25.01.2022 Infertility issues stem solely from the male in up to 50% of cases. According to some data, the quality of human semen has deteriorated by 50%-60% over the past 40 years. A high-fat diet and obesity, resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle, affects the structure of the spermatozoa, but also the development of offspring and their health in later life. Healthy dietary models clearly correlate with better sperm quality and a smaller risk of abnormalities in parameters such as sp...erm count, sperm concentration and motility, and lower sperm DNA fragmentation. Therefore, guys, you need to take care of yourself, not just for your own health but for that of your children! A varied nutrient dense diet should be emphasised. Incorporating certain therapeutic nutrients can also improve sperm parameters (even for IVF if that is indicated). Please come to see me for any fertility related issues. 24.01.2022 Hello you delicious thing! The smell of this vegan banana cake was wafting through our house this morning which worked better than alarm for a certain sleepy head it is dense, moorish and not so sweet that you couldn't eat it sliced for breakfast with peanut butter and/or jam. This banana cake is super dense as it contains 4 bananas, almond meal, desiccated coconut, coconut oil, a little maple, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Yummmmm! And although I am not an advocate for lots of sweet treats (even vegan!), sometimes...well sometimes, why not! Enjoy your life! 24.01.2022 How many sperm make it to the egg? It is an arduous journey and I will split the answer to the different stages of the race to the egg: there are approximately 200-250 million sperm in each ejaculation but only 2 million make it to the cervix. once there, out of the 2 million sperm entering the cervix, only 1 million are able to make it to the uterus. out of the 1 million that enter the uterus, only 10 000 are able to travel to the top.of this organ. out of the 10 000... that survive at this point, only half of them travel in the right direction, that is, towards the egg. out of the 5 000 sperm that enter the utero-tubal junction, about 1 000 get inside the fallopian tube. finally, out of the 1 000 that enter the tube, it is estimated only 200 make it to the egg. however, in the end, only 1 sperm out of the 200 that reach the egg is able to penetrate and fertilise it. There is a male factor involved in up to 50% of infertile couples. Sperm need energy and have to be healthy to reach their final destination and successfully fertilise the egg. Please schedule an appointment to see me to assist improve sperm quality and health. 24.01.2022 Well, this little baby is in hot demand at the moment! Echinacea angustifolia is my preferred species and the 'radix' or root, contains a higher amount of active constituents than the leaf (I am not shaming Echinacea purpurea, it is just that you need to take more to have the same medicinal effect). Not only is Echinacea a beautiful looking plant, it is as immunostimulant, which means that it stimulates the immune system into action we need it (for infections, viruses, skin... infections, eczema, upper and lower respiratory infections, urinary tract infections etc). A 2016 meta-analysis found evidence that use of Echinacea extracts reduced the risk of repeated respiratory tract infections. And how do you know it is the good stuff, it is a sialogogue, which means it stimulates saliva production...and makes your tongue tingle! I have plenty of Echinacea in stock (as I always do) as it is one of my absolute favorite herbs in my dispensary. Please come to see me for any immune related conditions or support (skype and zoom available) Yours in good health and happiness Nx . . . . #echinacea #immune #support #Covid-19 #wellness #healthyfood #health #wellbeing #wollongong #vegan #vegetarian #plantbaseddiet #naturopath #plantbased #natural #healing See more

24.01.2022 Self quarentine pretty much looks like this. If you feel unwell, have a temperature, cough, sore throat, runny nose, then stay at home. People are thought to be most contagious when they are the most symptomatic. Those of us who are healthy will just go through the motions of having a virus, unpleasant but not life threatening. However, if you are infected and come into contact with someone who has an underlying health condition, is elderly, has an autoimmune disorder, is u...ndergoing chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressive drugs, then is another matter entirely, one which could be fatal. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, if you would like to discuss immune support but do not want to attend the appointment in person, we can arrange a skype or telephone consultation. I can also arrange liquid herbal remedies to be sent to you from the clinic, and any other supplements I prescribe can be ordered from vital.ly, an online practitioner dispensing site (which you have the option to repeat). Take care of yourself and let's take care of each other. 