25.01.2022 SIGNAL is the City of Melbourne’s creative arts studio for young people aged 13 to 25. Their program is packed full of visual arts, film, sound, new media, music and theatre workshops and opportunities to create and present new work. Their workshops give you the chance to try out lots of different artforms, use industry materials and work alongside professional artists. Each year, Signal commissions artists aged 16 to 25 to create new works for the Signal Screen and Sound Wal...k. They have recently launched twelve new screen and sound works by young and emerging artists which are now live on the new Digital SIGNAL website. Throughout the twelve week Screen X Sound Commissions program, each young artist developed a solo screen or sound work and collaborated with another commissioned artist to create a second audio visual piece. Check them out on the link below! https://digitalsignal.net.au/screen-x-sound/

23.01.2022 Weve held off posting for a while we had plans to write up a big ol things we achieved in 2019 but the fires in Australia have been truly brutal for so many people and we havent been quite able to put words together to express our grief. We know that the crisis continues for many communities and were sending all our love and hoping for gentler times soon. Weve been trying to figure out what we can do and where our strength lies. What we keep coming back to is the need ...for connection, communication and support in these times the need for community and grassroots action. So thats what were going to focus on this year, continuing to make space for people in our community to connect, communicate, create and be inspired. We want to continue to support local young people to have a growing sense of agency, where they can have an idea or see something that needs to change and they can build the support around themselves to make big things happen. In the meantime theres a lot to celebrate in our neck of the woods, well get to that soon, so excited to get back to work. Big love from Asking for Trouble Physical Theatre/Art Attack

22.01.2022 We've been describing the film process we've just begun as a collaborative moving collage, right now we're at the gathering/bowerbird stage, this will be familiar to most of the participants who have created work with Asking for Trouble before. We ask - what have we got as a group? What skills? Ideas for images? Ideas of locations to film? Does anyone have a dance routine (or desire to learn one)? Who can ride a unicycle or a horse? Who plays music? Who has excellent skills o...n a scooter or skateboard? Tell us all the things you want to capture on film! Another thing we are gathering is text, for those who enjoy writing/songwriting we'd LOVE to hear from you. Here is a free workshop through Signal you could potentially use to develop some writing for the films, if you have existing material (or anything else) you would like to throw into the mix please get in touch! 'Free online poetry series with Soreti Kadir Wednesdays at 5pm from 7 to 28 October Discover your writer’s voice, story, purpose and heart in this four week series, with poet Soreti Kadir. Whether you’re new to poetry or want to hone your skills, this workshop will offer guidance and inspiration. Use writing exercises, reflection and resources to build your skills and techniques. Receive feedback on your work and hear from guest artists such as Zeynab Seyd and Sukina Pilgirm. Gain confidence in performing your poetry or having it performed, and experiment with form and voice. This is a four week series, you must come to each session. Register now. ' https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au//whats-/Pages/poetry.aspx
22.01.2022 EDIT - I had thought this post was referring to paid positions, it sounds like it's actually an opportunity for professional development/upskilling. 22.01.2022 For those keen to get making sculptures this free workshop is worth checking out! Artist: Claudia Nicholson Over two days, you will be supported to build and decorate your own sculptures inspired by artist Claudia Nicholsons practice and her interest in pre-Columbian figurative sculptures and counterfeit items. Using recycled materials, air dry clay, and acrylic paint, you will have a chance to create new work in a collaborative online environment.... Signal will send you clay and paint. Youll just need to gather a few recycled materials from around your place, a rolling pin or bottle, a board to build on (cardboard box is fine), and a butter knife from your kitchen. 20.01.2022 Whats Happening With Circus?!? Hey Team, We have had a few people beginning to ask whats happening with Circus.... Our plan at this stage is to start up the Tuesday Teen class (13 -25s) at the beginning of Term 3 (exact date to be advised) and to start the Primary class and the Womens Class in term 4. Staggering the starting of classes in this way will ensure we can effectively implement the safety measures we need to keep everyone safe. On Tuesday we participated in the COVID-19 training at Clunes Neighbourhood House as part of our plan and will continue to monitor the situation in the following weeks with schools and other activities reopening and will assess closer to the beginning of term 3 if indeed we can safely start up again. We hope to let you all know by the middle of the school holidays. In the meantime We are launching Cooped Up Hoops! With thanks to Hepburn Shire Council. WANT TO LEARN TO HOOP? Weve organised for Clunes residents to learn from hoop extraordinaire Hayley Hoopla in the safety of your own homes for a whole month - For FREE!!!! Dont have a hoop? Dont Worry!!! We will have hoop making materials available for you with instructions on building your own hoop to keep! Follow this link for more details and to register and well be in contact with more details soon. https://coopeduphoops.eventbrite.com.au We miss you all and look forward to seeing your smiling faces again soon! Please feel free to contact us about Circus or other Art Attack related stuff. Christy has a new Art Attack number which is 0484 769 320
