23.01.2022 Recent Restoration. Australian Cedar chest of drawers c1870. Should have taken a 'before' photo on this one. It had a very hard life..broken, teetering, bits missing, covered in 3-4 coats of black shellac, unrecognizable now after careful and sympathetic rebuilding, relining of drawers, then a cautious and systematic stripping down to original finish and resealing in spirit varnish. Traditional techniques and materials used. Waiting on 2 knobs for bottom drawer. There is a 'feel' needed in restoring antique cedar that only experience can teach. There is a point in the restoration where the intrinsic values of the piece have been maximised, and to go beyond that point can mean the value has been lost almost completely. Very pleased with this one.
