18.01.2022 I felt it was important to write this article, firstly to give as much perspective as possible surrounding the current crisis, and secondly to combat some of the alarmism, nit-picking and culture of complaint that I'm seeing around the place. While the next two to four weeks will be critical, we have reason for cautious optimism in Australia due to: - Very high rates of testing ... - Limited community transmission (very limited outside NSW) - Low hospitalization and mortality rates - Declining rate of increase in cases I also believe that the approach of keeping as much of the economy going within the health advice and reasonable risk tolerances is sensible, even at the cost of some mixed messaging. If you're in doubt by now about how to limit the spread of the virus, you're not thinking hard enough. And it's easy to call for a total shutdown when your job or business is not at stake. There's sensible debate to be had about how to stop the spread of the virus, but for many it seems to be another opportunity to grind political axes. I for one think our governments are doing a pretty good job, and leaders from across the political spectrum are cooperating well to get the job done. It hasn't been perfect by any means, but it's a damn sight better than many other countries. I'd also appreciate if people, particularly the media, stop using words like 'surge, skyrocket', 'alarm', and 'backlash'. Stop publishing ludicrous modelling that suggests millions will be infected here when there is no precedent for this anywhere in the world. Stop complaining that you're not going to get immediate cash from the government. Do we have such little resilience as a society that we can't survive a month without the government paying us? If you want to help, keep talking about the importance of compliance, and let people know how they can support the local businesses still operating.