23.01.2022 Please ensure you are eating enough seasonal vegetables and fruit during this lock down! Unfortunately, due to restrictions, a common theme with patients this week has been not eating as many veggies as they should or usually do. They are concerned about going to the supermarket too many times and risking exposure. Whilst this is a valid precaution, please stock up on your Winter veggies when you do shop. Ideally fresh, but there are organic frozen options too for when the v...eggie crisper is looking bare. Plus, if you buy seasonally, the vegetables should last longer than something that has travelled the world before it hits our shelves. There are so many delicious recipes out there for Winter veggie dishes, so please, look after your 'body, boost your immunity and your nervous system will be thankful too. 23.01.2022 Look familiar? Unfortunately, many women are stressed and exhausted, which in turns end up affecting your menstrual cycle. Bottom line is that stress and your cycle are NOT friends. How does stress impact your cycle? it can deplete your body of magnesium, B6 and zinc (hello PMS!!!) it can delay or switch off your ovulation (affecting fertility) it can cotribute to skipped cycles... it causes surges in cortisol levels and can rob your body of progesterone (PMS again!!!!) it can increase inflammatory prostaglandins that can increase menstrual cycle pain. There are amazing herbs and supplements to support your nervous system and menstrual cycle but there are also ways to support yourself too. Squeeze in some time for yourself, reconnect with nature in some way shape or form. She is a powerful healer and can put some 'juice' back into the body and calm the mind. Listen to your favourite music, dance around the house, or sit quietly wherever/whenever you can. Self care is NOT selfish, it is absolutely essential. 22.01.2022 CANCELLATION POLICY AND APPOINTMENT DEPOSIT as of 25th February a new cancellation policy and appointment deposit system will be implemented. After many years in clinical practice it has been a hard decision to make and yet a necessary one. I completely understand there are times when you must miss an appointment due to emergencies or obligations for work or family. However, when patients do not call/text/email to cancel an appointment, they could be preventing another pa...tient from getting a much needed consultation. Conversely, the situation may arise where another patient fails to cancel and I sm unable to schedule you for a consultation, due to a seemingly "full" appointment schedule. The deposit will be $30 and is taken via Secure Pay so privacy and security are protected. 22.01.2022 IMMUNE BOOSTING FOODS when your immune system comes into contact with a pathogen (viruses or bacteria), it triggers an immune response. The immne system releases antibodies, which attach to antigens on the pathogens and kills them. Incorporating specific foods into your diet may strengthen your immune response. Some of those foods include blueberries, garlic, broccoli, sweet potato, spinach, ginger, green tea, kefir, sunflower seeds, almonds, oranges, kiwi fruit, red ...and yellow capsicums, turmeric root, tomatoes, rosemary, thyme, fennel, mushrooms, manuka honey and miso, just to name a few. These are plant based options but if you eat meat, bone broths, Grandma's chicken noodle soup, wild salmon (not available in Australia) are excellent options. It is important to keep hydrated and also, hetbal teas are amazing, as they appear to damage or destroy viruses from taking hold. This could include star anise, turmeric, fennel, sage, ginger...the list is very long! Please add these foods into your diet and get your immune system in shape! 22.01.2022 Oh yes, these two are interconnected and can wreak havoc on your physical and psychological health! When your oestrogen levels are elevated, the liver starts to produce high levels of "thyroid binding globulin" (TBG): a protein that binds (just like its name!) the thyroid hormone. In addition, too much oestrogen can slow down or stop the conversion of T4 to the active hormone, T3. So, you may have a normally functioning thyroid gland and adequate amounts of thyroid hormone; h...owever with oestrogen dominance, the hormones get gobbled up or there is not enough of the active T3. This can result in hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, dry skin, weight gain, low libido, low mood, constipation and irregular and/or heavy, clotty menstrual cycles. The prevalence of oestrogen dominance is higher than ever before and the causative factors are many: environment, diet, and lifestyle are all contributors, as is chronic stress. If this sounds like you, please come to see me as there are lots of goodies in our dispensary that can assist, as well as nutritional and lifestyle support. 21.01.2022 CALCIUM AND PMS. Whether your PMS presents as mood swings, breast tenderness, food cravings, fatigue, irritability, depression or all of the above- calcium deficiency could be playing a part in your feeling awful/possessed leading up to your cycle. