24.01.2022 Thanks to Kate for this charming symbolic bonnet tribute for Mary Monaghan who was transported to Australia aboard the Martin Luther in 1852. Kate has such beautiful handwriting. So easy to read. This bonnet is part of my ‘’Roses from the Heart’ memorial tribute. Kate is a keen needlewomen and is finding plenty of uses for scraps of material that she has amassed over the years. She very generously shares them amongst attendees who come along to my ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnet making event being run 10.30am - 2.30pm of a Monday in the picturesque Tea Rooms at Glen Derwent colonial property, New Norfolk. Thanks to Glen Derwent hosts Liz and Rob Virtue.
24.01.2022 It’s easy to see that Kate has seamstress skills..... this is a beautifully created bonnet tribute, part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project. Kate not only creates special bonnets but she shares all sorts of fabric goodies from her ‘stash’ collected over the years. Kate is a regular attendee at my bonnet making events of a Monday at Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation, New Norfolk. She is generous with her time and skills helping those who need some guidance in... the construction of the symbolic bonnets. I sourced the ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial bonnet pattern from an assigned servants bonnet, circa 1860. This bonnet, Kate’s tribute, remembers Sarah Carroll transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the John William Dare in 1852. There will be two more Monday bonnet making workshops this month at the spectacular colonial property, Glen Derwent, New Norfolk. These events are free. (10.30am - 2.30pm). Liz and Rob Virtue owners of the estate, are strong supporters of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project and they graciously provide endless supplies of tea and coffee and goodies from the kitchen to help sustain attendees. Depending on the Covid-19 circumstances situation my Monday, weekly get-togethers at Glen Derwent will recommence in January 2021. Thanks to Liz and Rob Virtue, Glen Derwent owners, for their continued support and to all the enthusiastic bonnet makers and to the lovely community members who assist my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial by providing fabric and ephemera and help in a myriad of other ways.
22.01.2022 Thanks to the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Councillor Anna Reynolds for the invitation to display ‘Roses from the Heart’ Bonnets in the foyer of the Hobart Town Hall. The symbolic bonnet tributes are from my collection. Each bonnet remembers the life of a convict woman . The Bonnets chosen for display highlight women who worked at Government House, or have a connection in some way to either Government House or properties nearby in Macquarie Street, Hobart Town. Photographed with me... is Rob Pryce-Jones, a descendant of Mary Bleeze, who spent a number of years working at Government House. The Bonnets have been installed at this time as part of the Hobart City Councils showcasing of International Womens Day/ week. The will remain on show as a feature display. Information on each of the women’s lives accompanies the Bonnets. Amongst the Bonnets is a tribute to Elizabeth Bruce, ancestor of Richard Warner AM, husband of the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor, the Honourable Kate Warner, AC. Lyn Lowry, from Queensland, another descendant of Elizabeth Bruce, has created this bonnet for her ancestor. The baby’s bonnet, symbolising the convict womens children, has been created from a shirt donated by renown Tasmanian artist Luke Wagner, who lives on the Government House Estate with his wife, Ainstie Wagner who is the Executive Chief at Government House. If you have a female convict ancestor who was assigned to work at Government House I would love to hear from you.
22.01.2022 Thanks to Mel Woodford, President, Newcastle Family History Society, for taking time to gather some photos together, as a lovely keepsake of the lead up to, and the launch of the significant event - ‘They Sent me North: Female Convicts in the Hunter’; ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial Bonnets - held in the Lovett Gallery, Newcastle.
22.01.2022 Jane is a master when it comes to embroidery. This is such an attractive bonnet remembering the life of Sarah McDonnel transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the ‘Blackfriar’ in 1851. Thanks Jane. Photo taken today at the ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial bonnet making event at Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation colonial property, New Norfolk. A really beautiful environment to create ‘Roses from the Heart’ symbolic bonnets. Thanks to Glen Derwent owners Liz & Rob Virtue for their generosity sharing their colonial property.
20.01.2022 Today Cathy Paul presented me with this beautiful bonnet, laden with symbolism, remembering the life of Catharine Conway who was transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the Blackfriar in 1851. Cathy’s accompanying thoughts will be displayed with this ‘Roses from the Heart’ Memorial bonnet tribute whenever it is exhibited. The motif on the back of the bonnet of a barred cell with flames ablaze, leaping upwards, reflects the fact that Catharine was sentenced to transportation for the crime of ‘arson’. Thanks Cathy.
