Our services are designed to improve client’s literacy, life skills, self-esteem and self-confidence which contribute to improving learning outcomes and improved their achievements. Mentoring: Arcofyre is looking for community members with the time, talent and passion to work with vulnerable and at-risk offenders in both pre-prison and post-prison environments in a mentoring capacity. The role of the mentor is to act as a role model, take interest in their mentee and provide encouragement and support. Improving self-awareness, self-esteem confidence and help improv a mentee's resilience are important goals of the relationship. Researchers and practitioners often refer to Homer’s Odyssey, when discussing the ancient roots of mentoring. In it, Odysseus appoints an old friend, Mentor, to watch over his household and son, Telemachus, in his absence during the Trojan War. By nearly all accounts Mentor was a protective, guiding and supportive figure who acted as a wise and trusted counselor to Telemachus, son of Odysseus. Research tells us that helping promote areas such as self-esteem and confidence and other life skills contribute towards more engaged mentee’s and ultimately improved academic/vocational outcomes. RESPONSIBLE TO: Critical Outreach Manager LOCATION: During the course of the recruitment and screening process, mentors will have the opportunity to state any preference for location which Arcofyre will endeavor to meet subject to mentee needs. TIME COMMITMENT: Due to the need to develop a trusting and consistent relationship with your mentee in order to provide the maximum support to mentee there is a minimum commitment of one full year. If you are unable to commit to one year please contact us to discuss. HOURS: Willing and able to meet with your mentee a minimum of 4 hours per month (preferably 1 hour per week at the same time each week). POSITION DESCRIPTION: To work one on one or in a small group setting with the same mentee/s throughout your tenure as a mentor Develop a mutually cooperative, supportive relationship by undertaking activities with your student that involve sharing and are fun for your mentee that contributes towards improving confidence, self esteem, resilience, acquisition of life skills. Consider the safety of the mentee and set clear boundaries especially around ensuring your mentee at the outset of the relationship is clear on the limits of your confidentiality. Act as a resource and guide Respect the mentee’s right to self-determination and independence Help the mentee to set goals and work toward accomplishing them Serve as a positive role model, guide, and supporter by modelling desirable behaviours e.g. patience, tolerance provide information and feedback to help evaluate mentee progress and scope of the work you are undertaking Be dependable and consistent in attending mentor meetings Respect the confidentiality of information shared by the students and staff, whilst maintaining an awareness of statutory and moral obligations of Arcofytre child protection policies Report any concerns relating to your mentee in keeping with agreed policies and procedures Act as an ambassador for Arcofyre Work closely and communicating regularly with program staff through phone contact, personal conferences and group meetings, and take constructive feedback regarding volunteering activities Advise the Critical Outreach Manager when you are unwell and/or unable to cotinue in your role.
