18.01.2022 I want to talk about a few things that might be just a tad BORING but are also more than a tad IMPORTANT . What sort of insurance do you have? Do you have a current Working With Children Check and Police Check? Will you provide a tax invoice? Market research (conducted by yours truly) indicates that the overwhelming majority of cleaners advertising their services amongst the tumultuous hoards of buy/swap/sell groups are not sole traders, businesses or companies. Here’s t...hree important things that you should ask your current or prospective cleaner. 1: What sort of insurance do you have? If the answer is none, then you should very seriously consider who is going to pay for your family home to be repaired (or, heaven forbid - rebuilt) in the event of an accident. Now I know that this might sound extreme. But I kid you not - I once worked with a person who left the sink running (with the plug in) and then got distracted by a phone call. By the time they realised their mistake, three carpeted rooms had to be ripped up due to water damage. And I won’t mention all of the other damage that occurred. Furniture. Skirting boards. You name it. Daft? Sure. But not totally improbable. This is why Public Liability and Products Insurance is so important. Whilst on the subject of insurance - Did you know that you could very well be responsible for any personal injury that might occur whilst cleaning? Well, only if they don’t have WorkCover Insurance. 2: Do you have a current Working With Children Check and Police Check? If they say yes, don’t be afraid to ask to see it. If the answer is no, then who knows if they have been involved in crime in the past. But hey, what’s a bit of petty theft between you and me? Inviting a stranger into your home, to clean your kids’ rooms and potentially be alone whilst you’re not home is a big deal. So at the very least, please, please, please ask to see your cleaner’s current Working With Children Check and Police Check. 3: Will you provide a tax invoice? If they say yes - great! At least that counts for some semblance of legitimacy. If they say no - you might be thinking ‘ripper, cash jobs equal savings’. But did you also know that off-the-books cash jobs equals no insurance? See question 1 above. If they’re willing to break the rules when it comes to paying tax - what other rules are they willing to break?

For most of us, it’s as simple as locking out a few hours one morning in the very near future to go give it the old once-over and then we’re right back on track.
