24.01.2022 Our Gallery shop specialises in products created by local makers, and for our #NAIDOCWeek gallery we’re sharing with you some of our products by Indigenous creators. The clock is by Ballarat’s own #PitchaMakinFellas, one of a series they have made called Blackfella Time it’s typical of the playful but provocative way they create work that challenges assumptions about Aboriginal people. The scarf is the design Koonawarra the Swan by Ballarat-based Dea & Lea (#wadawurrungarti...st #DeanneGilson working with designer #leaoldjohn). The earrings are from #TheKoorieCircle, based in Northcote, who produce quality unique handmade Aboriginal designed jewellery, with $1 from the sale of all jewellery donated to the Family Violence Legal Prevention Service Sister's Day Out Program. All products available from the Gallery Shop. 23.01.2022 Our education team have been creating some great resources for kids, with activities that can be done at home or at school, inspired by artworks in our collection. Here's one inspired by Donna Marcus' 2001 aluminium teapot sculpture, Teamwork 2, which is part of our new staircase hang - you'll be able to see it when we reopen. Create a collaborative wall pattern using shapes inspired by Donna Marcus’ wall sculpture Teamwork 2. Work as a team with a family member, friend or classmate to create your artwork. 21.01.2022 The collaborative exhibition The golden pantomime by artists Madeleine Cruise and Ruby Pilven opened just before the Gallery's temporary closure so only a few lucky people have seen it so far. Here's a brief taster of the show, which is a bold and vibrant celebration of domestic spaces and the rituals of everyday life featuring paintings, prints and ceramics produced individually and in response to each other’s work.

20.01.2022 An online conversation between social researcher and writer Hugh Mackay AO and Lynne Reeder of Compassionate Ballarat, presented by the Art Gallery on Monday 7 September 2020. In this Q&A, Hugh Mackay discusses his two new books which apporach the topic of coming to terms with the authentic self in a non-fiction book, The inner self, and a novel The question of love.

20.01.2022 Of all of Trent Parke’s photographs of trees in Ballarat’s #AvenueofHonour, this one is perhaps the most poignant - and there’s no tree in sight! In preparing to take photographs of the trees, Parke read the tragic story of Private Everett Rickard of the 22nd Battalion. Rickard was just 19 years old when he enlisted. He was a bank clerk and the son of a grocer living in Ripon Street, Ballarat. He had three sisters but he was his parent’s only surviving son their first son h...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Next in our #NAIDOCWeek gallery is this beautiful earthenware vessel by one of Australia’s most significant contemporary Indigenous artists Pepai Jangala Carroll, which we have just acquired for our collection. This work relates to #Walungurru (#Kintore) in the #Luritja #Pintupi Country of Carroll’s grandmother and father. Carroll had not visited Walungurru since childhood, having spent most of his life at #Ernabella in his mother’s #Pitjantjatjara country. In 2017, he made a... trip to his father’s country, a journey of re-discovery that has resulted in a body of work that is profound and sensitive. Carroll has just been announced by the Adelaide Jam Factory as the #JamFactoryIcon for 2021. Pepai Jangala Carroll, Walungurru VII, 2018. stoneware with sgraffito. Join Mackay in conversation with Lynne Reeder of Compassionate Ballarat, in an event presented by the Art Gallery of Ballarat and introduced by Gallery Director Louise Tegart.

17.01.2022 Today the #CityofBallarat announced a series of artist-led workshops as part of the #ContinuousVoices arts project, which aims to develop a public art memorial in Ballarat to acknowledge survivors of sexual assault. In 2021 the Art Gallery of Ballarat will present an exhibition of artworks created in response to the issue of sexual abuse. The artists leading the different projects are Paige Duggan, Geoff Hassall and George Williams (songwriting, spoken word); Rebecca Russell,... Dotan Caspi, Steph O’Hara and Silvana Izzo (drawing, animation, movement and multimedia installation); Robert House, Kaff-eine, Glenn Pearce and James Money (drawing and sculpture); Eliza-Jane Gilchrist (sculpture); and Michelle Dunn (photography). Artists representing the five projects gathered together in Alfred Deakin Place for the announcement. The workshops will help inspire the design for this special tribute. Four of the workshops are for survivors of sexual abuse, while members of the general community to participate in the fifth. All artists have been trained in Trauma Informed Principles and both artists and participants will be supported by the Centre Against Sexual Assault to create a safe space for participants throughout the delivery of the workshops. To find out more or to join a project, go to https://bit.ly/36zPrvZ The project is led by a community reference group and the City of Ballarat in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA), Beyond Empathy, Care Leavers Australasia Network and Loud Fence.

