23.01.2022 "The arts in Australia is in an existential crisis. It's always tough for the arts, and in a pandemic now it's going to push organisations over the edge." - Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) chief conductor in residence, Benjamin Northey

23.01.2022 Last week Arts Law made a submission to the inquiry into Rio Tintos destruction of two 46,000-year-old Aboriginal cultural sites in caves at the Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is time for Australia to enact legislation that respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognises the inherent value in Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property.

23.01.2022 The roadmap for "Covid normal" from the Federal Government is a much needed step towards recovery for the struggling live music and performance sectors. The arts have value to Australia's economy, to our communities and importantly to our wellbeing but we have learned through Covid how fragile the sector can be. We still need dedicated funding and policy at all levels of government to create a sustainable, resilient arts sector. #SupportTheArts https://buff.ly/35MEtEd

22.01.2022 ‘COVID is destroying livelihoods of writers through loss of their day jobs in many fields, but especially by eviscerating three major income streams public speaking, university teaching, and freelance writing.’ - Charlotte Wood, writer Last week writers told the Parliamentary Inquiry into Australia’s creative and cultural industries and institutions their stories of hardship as a result of sustained funding cuts to the arts, the de-valuation of humanities in universities and the pandemic. Without urgent investment Australia's literary sector is at risk. #supportthearts

Arts Law exists to strengthen respect and value for arts and culture. This partnership allows us to further our purpose. Language is intrinsically linked to culture. 21.01.2022 Its not just about going digital for the fair; it is arming them to better protect their future. We needed our art centres to feel comfortable in this space. Part of that process has been putting them through a cyber training course, which has covered everything from protecting their bank accounts, to protecting images against downloads. - Claire Summers, DAAF Foundation Executive Director,

17.01.2022 This year's Archibald exhibition has the strongest Indigenous representation on and off the walls since the prize's inception.

17.01.2022 Its not just having our venues closed. Its also that were removed from our purpose. Its about more than just money. This feels like were having to take a big step back. - Claire Spencer, chief executive of Arts Centre Melbourne The new restrictions in place in Victoria are devastating to arts organisations ho have been working to re-open and implement new business models. 13.01.2022 The arts are so important to our communities, especially in times of crisis. Arts Law is here to help artists when they need us the most. Help us to support Australia's artists by giving a tax-deductible donation: https://buff.ly/2Jozcbw I conduct a community choir of health workers. In this time of COVID-19 I thought it would be fun to create video of a hygiene-themed version of a popular song. I had very limited knowledge and was in fear of doing the wrong thing, whilst ...keenly wanting to do the right thing. The choir's only purpose is to serve the health of the health workers and by talking to you, I was able to continue to fulfil my role by not putting more stress on them. You generously and kindly gave me clarity I needed. Your knowledge has had a huge impact on the joy of these health workers during their shifts at the hospital. After speaking with you, I had a clear idea as to what I needed to do to obtain the appropriate licence. We have now obtained that licence and received a personal message of support from the original artist! Prior to talking with you, I wasn't sure if I could even pursue the "handwashing" project. If it wasn't for having had the opportunity to ask you all my questions, and having your professional ear, I probably would have dropped the whole thing. As a low income artist, I also really appreciated that this service was provided to me free of cost! Thank you Arts Law. I have been raving about you to everyone! - Elizabeth Lecoanet, Choir Conductor The RPA "Feel Good" healthcare workers choir (photo taken in 2019 pre-coronavirus). Isabel Hanson 2019.

Read our case study to see how Arts Law helped Martumili Artists in Western Australia after a safe full of wills was destroyed in a fire. https://www.artslaw.com.au//arts-law-assists-with-lost-wi/

12.01.2022 Well done to the 2021 John Villiers Outback Art Prize! Late last year we reviewed the T&Cs of this prize and gave it 5 out of 5 stars. They enthusiastically engaged with Arts Law and we are thrilled that they took on board every one of our suggestions. As a result, these T&Cs are an excellent example of best practice when dealing with artists.

The arts are valued in their own right and as contributors to social and cultural inclusion, and should be recognised as part of an essential element in any COVID-19 recovery.