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 73% of women do not meet their daily calcium requirements based on dietary intake. Recent scientific papers indicated that changes in extracellular calcium concentrations in conju...nction with hypicalcaemia could have stimulatory effects of neuromuscular junctions, leading to neuromuscular irritability, mania and agitation! Magnesium and B6 are also involved in PMS symptoms as well, but that is for another day. There are wonderful plant based sources of calcium such as tahini, almonds, tempeh, oats, broccoli, green beans, cabbage, leek, onion, carrot, kale, quinoa, dried figs, chickpeas, chia seeds, sage, rosemary, parsley, poppy seeds just to name a few! 21.01.2022 I love progesterone and would like every woman to have it naturally in their life for as long as possible. Why, you may ask? Because it thins the uterine lining and balances prostaglandins (involved with inflammation and pain sensitivity), resulting in lighter and less painful menstrual cycles. It stimulates your thyroid, promotes hair growth and stimulates your metabolism, supporting healthy weight management. It also assists to build muscle and promotes good quality sleep. ...Another amazing fact about progesterone is that is is converted to allopregnanalone (a calming neurotransmitter similar to GABA) in the brain which reduces anxiety and supports the nervous system. It also improves brain health and cognitive function. Many women present in clinic with low progesterone and we are so fortunate to have in our herbal dispensory some super amazing herbs that can promote healthy ovulation and build progesterone. Nutrition and lifestyle changes can also greatly assist. Please come to see me for any hormonal issues. 20.01.2022 PCOS is the most common endocrinological disorder in women of reproductive age. Anovulatory infertility (lack of ovulation) is a common consequence of PCOS, however, there are often a number of comorbidities such as increased body mass, insulin resistance, cardiometabolic syndrome, leptin resistance, psychological issues which can contribute to a lower health related quality of life. 20.01.2022 Stress and Immunity Pandemics evoke fear in our lives, for our own safety and for others. Our environment has changed too, empty streets, cafes, shops, and we are isolating at home. The resulting stress can lead to physiological and psychological responses, including dysregulating our immune system. Your immune ststem could become suppressed to the point that latent viruses can no longer be managed, and become reactivated. One hormonal response to stress is an increase i...n cortisol levels. Chronic elevations of cortisol can lead to immune resistance. So, what can we do? The answer is to support and nurture the nervous system with beautiful herbs, such as passionflower, withania, chamomile, rehmannia, kava....just to name a few. These wonderful gifts from nature can support adrenal function, modulate cortisol levels, increase GABA (that decreases anxiety)....and by supporting your nervous system, you are improving immune function. 11.01.2022 Charting your cycle is empowering and often quite fascinating as you learn so much about your own body. It can be used as a method to achieve pregnancy or as natural birth control and is an excellent tool for understanding gynaecological problems and understanding your sexuality and body. It can also help to avoid those period surprises so you don't get caught out! Tracking your menstrual cycle simply means keeping a record of when you are menstruating and documenting other ...information related to your cycle. There are so many great apps out there that list pre-menstrual symptoms, onset and length of the bleed, colour, clots, pain, ovulation symptoms, hormonal acne etc. The length of your cycle is from the onset to the first day of your next cycle. 11.01.2022 Vaginal dryness is usually not something we want to talk about but it is a real issue that can be debilitating for so many women. Normally, the walls of the vagina stay lubricated with a thin layer of clear fluid. Oestrogen is the hormone that helps maintain that fluid and kerps the lining of your vagina healthy, thick and elastic. A drop in oestrogen levels reduces the amount of moisture available. It can happen at any age (not just those going through menopause) from a n...umber of different causes. It may seem like a minor irritation but the lack of vaginal moisture can have a huge impact on your sex life. As in, you do not want to do something that is painful! There are medications that you can discuss with your GP but if hormonal medications are not something you would like to do, there are some great natural hormone-free alternatives. 10.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS Covid-19. Question: What can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones if the virus outbreak worsens in Australia? Answer: support and strengthen your immune system! We have potent anti virals in our herbal dispensaries as well as immune supporting herbs. There are also nutritional recommendations for short and long term immune health that can be offered. The virus, demographically, appears to be more common in the 30-79 year old age group (it is very rare fo...r children to be affected with only 2% of those affected being under 18), likely reflecting the presence of other diseases, a weaker immune system, or simply worse overall health. If you would like to discuss immune support further, please contact to schedule an appointment. We can do a 15 minute consult via skype or telephone for those who cannot make it to the clinic. Alternatively, for a longer appointment you can book online at Clinic Connect or follow the links on the website. 09.01.2022 On todays menu, Greek lemony rice, white bean and vegetable soup. The traditional recipe has eggs or chicken or both but when you 'vegan-ise' it, the protein source becomes the white beans, basmati rice/wild rice and the fermented white miso paste (that makes up part of the stock). And the flavours? So delicious! The lemon really ties everything together and allows room for the spicy warmth from the black pepper to shine through; the creaminess from the rice and miso really m...arries the soup while the miso itself adds a certain earthiness and warmth. 