In a precautionary measure that considers the current public health situation, our showrooms in both Sydney and Melbourne will be closed to the public until further notice. We understand there will be some difficult times ahead and want to reassure that Artbank will continue to support our artists and industry. As we practise social distancing, we encoura...ge our community to enjoy our collection of over 10,000 artworks online, along with a bunch of artist interviews, videos and exciting digital content. We are currently undertaking a huge website development project which will allow us to get even more arts content to our audience. Watch this space for even more Artbank! New website is coming soon. 22.01.2022 Artbank has always relied on its community of supporters. From Graham Sturgeon's spirited founding leadership, Artbank has seen itself on the coal face of the arts in Australia. As both an artist support program and as a leasing outfit we have sought out a wide spectrum of collaborators and friends from the outset. As part of our 40th anniversary year we spoke to a few of the people who helped shape Artbank into the program it is today. Lindy Lee was first acquired by Artban...k in 1991 and her artworks remain some of the most important and celebrated works in the collection including being loaned for 'Lindy Lee: Moon in a Dew Drop,' a major survey exhibition @mca_australia We spoke to her about her practice and what it meant to be in the Artbank Collection. This question of 'split-ness' is also an intrinsic part of the Australian psyche. The essence of Australian society is multiracial and culturally diverse. Having work like mine in the collection means that Artbank recognises the importance of presenting this diversity. Artbank needs to be 'broad and eccentric' otherwise it would be a very hollow group of works." . . . . . 22.01.2022 Nancy Nyanjilpayi Chapman works alongside her sisters at Martumili Artists, located in the East Pilbura. Chapman depicts the Kalaru (samphire), an edible native succulent whose black seeds can be ground to create flour and made into damper. In this work on paper, Chapman utilises the softness and fluidness of the gouache material to create a loose interpretation of the arla (salt lakes) and lyinji (clay pans) where the Kalaru grows. . . . .... 08.01.2022 Artbank have loaned a very special video work by artist Katthy Cavaliere (1972-2012) to the @nationalgalleryaus for the wonderful ‘Know My Name’ exhibition on now! The longing for a sense of home in the face of displacement was a recurring theme in Katthy Cavaliere's multidisciplinary work. All the symbolic or literal imagery of the home that characterised her overall practice was distilled in this, one of her final works, through the 'nest' created from her late mother's clo...thes. Shot on Super 8 film, nest depicts the artist forming the mound of clothing at Clovelly Beach in Sydney before sitting naked, in the nest, and facing off against the ocean from a rocky cliff. . . . . . . 02.01.2022 Saturday August 8, 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of Artbank, one of the largest and most diverse collections of contemporary Australian art in the world. The Australian Government founded Artbank in 1980 to support living Australian artists through the acquisition of their work, and to promote the value of Australian contemporary art to the broader public through a public leasing program. We take this opportunity to thank the many gallerists, clients, staff and most of all ...artists, who have helped Artbank to build this unique national collection over the last forty years. We look forward to 40 more years of supporting Australian contemporary art! Big thanks to everyone who sent in their messages we will be sharing the longer videos on our website and social media in the coming weeks! Keep sending them in!
