25.01.2022 A happy new 2020 to everyone who has visited and liked this page. I have noticed that there have been some great art experiences for children available but sadly I have needed to recharge this summer after a busy year of relief teaching. Thank you to all those who reached out and asked questions about this year I do hope to find a harmonious path forward and will be back when the time is right. Have a lovely summer and take care of your lovely children :)

25.01.2022 A quick water colour line drawing when camping. Having a winter break from Art in the Pod. I do teach as a relief teacher and still pondering when to do more art classes at the RTBG. Spring may be the answer.

22.01.2022 This is a design activity incorporating symmetry, shape, fine motor and imagination. Start with a discussion on what symmetry is or look for a kids YouTube video on symmetry in Maths. Maybe do a #symmetry search for something you find interesting. Flipping and turning is also in the maths curriculum for grade 5 so this is an opportunity to Google a video on that too.... I usually demonstrate this activity whilst pointing out: Simple shapes on edges, not corners After cutting shapes out, fit them back in before flipping Paste the big shape first Use a small rectangle for A4 page as I have done, so it fits Flip each shape one by one, applying glue straight away to the back so you aren't confused Use praise - any mistakes I say is art :)

21.01.2022 There will be no Art in the Pod in AprilThere will be no Art in the Pod in April

19.01.2022 What can my older children do ? Answer: For the first few days, it's fairly likely that they will be happy to be allowed to do what they want. Be aware, that they may be confused or stressed in some part of their mind, and may therefore find it harder to process information. Let them help out with younger children, or you both do some relaxing things together. Older children will want a project but right now, have it be something simple and probably something you would do a...nyway. So, two things - a job and a reward. e.g. Vacuuming and extra screen time. Make sure screen time has a curfew. Looking after younger siblings and having their favourite meals. Maybe have them plan the cooking for a week. Tidying their room followed by a movie on the couch with the whole family and popcorn. Delayed gratification is the rule. If they ask for something, make a time and a condition. e.g. can I use the computer at 9am ? No, you can do a maths game at 11am and have some game time at 7pm after you clean the kitchen bench and put out the garbage.

18.01.2022 Almost one full week back at school and getting ready to plan new classes. Thinking Tuesdays or Thursdays - wondering which is best ?

18.01.2022 Some great sculptures produced this week - such hard work and fun :)

17.01.2022 NEW CLASSES for April !!! I hope everyone has had a great start to the school year - it has been a busy time for me as I am a primary school relief teacher and have been fully booked for the last two weeks ! After doing my Bachelor of Arts at Sydney Uni, I did my primary teaching training in Hobart, qualifying in 1995 and in early 2000's I went to art school and did my Fine Arts Degree.... So, Art in the Pod is a special time for me to implement my ideas and provide opportunities for learning about art without having to think about a curriculum (although the Australian art curriculum for primary schools, especially early years, is all about experiencing creativity). So, here are the dates for end of term and school holidays so far - Thursday 4th April and Thursday 11th April (Week 9 and Week 10 of Term) 9AM session finishes before or at 11am - classes in morning for young preschoolers or homeschoolers (starting anytime after 9am). $15 per hour Adults are welcome and expected to attend with children younger than 4, and you are very welcome to join in, socialise with other parents or just relax and read a book. 11AM - 12NOON - BREAK TIME - no class. 12noon - 2pm ADULT CLASS 2.30 onwards until 4.15 (arrive when you can) PRIMARY SCHOOL AGE ART CLASSES HOLIDAYS Wednesday 17th April Thursday 18th April (details soon for holiday program) More information coming soon. Book direct with me at this stage and I will have other booking options available later. Email : [email protected] mobile: 0407 879 395

13.01.2022 It has been wonderful to see how much children and parents have enjoyed experimenting and playing with Art during the summer season of Art in the Pod - it has been so great to see children showing passion and loving their art experiences and enjoying the processes of creating. Stay tuned soon for lots of new sessions - sculptural and non sculptural, Instruction and play, different materials and new ideas. I am currently putting together days and times for after school classes..., parent/child classes and some adult only sessions. Looking at Wednesdays and Thursdays for this at the moment - any thoughts on days that might work or not work for you are welcome. Planning to start in late Feb one day per week , then during week 1 of the holidays (end of the week)

10.01.2022 Last few days this week. Today and tomorrow are the last two days of Art in the Pod for this summer. It has been a lovely time here in the gardens and I am looking forward to many more lovely classes at some other holidays in the future :) Because of the weather and smoke conditions, I am suggesting that the morning sessions are probably nicest at the moment so I will be packing up as planned at 3pm tomorrow.... I will be around if anyone wants to have a look through this afternoon but I probably won't be running the afternoon offer that I started yesterday as the Pod is such a lovely environmental building and unfortunately the smoke in Hobart is a little thick at the moment if the weather is hot in the afternoon. A lovely time has been had by all :) Will post some of the lovely sculptures in a few minutes on my phone !

10.01.2022 More works on paper and a few sculptures - plus a few sketches I have enjoyed doing when instructing

06.01.2022 Classes in April will only be running if I get the numbers - at this stage I may be cancelling the 4-18th April classesClasses in April will only be running if I get the numbers - at this stage I may be cancelling the 4-18th April classes

06.01.2022 We are going to read a story called "Sometimes I feel like a mouse"

02.01.2022 See the video below for ideas on setting up for the morning. More videos later on each activity. Remember to relax and be at home, just develop an easy structure. Check out day 1 for ideas on mindfulness after outside play or when you're stressed. Some mindful art videos today.

