13.01.2022 Thursday meeting speaker: We had very enjoyable presentation from our new member Kerry Myers on his career in journalism, delivered at very short notice after the withdrawal of our organised speaker due to illness. Many references to Kerry's work interactions with Derryn Hinch and he did say, in response to a question, that 'he and Derryn both had each other's numbers!' Make of that what you will! - John Jones (2019/2021 President) --------------------------------------------...---- " Initially as a copy boy who made cups of tea, ran errands, and listened to police and ambulance radio to alert real journalists to breaking news stories. After becoming a ‘real journalist’ himself, he moved to Fairfax for whom he went to New York at the time of Watergate and much other important news. New York was a real eye-opener. He met Cary Grant. He was also thrown out of an Irish bar at 3:00 am because his companion, one Derryn Hinch, got involved in a heated argument with the publican about Nixon being a crook. He then went to Antarctica for three months at Davis Station, back in Sydney he was the Chief of Staff at The Sun. When The Sun folded in 1988 he moved into television journalism as assistant producer of a current affairs program headed by none other than Derryn Hinch, a figure who seems to have haunted Kerry for much of his working life. Another three years later he re-joined Fairfax in charge of community newspapers across the state. This was followed by a spell at the Sydney Morning Herald as Letters Editor. Then came the tree change, as he put it, moving to Orange for four years a town he later found easy to leave when he returned to Sydney to edit the Catholic Weekly. Finally, after a period as News Editor for AAP, he retired and moved to Armidale. He concluded with the observation that journalism was bloody hard yakka but also lots of fun. Kerry was warmly thanked for his concise and very amusing life history by Andrew (2021/2022 president elect), who noted that there had not been as much hearty laughter heard at a meeting of our Club for a very long time." - condensed excerp from newsletter written by member: Jeremy Smith #armidalecentralrotaryclub #armidale #armidalensw

12.01.2022 Club Sponsorship: Elian Cotter gave our club an update on her National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) experience and we wish her well at the District Semi-finals which take place at Quirindi on 28th February! " Elian spoke about her experiences at NYSF. Instead of the usual intensive one week in residence in Canberra, a more drawn-out program spanning three weeks took place over Zoom, with the late addition of a visit to see laboratories at Newcastle. Elian spoke enthusiasticall...y about hearing lectures and discussions over Zoom by Nobel prize winners in Canberra and even having a tour of the particle accelerator CERN in Switzerland. In Newcastle, at the university labs she had hands-on experiments involving DNA, liquid nitrogen, and many other eye-opening science topics. Space engineering and medicine she found particularly interesting, and she even discovered that physics, a hitherto-neglected area of study, held considerable appeal. Participants also indulged remotely in social activities, and she now has good friends in several different part of Australia as a result. She thanked the Club for their sponsorship and said the whole experience had been very valuable as well as enjoyable. It had given her a much clearer idea of her future in science, and even allowed her to find the university of her choice - the University of Queensland in Brisbane where she hopes to pursue a biomedical degree leading towards postgraduate medical studies. Elian was thanked by Vern, who congratulated her not only on her presentation, but also in so enthusiastically finding her way forward into a science career in contrast to so many students he had spoken with recently, who seem to have little idea at all of their future."
