25.01.2022 Condition Focus: Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis where your immune system mistakenly targets your own body. It especially affects the lining of the joints between your bones. Early symptoms include swelling, heat, tenderness, pain or stiffness in your joints. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can occur at any age and is the second most common form of arthritis, affecting 500,000 Australians. RA is not an ‘old person disease’ and affects as many people over the age of 65 as under 65. Learn more about the condition and how to manage it in our updated booklet here: https://www.arthritisnsw.org.au//Rheumatoid-Arthritis-Book

17.01.2022 "For nearly eight years I had begged innumerable GPs and specialists for help because I was in permanent, debilitating pain, as well experiencing erratic symptoms including fatigue, cognitive issues, tremors and mobility issues. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia, an incurable condition that means my nervous system malfunctions and sends incorrect signals to my brain. My pain psychologist recommended a series of management exercises, including pacing and meditation,... but I quickly returned to her with some bad news I couldn't meditate." Pain management comes in many forms, mindfulness and distraction being one of them. What helps you manage your pain?

16.01.2022 Did you see A Current Affair last night? It included a story about juvenile arthritis... yes kids get arthritis too and they are in much need of medical services that are currently lacking for the 6000 children in Australia with the condition. Australia, and in particular NSW, has below international standards (and other juvenile conditions) of specialist services available to them. Watch the story below. Thanks to JAFA https://www.jafa.org.au/ for campaigning for our JIA ki...ds. There is a lot of pain associated with the condition for these kids, they deserve better government funding for faster diagnosis and effective treatment.

13.01.2022 It’s a well-known saying, ‘use it or lose it’, and never has this been more true than in the case of exercise and the body. One of the most significant factors when it comes to pain free movement for those who suffer from arthritis is the strength, biomechanics and endurance of their movement of day to day life. If you are not practicing, learning and repeating good movements, you’re missing out on the pain relief that beautiful movement offers the arthritic body, and what’s best of all is this type of movement is free! Read more below.

These joints connect the base of your spine (sacrum) to your pelvis. Other joints, such as the hips and shoulders, can also be involved. 07.01.2022 Our Ask Kat - this month's question was, is posture important? Posture is a frequent topic discussed by clinicians and patients alike, media and society. There is an inherent belief that pain (particularly in the spine) is caused by sitting, standing or bending incorrectly. There is little evidence to support these common beliefs and a large posture industry has flourished, with many interventions and products claiming to correct posture and prevent pain. Bottom line - posture is not as important as we once thought. Learn why on on the link below.
