24.01.2022 The Battle of Milne Bay was the Allies’ first defeat of Japanese forces on land during the Second World War. 1942 stands as one of the most significant years in Australia’s wartime history. As Australians fought in defence of our shores, there were major battles in Papua: along the Kokoda Track, at Milne Bay and at the Beacheads of Buna, Gona and, in early 1943, Sanananda. On the night of 2526 August 1942, a Japanese amphibious invasion force landed on the northern shore of ...Milne Bay at the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea. The aim was to secure a base from which to provide air and naval support for the overland attempt to take Port Moresby. The Japanese landing was opposed by Kittyhawk fighters of 75 and 76 Squadrons RAAF. For the next two days the Japanese, with tank support, gradually advanced towards the airstrips situated in the lowlands at the head of the bay. As they moved forward, the enemy soldiers were constantly harassed by the RAAF aircraft. The Battle of Milne Bay was hailed at the time as the first significant defeat of a Japanese force on land in the Second World War and an important morale booster for the Allies. https://hubs.ly/H0tYz0C0 #VP #VJ #Victory #Pacific #Army #WW2 #WWII #war #secondwoldwar #historynerd #historic #military #collection #history #ww #soldier #militarylife #veteran #war #armedforces #OurVeterans #TYFYS #veteran #DiggersTribute #diggers #veterandiggers #RAAF #Airfroce

18.01.2022 Pictured are just one section of two regiments of Australian Light Horse that on the 31st of October 1917, braved shell and machine-gun fire to gallop over 3 miles of open plain, and with bayonets drawn, charge the Turkish stronghold of Beersheba. The men and horses were ravenously thirsty, the horses having had no water for nearly 60 hours, which gave an urgency to the attack, for once the horses smelled water there was no stopping them. TheTurks overwhelmed by the speed and ...sheer audacity of the attack, failed to lower their gun-sights quickly enough, enabling the light horse regiments to gallop beneath their fire. Within an hour Beersheba was won, and most of the precious wells were saved. This victory was strategically important as it opened the way to the taking of Palestine and Jerusalem, thus changing the course of history in the Middle East. Of the 800 men and horses involved in this charge, 44 horses were killed, 32 horsemen died and 36 were injured. 11.01.2022 We don't know them all, but we owe them all. After 6 years, the war finally ended when Japan surrendered in August 1945. Australian ships had played a role in the push towards the Philippines and the Japanese home islands. Australian aircrew had fought in the air war over Germany while Australian infantry had continued mopping up campaigns in Borneo, New Britain, New Guinea, and on Bougainville. These men, and many more like them, are the contributing factors to the lives we ...lead today. They made sacrifice for people that they never met, and would never know. 08.01.2022 Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said Legacy Week was known for its trademark badges and was a simple way that Australians can support our ex-service personnel and their families, and say ‘thank you’. Every year since 1942, Legacy volunteers have fundraised across Australia for the families of veterans who stand by our service men and women both during and after their service, Mr Chester said. This year has been unprecedented in so many ways, and the coronavir...us crisis has heightened many of the pressures that our veterans and their families are experiencing. That is why it is more important than ever that we all do what we can to help organisations like Legacy support the families of veterans and I encourage Australians to consider buying a badge or supporting Legacy online. 02.01.2022 The Malayan Emergency was declared on 18 June 1948. Australia's involvement in the Emergency began in 1950 with the arrival of RAAF aircraft and personnel in Singapore. Dakotas from 38 Squadron and six Lincoln bombers of 1 Squadron provided the backbone of air operations. In October 1955, the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), arrived in Penang; they were replaced by 3 RAR in October 1957. 3 RAR left Malaya in October 1959 to be replaced by 1 RAR. The Malayan ...government officially declared the Emergency over on 31 July 1960 however 1 RAR remained in Malaya until October the following year, when 2 RAR returned for a second tour. In August 1962 the battalion was committed to anti-communist operations in Perlis and Kedah, completing its tour in August 1963. In addition to air and infantry forces, Australia also provided artillery and engineering support, and an airfield construction squadron built the main runway for the air force base at Butterworth. RAN ships also served in the Malayan Emergency. Lasting 13 years, the Malayan Emergency was the longest continuous military commitment in Australia's history. Thirty-nine Australian servicemen were killed in Malaya and 27 were wounded. https://hubs.ly/H0vgVcd0 #OurVeterans #TYFYS #veteran #DiggersTribute #diggers #veterandiggers #veterans #military #army #navy #airforce
