25.01.2022 REGISTER FOR NANGA CHALLENGE 2020 ! Rego back up and New Category for 2020: DOUBLE MOUNTAIN BIKE - 60K Its time to go bush again adventure junkies. Ascot Kayak Clubs multisport event in the Jarrah forest surrounding Dwellingup is set for Saturday 12th September.... Register here: https://www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=217060 With the absence of the Avon Descent on this years kayaking calendar, this is the year you must try the Nanga Challenge if you have never experienced this fun event. The paddle leg is grade 1 at typical water levels, with only one or two small rapids, (some experience in moving water a prerequisite of entry), is very achievable. This years course will have the added bonus of some new Mtb single track and some previously unused tracks on the run leg. Enter the short or long course in either solo or a relay team, a pairs category - where you complete the entire course with a mate, or the Duathlon - no paddle leg, are all available options. Come down early and get a feel for the single track, or stay on Sunday and explore more of the many new Mtb trails in the area. Maybe even a relaxed social paddle on the Sunday morning, or enjoy coffee in Pinjarra or Dwellingup on the drive home. Camping at the Chuditch site has been reserved for Nanga entrants, volunteers and families, so the more the merrier. Camping has been discounted by DPaW for our event and is at $11.00 per night per person, children at $3.00. There are no fires allowed in order to protect local Fauna in and around this campground by the Murray River, but there is a large communal kitchen we can share prior to and post event. Applicable Covid guidelines of the day will need to be followed, etc, so remember your hand sanitiser and personal hygiene. Now get out there and ride and run some hills, you will enjoy the event a whole lot more. Look forward to seeing you all there. Grant, Doug and the organising team.

24.01.2022 A huge thankyou to everyone who came down to the annual club cleanup this morning. A club is only as successful as its active members and if today is anything to go by - we are in for a great year! It’s looking squeaky clean... One task left - a call out if someone can wash the lounge covers in the next couple of days (AKC will reimburse the cost if you take to a laundromat) because we have many hall bookings at the moment. They are already removed ready to go. Thankyou.

24.01.2022 All welcome for division seeded racing over 1000m, 500m and 200m

24.01.2022 Results are in - thanks everyone for being part of the mini Adventure Race.

23.01.2022 AKC BOAT RACKS The waiting list for a boat rack is currently close to 40. This is the largest it has ever been The by-law clearly states boat racks can't be used for long term storage. With the membership renewal coming up, we are putting a call (plea) to the members who have a boat stored at the club, which isn't being used to consider taking their boat home and relinquishing the rack for an active paddler. This way we can quickly reduce the waiting list.... We would appreciate it very much and it would help out our incredibly hard working boat bay administrator. If you are wanting to relinquish your boat bay please email [email protected] ASAP. The boat will need to be removed by 30th September. An audit was completed of the boat racks yesterday and a number of inactive boats have been identified. Thanks for your cooperation. AKC Boat Bays and Committee

19.01.2022 The WA Slalom Technical Committee are running their annual Walyunga Camp this Saturday and Saunday. They have coaches available for adult beginners, juniors (who have had some previous whitewater experience) and our high performance athletes. Can't attend all weekend? We have one day options available as well. AKC members are able to borrow club boats if you don't have anything suitable.... Registrations close this Friday so get your registrations in for a fun weekend out on the water! See more

18.01.2022 Last club breakfast for the year Saturday 19th. Enjoy a bacon and egg roll and fresh coffee from - Jeannette Busch - our very favourite coffee lady. Thanks Jeanette for being part of Saturday mornings. If you’re celebrating Xmas at Sandy Beach call into AKC after for a coffee and spread some Xmas cheer

18.01.2022 Peer Group Social Paddle, Jurien Bay, Friday, 18th September to Sunday/Monday, 20th/21st September This is our second attempt to do this peer group paddling weekend, the first being a Covid casualty!... We plan to paddle about 12km on each day of the weekend, starting early mornings; to Seal Rocks and nearby islands scattered along the coast, then, from Sandy Cape south past Sandlands Island to an unnamed cove just north of the bay (and return). As usual, these plans are subject to the weather! Theres also a shorter paddle to Favourite Island available if we want to do that, about 6km total. The offshore reefs and islands protect this area from the Indian Ocean swells, so it is suitable for less experienced sea kayakers. We wont be negotiating surf take off or landings. You need to have a suitable ocean going craft and various other items required for sea kayakers. We will be up to 2 nautical miles off the mainland and within 400m from the offshore islands. You can check what you need here. Also, contact me, if needed, for more detail on this. Rivergods has suitable craft for hire, including doubles, if you dont have the right boat amongst your fleet. Reasonably priced. For non-paddling partners/friends who might like to come along there are activities and special sights in the area worth checking out. Cycle the 12km coastal bike path which goes from the harbour south to Hill River. Lunch at the Lobster Shack in nearby Cervantes. Wildflowers are likely to be out in abundance at nearby Mt Lesueur National Park where theres also a trail to the summit. Likewise, flowers at The Pinnacles National Park. Stockyard Gully has a cave system. The walktrail at Green Head encompasses the gorgeous but mysteriously named Dynamite Bay. We will stay at the caravan park in the centre of the small town - one can camp and there are chalets. Jurien Bay is about 2 hours 20mts drive from the CBD. To express your interest or for more information please contact Robyn [email protected] Photo shows indented coastline looking towards Sandy Cape.

16.01.2022 NEXT SOCIAL PADDLE, SERPENTINE RIVER 8th or 15th Aug Serpentine River, Lakes and Wetlands, about 20km. Either Saturday, 8th August or Saturday, 15th August This is a flatwater paddle suitable for paddlers with some experience and able to do the distance. We put in at Karnup Road bridge, paddling down the (man-modified) river, now a channel, eventually finding our way across the wetlands to Lake Amarillo, then on to the wooden bridge for a picnic lunch. Then its a matter o...f following sections of river which connect lakes Guanarnup and Yalbanberup to our finish at Woodland Parade. One is surrounded mostly by natural environment: wooded banks, rushes and sedges with many waterbirds and even kangaroos. It can be interesting finding the way to Lake Amarillo across the wetlands! We need a bit more rain for this, hence the two possible dates. If there is enough water by the end of the week, 8th August, then well go, if not, we will try for the following week with fingers crossed for a front or two to pass overhead. The meeting place and put-in, 9am, at Karnup Road bridge is easy to find, just follow the Karnup Road exit, about 50km from CBD down the freeway towards Mandurah. We need to do a car shuffle beforehand as its a one-way paddle. You will need all day for this trip. Photo shows our group at the old wooden bridge, Keralup, on our last paddle here, on the lower half of this section of the Serpentine. With club approval it is possible to borrow a boat - you need to contact Mark, [email protected] to arrange this. There is interest in this paddle and I will restrict numbers, so let me know asap if you are hoping to come. Robyn [email protected]
