24.01.2022 A common disincentive to flying has been the concern about contracting COVID-19. Here is the best explanation we've seen so far on why, whilst it is possible, aircraft generally have much better airflow than similar spaces. Let's support the aviation industry and get back to safe flying. #safety #aviation https://www.linkedin.com//heico-aerospace_covid19-activity

22.01.2022 Here is something amazing to watch while in isolation! ‘The Final Passage’ is free to view online from TODAY for the first time. This is a stunning cinematic j...ourney through the painted cave of Chauvet in the Ardèche, southern France, which dates to 36,000 years ago. The film was directed by Pascal Magontier and Producer Martin Marquet; and the English version is narrated by Marianne Faithfull. The original cave is only open to scientific researchers for a limited time every year; and the stunning replica of Chauvet, created by the site's scientific team - is otherwise the only way to see this extraordinary human masterpiece. Watch this! It is truly stunning! https://www.missingmatter.info/tara-expo #RockArtForAll http://www.bradshawfoundation.com/rockartnetwork/ See more

21.01.2022 Before the invention and use of toothpaste tubes in the late 1890s, toothpaste was generally far more pasty and less runny than it is now. It was usually sold in small ceramic jars with lids that often advertised the quality of their contents. These jars were generally around 7 to 8 centimetres in diameter. This Jar is far smaller at only 3 centimetres diameter. It might have been a promotional item or possibly a pocket sized item for travel and use away from home. It is a...lso unusual in being monochrome. Most of these jar lids were multicoloured The toothpaste was cherry flavoured which isnt frequent nowadays. The text on the jar claims that this toothpaste was patronized by the Queen (Victoria), however we cannot necessarily take this literally. Before advertising laws were strengthened, many British companies made claims to be associated with the British Royal Family. British crockery manufacturers of the 19th century frequently printed the Royal coat of arms on the base of their crockery without any licenced Royal connection at all. Nevertheless the claimed Royal connection does tell us that the perception of royalty at the time was one that people likely associated with quality and integrity. This item likely dates from 1854 to 1898. #FridayFinds #FindsFriday #artefact #toothpastelid

21.01.2022 Artefact recently completed a series of 6 interpretive panels from development through to production for Lansdowne Bridge in Goulburn. Four of the panels are located on one side of the bridge regarding the landscape and nearby heritage items; while the other two are on the other side of the bridge and relate to the Aboriginal heritage of the area and the original 1902 bridge, now demolished. These Heritage Interpretation panels were produced in consultation with Pejar Local ...Aboriginal Land Council and the local historical society. The supports for each panel are made from timber salvaged from the original bridge and the new replacement bridge opened on the 27th August 2019, with dual names; one of which is in honour of a local Aboriginal elder, Harold E (Boodge) Freeman, whom passed in 2002, one of the panels in the series is dedicated in his memory with permission from his family. 13.01.2022 A codd bottle recovered from the remains of a railway workshop. As is common with codd bottles the top has broken off and the marble is missing. Bronger Bros (E. W. and R. J.) was a cordial manufacturing firm which operated from 1890-1926 on Belmore Street in Penrith. Their trademark featured a pair of shaking hands, possibly a play on the word cordial. #FridayFind #FindsFriday #coddbottle #Penrith #theRith #missingyourmarble

11.01.2022 Last week Artefact Heritage launched its latest heritage interpretation project - The Store Oral History project - developed jointly with the University of Newcastle Living Histories digitisation lab. The project brings to life The Store through memories and stories from members of the Newcastle community. The biggest co-operative society in Australia, was established in 1906 in Hunter Street Newcastle and had 15 other retail branches. Providing an amazing array of service ...and products, the Store was a Newcastle icon. Eventually closing in 1981, and the old building was demolished in 2018 to make way for the new Newcastle Bus Interchange and commercial/residential developments. The Oral History Project commemorates the Stores legacy, with over 20 video interviews, hundreds of images, articles, audios and memorabilia about The Store available to the community on this on-line platform. What a great project, and a wonderful heritage outcome! Visit The Store Oral History Project at www.newcastle.edu.au/thestore

06.01.2022 Dear Australian Archaeology Colleagues, Like all of you Im sure Ive been deeply moved by the extent and violence of the current bushfire season. Ive also been thinking seriously about what I (we) can do. What Ive decided to try to do is to organise a network of archaeologists and heritage specialists to respond to bushfire affected communities to help manage the effects of what is likely to be an ongoing process of large-scale transformation of the landscape. I dont kno...w exactly what this will look like in practice yet but I know it will take a lot of us offering a collective pool of expertise and abilities to make it work. At this point its really just an idea, and what Im asking for is people to sign up if youre interested in possibly volunteering in some capacity. Its possible that this initiative will be both reactive and proactive. I dont want this to be perceived by anyone as proposing a free replacement for heritage consulting or research. Its to try to put together a collective to respond to the kinds of above and beyond issues that will likely emerge as communities face longer and more intense fire seasons. I also dont see this as supplanting any potential action by AAA, ASHA, etc. Rather, we might all leverage our connections to the bigger professional associations, as well as other networks and institutions, from TOs to councils, to support whatever kinds of initiatives we end up working on. The main idea is to go beyond just talking about how we can help and to bring about real action that helps areas that are going to continue to be impacted by the new and apparently ongoing worsening bushfire regime. If youre interested, send an email to [email protected] and Ill get in touch with more information. Please feel free to share widely among your own networks. Sincerely, James Flexner #Indigenousarchaeologicalheritage #historicalarchaeologicalheritage #australianbushfires #bushfirearchaeologists

02.01.2022 A fragment of a Bristol glaze stoneware Tooheys Limited bottle recovered from south-east Sydney. The first Tooheys was released in 1869 and Tooheys Limited became a public company in 1902 after which this bottle was released. The stag has been an icon of the company since the Standard Brewery was first established on Elizabeth Street in 1873 and may have been inspired by the Bald Faced Stag, John Tooheys regular haunt.
