In a 2004 study it was found that group housed horses learned faster than singly housed horses and were less aggressive towards their handlers. In the study, 20... young horses were handled for 10minutes 3times a week from the age of 6months old to 2years old learning basic training skills including leading, tying up, touching and giving feet. The training was organised in 43 stages. The first winter, the group housed horses passed more training stages than the horses housed singly (17 stages versus 14) and the same thing happened the second winter (27 stages versus 18). (Sondergaard and Ladewig, 2004) The findings of the study demonstrate two of the benefits of avoiding keeping young horses isolated. Other benefits of keeping horses in groups include: less risks of aggression toward other horses (Christensen et al, 2002a), decreased occurrence of stereotypies. (Henderson, 2007; Cooper & Albentosa, 2005; Bachmann, 2002; Nicol, 1999; McGreevy et al., 1995b), less activity and increased foraging time (Houpt and Houpt, 1989). 10.01.2022 Day 27 We had lovely Michelle over for the weekly photo session today. Here's a few of my favourites, to see the rest head to https://www.facebook.com/Michell...e-Knoll-Photography-133375650336855/ Thank you Michelle!!! We had a bit of a play in the yard first. Learning to stand on a new "pedestal" I made. Then Tug who loves standing on things, stayed on the pedestal while I got out some new things to target, an umbrella and the bag on the stick. Coby was really good with it all and is getting more confident with having Michelle around too :) After that we went for a walk around the property. Tug on the lead and Coby loose, he had a few good canters when he ran to catch up with us. We had a go at putting feet on the log from a few days ago too and they did it at the same time which was super cute :) He's so hard to catch after! I had to walk to him on the grass today haha got to love positive reinforcement! Makes like so much easier. See more

06.01.2022 The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. We think we know horses and one day someone comes with an information that ...disrupt our reality. We either put it in a corner of our mind, under a pile of cognitive dissonance, or we put everything we thought we knew in the bin and are left feeling mortified of the things we said and did to horses. We start building back our knowledge. This time looking at it from a more objective and scientific, less anthropomorphism and speciesist point of view. The quote "The more you know, the more you realise how much you don’t know the less you know, the more you think you know." starts making a lot more sense. Our horses start getting the benefits of our newly found appreciation for ethology and learning theory. We also gain a lot in terms of personal development (or at least I did). Because our knowledge rely on scientific evidences rather than our own opinions, we do not attach our ego to the information and are more willing to give it up when new information is presented. This way we always keep learning, always keep on improving our horses lives and our relationships with them. This is the great journey I am on, and your horse would love it if you joined in. For more info on humane, science-based horse training visit: www.fairhorsemanship.com We are running a lecture on horse ethology in June, in Cardiff UK, more details: https://goo.gl/smB9g9
