25.01.2022 Debunking the myth that venting helps in overcoming anger. Although suppressing negative emotions such as anger is not a solution, venting in fact does not help you get it out of your system in the way that is sometimes portrayed. Venting can positively reinforce the initial triggered feelings. This leads to a sustained or prolonged feeling of a negative emotion and can even amplify it! A better way of dealing with anger is to channel these feelings into a productive outlet, ...such as exercise or artistic pursuits. #mentalhealthsydney #resilience

22.01.2022 A beautiful quote by @hannahdblum on Instagram! A large aspect of our battle against mental health is acceptance. And part of that acceptance is wearing our negative experiences as armour. It may seem a cliché, but have a think today about how some of your experiences have helped you, not hindered you. You may be surprised. #resilience #mentalhealth

20.01.2022 Do opposites really attract? Research suggests not! It seems that scientifically, we are actually more drawn to partners who are more similar to us. This is due to the fact that some similarities allow a broader sense of understanding and leads us to agree with our partners and share the same style of communication, which is a precursor for long term success when it comes to matters of the heart. #relationshiptherapy #relationshipadvice

09.01.2022 How do you know when your child needs professional help? When children have emotional or behavioural problems, it is hard to know whether they really need help, and as parents, you dont want to be wasting time and money on unnecessary treatment. With issues such as eating disorders and self-harm, or if your family has a strong history of mental health, it is important not to wait and likely your child needs help immediately. Additionally, if your child has been suffering fr...om emotional and behavioural issues for long periods of time, we recommend speaking to a psychologist to see how they can help. When to wait: when faced with life events such as parental divorce, changing schools and new siblings, children are often troubled, but often this passes over time. However if these feelings are not passing after a month or two, we also recommend seeking help. Armchair offers a range of child and family services, so if you are concerned about your childs mental health, do not hesitate to give us a call to see how we can help. #childtherapy #childrensmentalhealth

09.01.2022 Were in the depths of 2020s winter, and after what may have been a tumultuous start to the year, it may be even harder for those of us struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is characterised by a seasonal pattern, where you may feel fine in the warmer months but become increasingly unmotivated when the cold sets in. Just like with depression, lacking energy, feeling hopeless and losing interest in things which would usually bring pleasure are all tell-tale ...signs of the disorder. Although the cause of SAD is still inconclusive, a lot of medical practitioners believe that it is related to a lack of sunlight which affects hormones such as Serotonin and Melatonin, and their production. If you are feeling a bit under the weather speak to close friends and family, or reach out to a professional who will be better equipped to assert whether the winter blues may in fact be something more. #anxiety #anxietyhelp

I quite often dont feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either. But goodness, continued Piglet, Difficult Days are so much easier when you know youve got someone there for you. 06.01.2022 How do you maintain a quiet space in a chatty office? What can you do when your colleagues are so chatty to the point of distracting you from what you need to get done? Instead of stipulating a particular hour during the day to keep social discussion down, Amanda Gordon recommends a general change in the culture, encouraging people to ignore distractions in several different ways.... "It [could be] acceptable for people to not respond to emails immediately they receive them. Perhaps they may close the door or put a 'do not disturb' sign up. Maybe people need to take responsibility and alert their team members that they are not available during certain hours because they need some uninterrupted time to do whatever task is at hand. "The key to a healthy working environment is that everyone is able to communicate their needs. Usually solutions such as the above can be found, and that can be without anyone feeling compelled to keep their mouths shut." 05.01.2022 Ask Amanda: They say to combat anxiety we should face our fears. But will pushing ourselves too far make it worse? Whats the best way to overcome our fears? Amanda: It often depends on you, your anxiety, and what is bringing it to the surface. There are certainly some occasions where it is important to feel your fear and face the thing that scares you the most. It could be going on a date when you arent sure whether you like them, applying for that job youve been dreamin...g about, but believe you arent qualified enough for. Youll be amazed at how awesome it feels to finally do the thing thats been biting at your nerves for so long. At the same time, if you suffer from high level anxiety, it isnt a good idea to leap into things without preparation, leading to panic and even greater anxiety. Facing your fear involves rehearsal and anxiety tackling strategies at the ready. The goal here is to manage your fears rather than overcoming them. Its a great idea to make an assessment about the activity, how prepared you feel and how you might cope with anxiety. Contact Amanda today to discuss more anxiety tackling strategies and how you can learn to healthily face your fears. #anxietytips #faceyourfears