01.01.2022 Day 2 If you organise your children with a self help station while you make breakfast, check your emails, have a shower, sleep in or get some work done, it's a win-win. Keep using a lunchbox. It will give a sense of routine. That way, cooking can be educational. Have them look up a recipe for you and weigh the ingredients. Watch a cooking video. Three times. Then do it. What else are you going to do with that hoard ? Hint: Google the ingredients you have so you don't have to go shopping or else plan the weekly shop together and have your child type it on the computer into a PowerPoint or decorate a paper version with collaged junk mail pix.

01.01.2022 Structuring your day at home As a relief teacher, I am familiar with the general routine that primary and high schools follow. YOU ARE NOT SCHOOL and you don't need to be, but you can use some tricks that teachers use to get through the day so it is fun ! Use positive language and offer choices. Use fun activities as a reward after completing a task. Use household chores and activities as a learning experience - read the back of a seed packet or a recipe - put together a... flatpack together - teach them to sew or knit or do woodwork. Design something - a pet bed, a doll house, a car, a camp site, a garden. Make your own toys, make miniature things out of junk, keep bottle tops for art, cut up cardboard and plastic containers to make toys, the possibilities are endless and Pinterest has so many ideas. So as to avoid disappointment, I make it clear from the start that we will have jobs to do and fun in between. Use a plan that the children understand and can see clearly as they will be used to this. Give them choices and breaks or changes in activity after about 40 minutes. You are at home....so relax.... For older childen, their attention span will be longer so you can have some time to do your own thing while they are occupied but they will need some inspiration after about half an hour of independent work. For younger children, you can let them play after a task. Here is a typical pattern for a day, adapted for home :) The highlighted parts can give you an idea of a structure and the other bits can be possibilities for different days. Don't try to do too much but have options in mind depending on your mood. Be prepared to throw your plan out the window if you have another idea at the last minute, and don't expect too much work time. They are not at work.....it's school, they are children. You will show them something or explain something then leave them to work on it and maybe do your own work at the other end of the kitchen table then have a break and do something else. Try to do two constructive things in the morning at least, and one in the afternoon. For very young or active children, have a few options and you can just finish off in the afternoon on some days, whereas others you might need to work on something more interesting. Go with the flow. For older children, an ongoing project each week, or a couple of different projects or hobbies would be ideal. Maybe incorporate some FaceTime with friends to share what you have done. PLEASE PLEASE don't rely on tv or computers between 9 and 3. Keep screen time to a minimum unless it is for a specific task. Children know what they are not allowed to do at school and you don't want them gaming or watching creepy videos on youtube all day and night. Have a curfew with the screens, guys after that time. Find other passions and interests for them to spend their time doing.

01.01.2022 Set yourself up at the start of each day (either the night before or when you get up) for mindfulness time. I do this after recess and lunch every day. Children can rest, read, colour or draw after being outside. We usually eat before going outside or in the sun. You can relax as well or take the time to set up the next activity. 2 learning blocks and an afternoon activity is enough.

01.01.2022 Day 1 24.3.20 Music - try googling "children's relaxation music" and play a video of scenery and calm music in the background.... At the start of every day, have some visuals and independent activities set up somewhere obvious. You don't need a whiteboard - could just be a piece of paper but if you do have a whiteboard, then kids will love to write on it. I usually don't let children write on mine, I either give them their own or perhaps you can let them use it in break time or after "school". These sensory cushions are great for stress. You can rub your hands in them, draw in them, make letters and numbers. If there are things you don't want children doing - say "We can play with these inside but we don't throw inside. We can throw balls outside later". Give choices of acceptable behaviour and observe their energy and interests to determine what a reward activity will be. Other sensory activities - squishy things e.g. playdough, cooking. Put some dry beans or rice in a baking tray with some toys or things to discover e.g. shell's, stones, spoons or text as. Have some paper, scissors, pencils, glue or tape handy on the kitchen table for later, and maybe a few old magazines with pretty pictures not half naked women preferably :)

01.01.2022 Welcome to the at home version of Art in the Pod If you have made the choice to stay home with your children, you may or may not be also working from home. As a relief teacher in primary school classrooms, I incorporate art, craft, hands-on activities, games, physical activity and mindfulness into each day and I want to share this with you.... If you are a parent, I hope this will help you organise your days and give you some inspiration. I will include activities for adults as well as children. A lot of the activities I do in the classroom are things that I also enjoy doing such as mindfulness, role play, art etc. If you are a teacher or relief teacher, I thought this was an appropriate time to share some of the ways in which I run my days at home and at school. Something for Adults: MAKING ART ON A COMPUTER SCREEN Pictured below is an online drawing I did on my laptop recently. I use a microsoft surface GO which is a little like an ipad with a keyboard and has a touch screen. You will need a graphic pen which costs about $100 from JB HiFi or similar and I downloaded a software program called "Sketchbook". I have an instagram account where I have uploaded a lot of other similar sketches @lindaveska if you are interested, and I will give you some tips on how to use Sketchbook to select colours and what works for me. It is a free program and I don't use any of the premium features.