20.01.2022 Thanks Mel Woodford for creating this memento of the very successful launch and exhibition, ‘They sent me North: Female Convicts in the Hunter’ in conjunction with a display of ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial bonnet tributes, focussing on convict woman who spent time in the Hunter Region.
18.01.2022 #glenderwenttearoom #glenderwenttearooms #glenderwent #bonnetmakingevent #rosesfromtheheart #roses #gardens #peacocks #peahens #rooster #tearooms #accommodation Lovely day creating symbolic ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial bonnet tributes at the delightful colonial property, Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation, New Norfolk, Tasmania each Monday I run a Bonnet Making Evening event at Glen Derwent. The bonnets remember the lives of convict women sentenced to transportation to Australia 1788-1853.
16.01.2022 This beautiful bonnet tribute from Cristy Walker remembers the life of Mary Walker transported on the Lady Juliana in 1789. Cristy has pointed out to me many connections between Mary Walker and herself and her own family. I was unaware of any of these links when I chose Mary Walker for Cristy to remember with a symbolic bonnet. Thank you so much for taking part in my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial tribute.
16.01.2022 Thanks to Jane for this attractive bonnet tribute remembering Susan Harris transported aboard the ‘Duchess of Northumberland’ to Van Diemens Land in 1853. A delightful bonnet tribute. Jane is a regular attendee at my weekly ‘Roses from the Heart’ Monday bonnet making event at the charming colonial property, Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation, New Norfolk. Jane is always happy to assist others who might need encouragement or some professional help in creating their symbolic bonnet. Thanks.
16.01.2022 Wonderful day at Glen Derwent yesterday. The fabulous Regency House and Garden Party was organised by the Folk Federation of Tasmania Inc in collaboration with Glen Derwent. Couldn’t ask for a more appropriate venue. The history of the property traces back to the Cullen family, free settlers when they sailed to Van Diemen’s Land but their arrival in Australia was via New South Wales/ Norfolk Island. Mr Cullen’s wife, Elizabeth Bartlett, arrived in NSW aboard the Marquis Corn...wallis in 1796. The home was built in 1818. Today it’s a wonderful Tea room and Guest house. Owners Rob and Liz Virtue are welcoming hosts and along with their fabulous staff they’ve created a very special haven for escaping to for the recharging of one’s battery.... The Derwent Valley Players provided entertainment with their specially written play featuring, a glimpse of life in the 1800s...the Cullens along with the Fentons - a newly arrived couple to the district, plus bushrangers, constabulary and a convict maid or two.... excellent entertainment. It was a treat being invited to showcase ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnets and meet some terrific people from around Australia. All gathered to enjoy the Regency Party. Photographic journalist Alan Jennison is documenting the days events on his ‘Tasmanian Living’ App. See more
15.01.2022 A very special baby’s christening bonnet. This wee bonnet has been lovingly sewn by Helen for her relative - her great, great, great uncle James Jamieson who died aged just 19 months of age at the Cascades Female Factory, South Hobart. Baby James was born to convict lass Janet Jamieson on 14 April 1849. Helen has sent an accompanying letter with her symbolic bonnet. Her letter is very moving. It is obvious the treatment of this little boy and all the babies similarly treated ...within the Convict System, as she herself says, ‘tears at her heart’. Along with her letter Helen has sent relevant information about the terrible circumstances that babies such as little James were subjected to. Her information has been sourced from Https://www.femaleconvicts.org.au This bonnet adds to the tribute ‘Roses from the Heart’ commemorative bonnet Helen has sewn for Janet Jamieson. Thanks Helen.
14.01.2022 Irish artist educator Jojo Hynes and her partner in crime Duncan Hunter-Holland at the ABC studios this morning. Duncan the photographer, was the camera man on the video ‘Forget Me Not’ that will be launched today at the Loop, 157 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. 11.00-11.30am, FREE EVENT. Great chatting with Ryk Goddard on ABC Breakfast this morning.
14.01.2022 Thanks to Marjorie Van Dorssen for her delightfully embroidered bonnet remembering the life of Eliza Palmer who arrived in Van Diemen’s Land aboard the St Vincent in 1849. This symbolic bonnet is part of the ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project.