07.01.2022 And off she goes! This is an image of an ovum (egg) moving into the fallopian tube. What an amazing event this is! The egg is fertilised by a single sperm in the fallopian tube. A man may ejaculate 40 to 150 million sperm, which swim upstream into the fallopian tube with the fast-swimming sperm reaching the egg in 30 minutes (whilst others can take days). After reaching the egg, it takes 24 hours for a sperm to fertilise the egg. The fertilised egg starts growing fast snd wi...thin 3-4 days that cluster of cells moves into the uterus for implantation. 07.01.2022 PMDD pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe, sometimes disabling extension of PMS. Women with PMDD experience predictable psychological, behavioral and physical symptoms that are aggravated approximately 6 days during the late luteal phase (or sometimes just after ovulation for some). A recent study surprisingly found that women with PMDD exhibited lower early luteal (EL) phase oestrogen levels than controls. Among the women with lower EL phase oestrogen levels, higher ...EL phase progesterone was observed with women with PMDD than controls. Somehow, the lower oestrogen level contributes to a vulnerability to the provoking effect of progesterone in the luteal phase among women with PMDD. This is very interesting as an oestrogen dominance was always considered the main suspect for PMDD and PMS. However, at the end of the day, to assist women with this debilitating condition, it is all about balance. And we have in our herbal dispensory some wonderful natural remedies to normalise the hormonal cascade. Plus nutritional and lifestyle support can empower you to take control of your hormones, not the other way around! Please come to see me for any hormonal issues. 07.01.2022 Fact: modern wheat is an opiate. Gliadin (a protein in wheat) if not fully digested in the gut, will give rise to small protein molecules known as 'polypeptides'. These can, via a leaky gut, gain access to the blood stream, and make their way across the 'blood-brain-barrier'. Once there, gliadin polypeptides can bind to opiate receptors in the brain. Opiates include heroin, morphine and opium. Our bodies can generate chemicals which bind to opiate receptors which are termed ...'endorphins'. However, when a substance comes from outside the body, it is termed 'exorphin'. Gluten derived exorphins can induce a feeling of mild euphoria. This might explain why scoffing into a big bowl of pasta or bread can be seemingly so pleasurable for some (as in me!!!). It might also explain why we cannot break up with wheat! However, eating gluten does not make us 'high' like other opiates, it actually makes us HUNGRY. Just a few shifts in amino acids and gliadin in modern high-yield, semi-dwarf wheat has made it a POTENT APPETITE STIMULANT. So, bottom line, modern wheat is not the same as it used be. It can act as an appetite stimulant, driving us to eat more and may very well be the opiate of the masses. Let's get our digestive systems healthy and strong so this does not happen to us! 06.01.2022 FOODS THAT SUPPRESS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM poor immune function increases your risk for infections and can slow or prevent your recovery. The following is a list of foods that can increase inflammation in your body and decrease healthy immune function: * Red meat - high source of saturated fat that can trigger inflammation * Fried foods - high source if saturated fat * Added sugars- the sugar in one can of soft drink can reduce your white blood cells capacity to destroy germs ...by 40%! This immune suppressing effect may begin within 30 minutes of consumption and last for up to 5 hours! * Refined grains- such as white flour, instant white rice and pasta, contain fewer nutrients and little fibre compared to the natural grains that they were derived from. Recent reports have indicated that increasing your fibre intake strengthens your immune system, so swap out white bread and refined foods for whole grain alternatives such as oats, barley, wild rice and brown rice. * Alcohol - high in sugar and taxing on your liver * Processed foods and chemicals/preservatives/additives- the usual culprits we should avoid anyway! Please take care and we need to what we can to boost our own immunity! To schedule an appointment, please go to Clinic Connect. We can skype ir zoom or chat on the phone! 06.01.2022 Iron is essential during pregnancy to support expansion of the red blood cell mass, growth of maternal tissues, and for fetal and placental development. It is present in all human cells and has several vital functions, including carrying oxygen from the lungs to the tissues in the form of haemoglobin. Iron present in the body beyond what is immediately required for functional purposes (for example, being able to stand upright without feeling dizzy!) is stored primarily as fe...rritin. Iron is transported in the blood by the protein transferrin. