24.01.2022 The kids just went without formal schooling for a while. And guess what happened to senior secondary students test scores at the end of the year they went up. Up? How could that be? The students became the beneficiaries of two forced changes. Firstly, they had a break. Their wellbeing was actually enhanced by an interruption to the high stakes pressure associated with a system and a community obsessed with useless mantras such as Knuckle down. Study hard. Its the most important year of your life. Your whole future hangs on your ATAR score. As it turns out, that pressure doesnt equate to better results. Its quite the opposite. Students who reach the exam period in an exhausted and petrified state routinely perform poorly.

14.01.2022 It's almost time to return to Arcadia! We kick off 2021 on Monday (18th Jan). We are super excited to start our second year, hopefully with less Covid and more fun! Right now we're running Monday's and Tuesday's. We have limited places available both days. Our trials normally cost $25, but book before Jan 31 and your trial will be free. 14.01.2022 One of the few silver linings of Covid-Schooling is that there are now a lot more parents who are acutely aware of just how much their children are struggling at school. Be it with the structure, the curriculum, their peers or the staff. Many of those parents are now reassessing their options. Those who believe they cant are now wishing for better options, which plants the seeds of well what if there were better options, what would that look like, why is this the only way Theres never been a time before when such a large percentage of the population had the curtain pulled back and the wizard exposed for what he really is.

Today we made peppermint playdough, Christmas cards, tags and stick puppets, made candy canes disappear and the kids played a big game of "Christmas morning" where they used old wrapping paper, dress ups, puzzles and other resources to make presents to give eachother.

What I want to highlight is the need to take into account the potential emotional responses our children will show upon their return to school. I want to focus on the necessary emotional scaffolding children will need to engage in any work that we subsequently ask of them. No one is learning when theyre distressed, and I think we can anticipate a lot of distress when school goes back.

09.01.2022 When you start with an outcome, its always going to be backwards. In fact this is such a fundamental part of the education system that Teachers are actively taught to plan their years using backwards mapping. Take the outcome and work backwards to figure out what steps need to be taught when to get there. Its brilliant for planning. I use it all the time for teaching ballet where theres always going to be clear outcomes that youre trying to achieve. It has its place in schools, sure. But when everything you do in school starts from an outcome, how genuine is the learning experience?

08.01.2022 I have a creative industries degree already, but it was always my plan to go back to uni and do an arts degree. I had already decided that the extra debt would not make the certificate worth it in a world where its now possible to learn anything you want from your pocket. But I will defend the arts and creative industries faculties to the death, for they are the faculties in which we learn to understand humanity. And without humanity there wont be anything left.

03.01.2022 Most afternoons we traipse across the gully to the playground near our hall. As the year has gone on more and more of the children bring their lunch with them for a picnic afternoon tea. Right now theres birds singing, its shady and as usual we have the whole playground to ourselves, but everyone is just chilling either having a snack or working together drawing castles on a whiteboard. Its super peaceful. In 20 mins the high school kids will descend and then the park will be full of teenagers whove spent 6 hours at a desk. Hayter said that the history of Black people and other minority communities has already been completely whitewashed and erased" when it is taught in American classrooms. He pointed to the argument made by some that removing Confederate statues and iconography is tantamount to erasing history.... So when people say you cant erase history, its like, what are you talking about? he said. If you crack open a textbook from the mid-20th century, there are no minorities in those textbooks. Exploring Juneteenth and the history behind end of U.S. slavery The contributions they made to the American democratic experience are completely ignored, he said. Hayter said those histories have been seen as a footnote to a larger narrative and not an important and integral portion of the history more largely. As long as we continue to treat these as addendums to a larger American narrative, were failing these kids in large part because weve reduced these histories to second-class status, he said. The same must apply in Australia.