17.01.2022 As #NAIDOCWeek draws to a close, we’re sharing Aunty Marlene Gilson’s Black Swamp-Lake Wendouree. #LakeWendouree is the true spiritual heart of Ballarat. It was an important place for the #Wadawurrung people, the home of the Koonawarra the black swans, Bunjil’s wives, the spirit sisters. Gilson’s ancestors people would gather here for hunting, fishing and gathering food and would perform ceremonies at the corroboree ground on the southern side of the swamp. Marlene Gilson’s ...distinctive naïve paintings, generally alive with figures, of both Indigenous people and white settlers, show images of the past which place her ancestral people back into the picture. They are alive with action and theatrical detail, bringing the past alive in an engaging and inclusive way. Marlene Gilson, Black SwampLake Wendouree, 2018. synthetic polymer paint on linen. 13.01.2022 Over the last ten years, our #AdoptanArtwork program has transformed the look of our collection and here’s one of the latest works to come back from conservation - a painting of the grave of the poet #AdamLindsayGordon in #BrightonCemetery by noted painter #WBMcInnes. At one time Gordon was one of the most popular writers in Australia - he established the form of the #bushballad before #BanjoPaterson and #HenryLawson came along. He lived in Ballarat for a time, so it made se...nse for respected art historian Professor Ken Wach to give this painting to the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The conservation treatment has seen the discoloured varnish removed, abrasions repaired and new varnish applied so this painting can now take its place in our collection display. The conservation work was paid for by generous Gallery supporter Maria Ridsdale, one of many works she has helped us to care for. Thanks Ken and thanks Maria! 12.01.2022 Come into our shop from #LydiardStreet to do your #Christmasshopping and see this great image of students at the Gallery art school back in the 1890s. The Gallery’s own art school was one of the schools that grew into the #FederationUniversityAustralia #ArtsAcademy so we've reproduced it for #FedUni's 150th anniversary. This beautiful painting is a watercolour and can’t go on public display often but it’s one of the works at the heart of our historic collection. Herbert Henry... 10.01.2022 This is the last week of #MairinBriody’s exhibition #Signal in #BackspaceGallery. While the works have been on the walls since March, they haven’t been seen by as many people as they deserve and we wouldn't want you to miss them. A tribute to Ukrainian-French painter #SoniaDelaunay, these vibrant paintings are a compelling testimony to the powerful presence of #windturbines in our landscapes and increasingly in our imagination. 10.01.2022 Today for our #NAIDOCWeek gallery we have Goanna ground, designed by Ballarat-based #Gunditjmara artist Aunty Diana Nikkelson. When you come into the Gallery from tomorrow, make sure you take note of this amazing petroglyph. It was inspired by the artist’s totem and is a tribute to the first artists of the region, the #Wadawurrung people. It acknowledges Aboriginal survival and the dynamic regeneration of the Aboriginal art and culture in the region. The goanna was etched int...o the basalt paving at the back of the Gallery in 2006 as part of the cultural festival of the Commonwealth Games. Here are some images of the sandblasting process that etched the goanna into the bluestone paving. The goanna is approached along Police Lane by a series of etched footsteps, which evolve from human footprints to goanna prints as you walk. The goanna itself was originally an outdoor artwork, but half of it was brought into the Art Gallery of Ballarat when the former Federation Plaza was enclosed to form the Gallery’s McCain Annexe. The goanna is part of our #FederationUniversityAustralia 150th anniversary trail. 03.01.2022 Curator Julie McLaren interviewed Castlemaine artist David Frazer about his current exhibition 'Another night on earth' in late July. Frazer creates his own distinctive impressions of rural Australia with subtle humour and masterful skill as a storyteller. His endearing depictions of ‘hopeless blokes’ and ‘lonely losers’ illustrate human emotion at its most vulnerable. We look forward to welcoming visitors to see David's work when we are able to reopen. #artgalleryofballarat #AGBanywhere #bekindballarat #bekindbecreative #ballaratartist #loveballarat #visitballarat #artfromhome #bestofballarat #ballaratarts #museumfromhome #museumathome #closedbutopen #whyilovemuseums #PGAVgalleries #VicGalleriesFromHome #AustralianPublicGalleries #davidfrazer @david_frazer_art @australiangalleries
