24.01.2022 Recently published research from Sweden, that studied women's experience of POP after childbirth identified the overarching theme of being irreparably damaged... this theme consists of four categories: taken by surprise, restricted life, neglected by care providers, and psychological intrusion. We recognise how confronting an initial diagnosis of pelvic floor muscle damage and/or POP may be. For new mothers the balance of feeling joy for their child while experiencing the shock, regret, anger, grief and sadness of managing symptoms. Plus the nature of POP being ‘secret women's business’ has meant that most women haven’t sought help or spoken about their symptoms before. We often hear women talk about feelings of isolation and failure. This is why we are working to #breakthesilence about this taboo topic in women’s health. We strongly feel that this new research highlights the importance of discussion during antenatal care so that mothers aren’t left asking ‘why didn’t they tell me’? As highlighted in our position statement (link in our comments) we would also like to see better postnatal support for early intervention, the 6 week check is not enough. We are asking our maternity care workers to #starttheconversation.

By completing the survey, you will be helping health care professionals understand how you feel when you are in pain. There is also a chance to win an Amazon voucher by participating in the survey. 09.01.2022 This was said to ABTA’s co-founder after she was prescribed one by her pelvic health physio. Pessaries can be an excellent conservative treatment option for POP.... So what is a pessary? A pessary is a plastic or silicon product designed to hold up descended pelvic organs inside the vagina. Pessaries don’t care at all about the age of the tissue they’re supporting; they just hold things up. Women of all ages can have the benefits of using a pessary. Many women can find the thought of using a pessary quite-confronting, mostly due to lack of information and unfamiliarity. However, a well-fitted pessary cannot be felt and can be life-changing to the the person using it, at any age. It can empower women to move, lift and exercise without the constant fear of the prolapse worsening. Pessaries can be self-managed and a viable alternative to surgery. It may not be a solution to everyone, but it’s a valid, conservative management option that might be worth a try. However, we highly recommend you seek the care of a specialist health professional to ensure you have the correct fit. *Did you know that pessary use has been around since before the days of Cleopatra (who is believed to have been treated for prolapse)? You may not get a green light straight away, but you will never get a red light. There is always some exercise you can do that is safe for YOUR pelvic floor.