20.01.2022 Hi everyone! Weve made a decision to cancel all circus classes on today 13th March and Tuesday 17th March as well as cancelling our attendance at both Talbot and Creswick markets over the next 2 weekends. Art Attack youth circus artists were due to facilitate workshops and deliver a short performance, however in consultation with Clunes Neighbourhood House weve identified that due to the physical nature of these workshops (and circus as an artform) we couldnt address the p...otential risk of transmission of COVID-19 if carriers were attending the market. It simply isnt possible to clean and sanitise all our equipment between each user (even if we could justify spending our funding on cleaning mats and hula hoops you might have noticed theres a little bit of a shortage of hand sanitiser as the moment!) and while government reccommendations are currently to continue as normal with basic hygiene we are aware that there are many people in our community who already struggle to access healthcare and we want to do everything we can to avoid contributing to an already overburdened health system. It is likely that we will not begin classes again until after the school holidays but we will make this call on Wednesday 18th March. This feels like the most responsible decision we could make, were gutted and will miss your faces but we hope you understand, wed rather be safe than sorry. We are going ahead with the playwriting workshop with Emily Sheehan this weekend as we feel confident we can make that a safe space for facilitators and participants.
20.01.2022 Turns out outdoor training is really great for skipping! We've had a few rolls/cartwheels into the ropes and we've been working on mastering the art of double dutch too. 20.01.2022 Flashback Friday - Brainnnnnssss... In 2018 we did a call out to any local young people (11-25) who wanted to be a part of a brainstorm, shaping what Art Attack would become - we had close to 50 young people participate in this planning stage (!!!) We had conversations about different art forms visual art, writing, dance, performance, street art, music and school bands. We heard about skate parks, what was tricky about being a young adult in Clunes, we talked about footy a...nd netball, about the connections they had to particular spaces, where they did and didnt feel welcome. We asked what theyd like to see change in their community and they told us how theyd like to contribute to that vision. We wanted to explore a truly co-designed community project that didnt make assumptions about what was wanted or needed but that collaborated with and responded to the opportunities that presented, its been a massive exercise in trust and flexibility. Given the current situation we all find ourselves in, weve been checking in and listening to where our previous participants are at now What has changed? What is the same? How are their hearts? And what do they think we should do next? If you are (or you know) a young person in Clunes who hasnt been involved with Art Attack yet but might be keen to be a part of the conversation let us know, wed love to hear from you. 19.01.2022 On our daily bike rides during ISO weve been passing Clunes swimming pool and every time we see the Art Attack Mural it makes us smile. One story that came up multiple times as part of our Brainstorming sessions was a feeling of sadness about a mural which had been created by a local youth group a few years earlier and unfortunately had to be painted over only a short time after it had been finished. We asked whether people would be interested in working with a street artis...t to create another mural (one which could be portable and so could move if necessary). As a way to extend the conversation to the whole of Clunes community we hosted award winning street artist Katie Kaff Eine who with Christy Louise Flaws ran a series of free drawing workshops in Collins place where everyone was welcome to take part in dreaming up a Clunes Utopia. Awesomely Hepburn Shire Council were looking for some art to be displayed at the local pool and we helped organised to get Kaff over to Trentham too! There were money trees, people trading produce for tickets to shows, rollercoasters and spaces to skate, people felt safe and were happy, their heads were exploding with new ideas also there was icecream, pizza and ocelots(!?!). Lots of the gorgeous drawings were incorporated directly into the Mural at the pool, take a closer look next summer! Weve had a number of young people keen to create another public art piece watch this space! 19.01.2022 Hi everyone, weve got an update email for all keen circus crew on its way in the next couple days but didnt want you to miss out on a juggling session with Simon tomorrow!