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to iron deficiency due to the high demand for iron associated with growth in both the mother and fetus/placenta. There is a spectrum of iron deficiency ranging from iron depletion to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). In iron depletion, the amount of stored iron (ferritin) is diminished but the amount of transport and functional iron may not be affected. What this means however is that there are no stores to mobilise, should the body require it. In IDA, inadequate amounts of stored, transport and functional iron result in impaired haemoglobin synthesis. Not what we want at any stage of life let alone during pregnancy. There are dietary changes that can be implemented but quite often, this is not enough and an oral supplement is required. There are new forms of iron (with cofactors) that not only improve absorption but do not cause the dreaded side effect often associated with 'old school' oral iron supplements....CONSTIPATION. Of course, your GP, OBGYN or midwife will be keeping a close eye on your iron status during pregnancy but if you would also like additional support, I am here for you. 05.01.2022 AMH stands for anti-Mullerian hormone- the hormone produced by the granulosa cells surrounding your follicles. Why is this hormone important? Well, it is a reliable marker of ovarian reserve- or how many eggs you have. Higher AMH may be a sign that you have a higher egg and follicle count, and lower AMH may be a sign that you have a lower egg and follicle count. AMH can also be a tool to determine premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), menopause timing, PCOS (usually a higher... level of AMH due to a high number of follicles in early development), ovarian reserve, IVF outcomes (it can be predictive of ovarian response, namely poor and hyper-responses) and potential egg freezing. However it is important to remember that although AMH is a valuable test to undertake, it cannot determine egg quality, guarantee pregnancy or confirm infertility BUT is is THE most reliable marker for understanding your unique fertility curve. Please come to see me for natural os assisted reproduction support. 05.01.2022 Athletic amenorrhea or exercise induced amenorrhea is when women stop having monthly menstrual cycles due to a higher intensity and/or frequency of exercise. It can be seen in females from any sport and at any level from recreational to elite. The common cause of amenorrhea in athletes is functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA). In FHA, the hypothalamus is 'silenced' from releasing hormones that ultimately allow for ovulation and a normal menstrual cycle. FHA is caused by ...low energy intake (food), exercise, weight loss, stress, or a combination of these factors. Now, exercise is good for the body and mind, but, it is all about balance. When the amount of energy expended during exercise is not balanced by adequate nutritional intake, the body begins to shut down organ systems that are not absolutely essential for survival. This includes the reproductive system. We need to restore balancevto the body, increase oestrogen levels and get that cycle back to 'normal'. Not having a cycle is not normal! For any reproductive health issues, please come to see me. 05.01.2022 Spotting before your period? This 'breakthrough' type minor bleeding is not uncommon, but is not necessarily 'normal'. The colour can vary from brown, pink, dark red. And the reasons for this spotting could be very simple and nothing to be concerned about, however if you are trying to conceive, or it is 'unusual' and there are other associated symptoms of concern,, please have it investigated by your GP or gynaecologist. Several underlying causes can include: * low progester...one * ovulation (if it is mid-cycle) * a short luteal phase * the oral contraceptive pill * peri-menopause * endometriosis * uterine or cervical polyps * fibroids * PCOS * stress * thyroid issues * pelvic inflammatory disease * sexually transmitted infections It could also be implantation bleeding or spotting in the early stages of pregnancy (which can be terrifying but normal). 04.01.2022 CBD AND ENDOMETRIOSIS. There are currently a number of clinical trials investigating the use of medicinal cannabis for endometriosis and its associated debilitating symptoms. How? Well, according to research already conducted, cannabinoids may help endometriosis in the following ways: * preventing cell migration * inhibiting cell proliferation * preventing damage to your nerves and blood vessels * desensitising your pain nerves... * modulating your immune response * inhibiting inflammation in your body The addition of CBD to dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, natural supplements and herbs, can really offer a holistic approach to the disease and its recurring symptoms. CBD is LEGAL and approved by the TGA but please check the quality and suppliers of the oils. Incorporating cannabinoids into your self-care routine may be a good option, especially if purely pharmaceutical or medical treatment is falling short. 04.01.2022 Green is good! And so is Estriol (E3). It is known as 'the protective oestrogen '. It is made in the ovaries and by conversion of adrenal hormone precursors. The placenta makes significant amounts during pregnancy to protect the baby. It has been demonstrated that higher levels of E3 protect against MS; lower levels have been associated with breast cancer; it acts as an antioxidant in the brain; it protects the ovaries from PCOS; it reduces markers of cardiovascular risk; it ...can have an immunosuppressive effect on autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, thyroiditis, uveitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