13.01.2022 If you happen to be in Singleton or the Hunter Valley or have an opportunity to travel to Singleton between the 11 March and the 24 April 2020 you will be able to see beautiful 'Roses from the Heart' Memorial bonnets on display at the Singleton Public Library. The symbolic bonnets on display remember convict women who spent time in Singleton, New South Wales. Many of these bonnets have been lovingly created by women in the Hunter Valley. A group of wonderful women have gather...ed together at the Newcastle Family History Society Inc to stitch and embellish bonnet tributes. Each of these bonnets are part of the 'Roses from the Heart' Memorial project a global tribute remembering all the convict women transported to Australia 1788-1853. Huge thanks to Melodie Woodford, President of the Newcastle Family History Society Inc and to Vicki Osborne, Public Relations Officer, Maitland and district Genealogical Society Inc. Also enormous thanks to the Singleton Public Library staff and all the enthusiastic volunteers who assisted in assembling the bonnet installation. See more
13.01.2022 A number of bonnets awaited me today at the Post Office. This bonnet has been lovingly stitched and embroidered by Catherine Marley, Lisa Hopwood and Heather Blair. The three women who devised the embellishments took their ideas from plants relative to Willow Court where the lass being remembered, Mary Crampton, died on 21 October 1863. So much care and attention to the making of this bonnet has been taken by Catherine, Marley and Heather. It’s lovely to have additional information included along with the bonnet. Thanks. This bonnet for Mary Crampton will be displayed in New Norfolk early next year along with a number of other ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial tributes remembering the women who spent time/ died in Willow Court, New Norfolk’
12.01.2022 Anne working on a bonnet tribute, part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project remembering the life of Jane McFarlane. Lovely printing, so easy to read. In my opinion the most important item of a bonnet tribute is the name of the lass being remembered. This photo was taken yesterday at my ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnet making event at Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation colonial property, New Norfolk.
12.01.2022 It’s wonderful having Jane involved in creating bonnet tributes as part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ Memorial project. The lovely thing about the bonnet making events I’ve been holding at Glen Derwent Tea Room and Accommodation colonial property is that there is a great mix of people joining together with their various talents and enthusiasm in creating bonnet tributes for Australia’s convict women, as part of my global project. Jane has been working on this bonnet at Glen D...erwent as well as at her own home. Working along with others in the peaceful environment of Glen Derwent, New Norfolk one easily forgets day to day life matters. One is drawn into the rhythmic act of needle drawing thread through fabric, a ritual so many convict women engaged in, and the bonnet maker today connects with a lass from the past being remembered through this simple action. Thanks to Liz and Rob Virtue, owners of Glen Derwent, for their hospitality allowing me to run my weekly bonnet making event at their property. To everyone who comes along to the workshops, or who contributes by sending along fabric or embellishments, thank you. See more
11.01.2022 A still image from the 3 minute video 'Forget Me Not' by Irish artist, educator, Jojo Hynes. Jojo Hynes is a visual and collaborative artist from Galway, Ireland. Thanks to all who have donated fabric, doillies, buttons etc. I have used a variety of people’s donated treasures including beautiful red lace kindly given by Ruth Binnny of New Norfolk. I began this bonnet last Monday at my weekly ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnet making session at Glen Derwent (10.30am - 2.30pm). Tomorrow is the second l...ast bonnet making session at Glen Derwent, New Norfolk for 2020. 09.01.2022 This lovely bonnet tribute remembers the life of Elizabeth Harvey transported aboard the America in 1831. This bonnet has been meticulously sewn by Elizabeth Vincent. It is part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial tribute. Thanks Elizabeth.
08.01.2022 I am thrilled to have my textile art projects included in an article in the latest publication of the Bulletin of OIDFA / quarterly journal of the International Bobbin and Needle Lace Organisation. The article ‘Roses from the Heart’ ‘Roses du coeur’ is covered on pages 21-25 and includes colour images on each page. This article was written prior to my collaboration with the Headford Lace Project. The article was initiated before my visit to Ireland in 2019 and my involvemen...t with events with the Headford Lace Project, a wonderful group of lace makers and lace enthusiasts in Ireland, who organised a range of successful series of public events in Headford, County Galway mid-year last year. This article was also penned before my visiting County Armagh and my engagement with the South Armagh Lace Collective in Ireland in 2019 and events they arranged within the community. My association with these organisations and all those involved has been, and continues to be, a very special connection. I’m looking forward to sharing stories that have emerged from these significant partnerships.