19.01.2022 So behind the scenes of Art Attack there are a whole lot of indie artists who continue to generously supported us, offering advice, lending us crashmats, offering tickets to shows and helping us brainstorm ways to connect this project into the wider arts ecology - masterclasses, festivals and artist residencies that will continue after the official Art Attack project finishes up. One of those artists is Karen who generously lent us a whole lot of juggling equipment before she left for Mexico, we were thinking of her today and wanted to introduce you all to her, hopefully we can bring Karen to Clunes one day in the future! https://www.facebook.com/karen.ee.75/posts/10157116206405780

17.01.2022 While were still thinking about the pool we thought it might be nice to do a re-share of one of the projects which led to Art Attacks ongoing circus program. Over a couple of summers 2017/2018 local young people worked on a project with Asking for Trouble Physical Theatre Rebecca H Russell and Ken Evans to create a site specific work in and around the local swimming pool full of physicality but also the stories of the local Hepburn community pools. This work began as a smal...l 3 day intensive training project supported by Clunes Neighbourhood House and Hepburn Shire Council and then the following year a grant from Regional Arts Australia led to an extended training project and performance which was toured to Trentham and then to Newstead as part of the Regional Centre for Culture 2018. As artists who had regularly run fly in fly out community projects prior to moving to Clunes what we have loved about working within our own community is the time and connections that allow for small conversations to evolve and develop... from little things big things grow. Were not sure what projects will emerge from this time apart, but we know they will and theyll be bloody great. 14.01.2022 Happy Halloween and ART ATTACK - The wrap up As many of you know Art Attack was due to wrap up around the middle of 2020, thanks to Creative Victoria we were able to pause and we are now in the public Outcome phase of the project. While we had hoped to be able to do a combination of short film and live performance outcomes, due to COVID we are instead creating a short film bonanza! ... We have been working with a number of young people over the past couple months to create a series of films which will be shared in Clunes, online and in Melbourne. We are also planning to develop a magazine to reflect on all the various projects which have been a part of Art Attack as well as showcase local young writers and artists. While we have been creating these films with a core crew of young artist collaborators there is still an opportunity for other local youth (12-25) to get involved in the following. This weekend and Tuesday 3rd Nov MOVEMENT - a short film exploring all the ways we move, from bicycle, running, swimming, walking, skate and parkour - this piece involves participants receiving a free black hoodie (that they get to keep) as a costume and being part of a group arrival scene in Collins Place which will be filmed by a drone. We will continue to work in small groups and keep distance to allow us to abide by all current Covid restrictions with support from Clunes Neighbourhood House. Participants can also choose to be filmed at the upcoming Parkour workshops this Sunday - Luke and Christy will both be in attendance. Details on both here - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/asking-for-trouble-26077172 CIRCUS spectacular filming - an opportunity to capture the skills our circus crew have been developing over the past two year, from stiltwalking, acrobatics, mini tramp, juggling and more.If you have been involved in circus previously (even if you haven’t attended in a while) and would like to showcase a skill in this film please get in touch with us ASAP. There are a couple other films being created which you’ll have to wait to see however here’s the awesome ZOMBIE film we created at Clunes Town Hall last year for you to check out in the meantime. While we do intend to run community projects in Clunes in the future, over the next few weeks we will be offering the last opportunities to get involved in Art Attack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVZF7d1smSw

10.01.2022 Hey Clunes young folk, have you got an idea of what you want to explore next? What would be helpful? What would be fun? Lets co-design a new way of working tog...ether during these strange times. Art Attack is best known for its circus work - but weve been responding to requests for workshops and education in a whole range of artforms for some time. At the start of this year one local young person approached us and said they wanted to learn weaving. And it was our pleasure to set them up with a private workshop with incredible local artist Prue Simmons Dyeing To Weave . Check out the photos of the beautiful work they created together. And now - have a think if theres something special YOU want to learn and then send us a message. It could be for materials, or theres a particular artist you want to connect with, or maybe theres a creative online course, or youre just looking for inspiration. Get in touch!