07.01.2022 Thanks to Mel Woodford for this lovely booklet that showcases some of the moments captured on camera during the organising and launch of ‘They sent me North - Female Convicts in the Hunter’ in conjunction with an exhibition of ‘Roses from the Heart’ Bonnets remembering transported women who spent time in the Hunter region.
05.01.2022 Massive thanks to Pamela for her parcel of lace received yesterday. This is a portion of the contents posted. This generous gift will be incorporated into bonnets being created as part of my memorial projects.
05.01.2022 I completed this bonnet for Ellen Nolan at the Regency House and Garden Party at Glen Derwent on Sunday. Ellen was transported aboard the ‘Midlothian’ in 1853. This bonnet is part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial tribute involving over 25,000 participants around the world. I often incorporate doillies as embellishment. Thanks to all who have donated lace, buttons, ribbons and doillies to be used in the creating of this textile art project that names and values our fem...ale convict ancestors. Glen Derwent was a wonderful venue to be stitching and embellishing mementos showcasing women who for many generations were shrouded by a veil of amnesia. Thanks to the Folk Federation Tasmania Inc and Glen Derwent for inviting me to be part of the wonderful Regency House and Garden Party held last weekend. Such an enjoyable day. See more
02.01.2022 Great chatting with Ryk Goddard this morning on ABC Radio ‘Breakfast’ Show. With Irish artist educator Jojo Hynes.
01.01.2022 Thanks to Marjorie Van Dorssen from Victoria for this lovely bonnet tribute. Beautifully embroidered this bonnet for Sarah Povey details her arrival in Van Diemen’s Land in 1849 aboard the St Vincent. Thanks so much for being part of the ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project.
01.01.2022 So excited that the Singleton Public Library are hosting an exhibition of symbolic bonnets created as part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project. The bonnets on display will include the female convicts who spent time in the Hunter Valley, with an emphasis on those who were in Singleton. I am greatly indebted to Mel Woodford (president of the Newcastle Family History Soc Inc) and to Vicki Osborn, (Public Relations Officer, Maitland and Beyond Family History Inc) for th...eir continued support for my ‘Roses from the Heart’ Memorial project. It’s especially gratifying that they are liaising with the Singleton Public Library to invite members of the public to connect with female convicts stories through an exhibition of personalised bonnet tributes. To all those who have so kindly given of their time and skills to stitch and embellish bonnets acknowledging the transported women’s lives I extend my heartfelt appreciation. If you live in Singleton, or plan to visit, I hope you choose to drop into the library and enjoy the exhibition. See more
01.01.2022 Thanks to Jane for this decorative bonnet tribute remembering the life of Susan Edwards Buckley. Susan was transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the Duchess of Northumberland in 1853. Jane has been stitching away and embroidering this beautiful bonnet ( that is part of my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project ) at the Monday bonnet making sessions that I’ve been running at Glen Derwent, New Norfolk. It’s inspirational gathering with others who... are keen to give voice to the past through the art of stitching. There is a wonderful camradery as people share knowledge, skills, fabric and stories relating to convict ancestry. Liz and Rob Virtue, owners of Glen Derwent Tea Rooms and Accommodation, enthusiastically support my ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial and they generously allow the use of their Tea Rooms as the venue for the weekly symbolic bonnet making gettogethers. Tea and coffee and treats from the kitchen mean no one leaves feeling hungry. It’s also lovely when someone arrives with homemade delights. Last week Yvonne brought along a freshly baked lemon cake - delicious. So if you’ve been thinking about joining in and creating a ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnet tribute then do come along. You’ll be most welcome. There will be two more Monday sessions (10.30am - 2.30pm) this year at Glen Derwent. Monday 23 November and Monday 30th November 2020. Depending on the Covid-19 situation next year the plan is to resume back at Glen Derwent in January 2021. Thanks to Liz & Rob Virtue and to all who contribute to the ‘Roses from the Heart’ memorial project. Many of the bonnets being created at the Monday bonnet making sessions at Glen Derwent in New Norfolk remember the lives of convict women associated with the Asylum Hospital, New Norfolk. Some remember convict women who lived or worked in New Norfolk, such as Elizabeth Bartlett. Elizabeth Bartlett was the wife of First Fleeter ex convict, James Bryan Cullen. James and Elizabeth and their children arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in 1807 from Norfolk Island and were given acreage in New Norfolk. We sit and sew of a Monday in the Cullens home. We gaze out onto the heritage garden and imagine life as it was played out there in the early 1800s .
