25.01.2022 This 19th Century Unequal Treaty with Japan (includes a Dutch volume) is a complete five volume set of the Ansei Five-Power Treaties in Japanese translation. After Japan was forced to open in 1853 with the arrival of Commodore Perry, Western powers were eager to trade with Japan. Townsend Harris, the first American Consul-General, negotiated with the Japanese Shogunate and exchanged a trade and taxation treaty betwen the United States and Japan in July 1858. Treaty signings w...ith other four countries, Russia, France, Britain and Holland, followed in the same year. The treaties were very unequal terms. Terrible from the Japanese point of view with extraterritoriality for foreign residents and no autonomy in taxation, and they are often referred as the "Unequal Treaties of Ansei". The Emperor did not approve the treaties with foreign powers. Consequently, domestic conflicts between Shogunate and other samurais who opposed to opening the country erupted. These unequal treaties were to stay in place until 1899 causing many significant issues for Japan throughout most of the Meiji period. These Japanese translations were printed in 1859 and distributed widely so that the treaty contents could be understood by the Japanese people. At the back of the Dutch volume, names of those who were involved in the publication are listed. . Complete set of 5 volumes. Volume 1: [Treaty with Russia and Taxation Rules], 25 leaves. Volume 2: [Treaty with Britain and Taxation Rules], 28 leaves. Volume 3: [Treaty with France and Taxation Rules], 27 leaves. Volume 4: [Treaty with America and Taxation Rules], 28 leaves. Volume 5: [Treaty with Holland and Taxation Rules], woodblock printed on 28 folded Japanase paper/washi leaves. 23.01.2022 Fifty Three Stages of the Tokaido (Past and Present). 22.01.2022 1940S PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF A JAPANESE WOMEN'S DEFENCE ASSOCIATION BRANCH IN TOKYO This is a fascinating photographic album showing the branch activities of the Greater Japanese Women's Defence Association in Nishi-Sugamo in Tokyo around 1942. The association was founded in 1932 and absorbed into a bigger women's association in 1942. Its members consisted of housewives. The women adopted white aprons with sashes across the shoulder as their uniform and they mainly provided ...community support in farewelling departing soldiers to the battle fields. Their organisation structure resembled the military where high ranking generals' wives were appointed to the main honorary commanding roles. In the community, the association members carried out their patriotic duties in their white aprons with enthusiasm. The album starts with the Empress' poem and the six point declaration of Japanese women follows. There, the members make pledge to carry out their duties to maintain moral, bring up healthy children, keep household in order, and take care of injured soldiers and bereaved families. The photographs cover their activities in the community and at ceremonies. 19.01.2022 This is the 8th year Asia Bookroom has collected donations to support Teacher Llami Sherpa (middle of the second photo) teaching at Shree Sagarmatha School in Bung, in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. The teacher we are sponsoring, Llami Sherpa, is in her 30s. Apart from being their teacher Llami is also an excellent role model for the young girls in school. Unfortunately Nepalese girls often do not finish their schooling because of family demands to help out in the home and ...sometimes these girls have to marry, even at this very young age. If you were able to help by making a donation it would really make a difference to Llami and her students. As in previous years each donation will be represented on our Christmas tree by a decoration representing different amounts - see below for some suggested donations. With your help we hope to have a brightly coloured, fully decorated Christmas tree by December 25th, symbolising another year of funding for "our" teacher Llami Sherpa. This is how our Christmas tree "works": A donation of $10 will pay Llami's wages for approximately half a day and a silver coloured Christmas decoration will be placed on our Christmas tree to symbolise your donation A red decoration represents $20 and pays her wages for approximately 1 day A blue decoration represents $50 and pays her wages for approximately 2.5 days A green decoration represents $100 and pays her wages for approximately 5 days A gold decoration represents $200 and pays her wages for approximately 10 days Or you may give another amount - every donation is appreciated - great or small. For example $5 still makes a big difference As your contribution goes directly to Classrooms in the Clouds, please: Bring cash into Asia Bookroom, or a cheque or money order made payable to Classrooms in the Clouds. Donate by credit card or from a Paypal account by using this link https://paypal.me/CITCNepal If you use this link, you will see the default amount comes up in pounds sterling (Classrooms in the Clouds is registered in the UK), however just click the little arrow beneath "GBP" and you can select Australian dollars. 19.01.2022 A Guide to the City and Suburbs of Canton Large folding map of Canton and suburbs. 1889. Dr Kerr’s A Guide to the City and Suburbs of Canton was the most successful tourist guide for Canton/Guangzhou in the late nineteenth century, being reprinted from the 1870s into the first decade of the twentieth century. In this edition many of the streets of the Western Suburbs, the Old and New Cities, Eastern Suburbs and Honam are listed and brief details about what might be found ...on the street are given. Suggested itineraries and excursions are listed and a large folding map of the city by American missionary Reverend D. Vrooman is included with place names in Chinese and English. The author, John Glasgow Kerr (1824-1901), was a physician and medical missionary to China with the American Presbyterian Mission. He arrived in Canton in 1854 and took over the Ophthalmic Hospital at the Guangzhou Boji Hospital (The Canton Hospital), where he worked for 47 years. Dr Kerr pioneered mental health care in China, and in 1887 became the first president of the Medical Missionary Association of China. He translated thirty-four volumes of Materia Medica into Chinese as well as other medical books. He was respected and appreciated by the Cantonese for his humanitarian efforts, and a favourite tour guide for visitors into the 1870s. He died in 1901 and was buried in the Protestant cemetery outside Canton. (Wikipedia). 19.01.2022 Did you know Japan has a long tradition of creating elaborate prints to be swapped and traded for decorating shrines? This Printer’s Sample Album has 135 colour woodcuts. The works collected in this printer's sample book consist of prints mostly made in the mid to late 1920s. In addition to the shrine and temple votive slips, the contents include a decorated card celebrating the enthronement of Emperor Hirohito in 1926, New Year’s cards for 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930, and a nu...mber of cards advertising the Umesono Teahouse in Asakusa - a teahouse in the grounds of the Umesono Temple which was founded in 1854 and still exists today. Many are colourful, and some of the votive slips are delightfully decorated with coloured images of comical faces. Includes votive slips from temples and shrines (Senjafuda and Nosatsu), New Year's cards and advertising cards for companies. Senjafuda and Nosatsu have had a long tradition but in the last hundred years or so they evolved into elaborate prints made more to be swapped and traded than pasted on shrines. The vibrancy of the colours, the humour portrayed in many of the images, as well as the quality of the examples, conjures up another era. 17.01.2022 This Complete Map of The World is a very attractive brightly coloured woodblock world map, folds into paper covered card covers with handwritten title on upper cover, housed in a modern box with toggles, legend and an illustration of the Earth lower section. Explantory notes in Japanese around the map, publication details on left edge with chops. Occasional tiny holes in the map itself and a few places of worming on the margins, paper on covers a little insect dama...ged in places, generally very good. 37 x 65.5cm. . .[Edo]. 6 [ 1853]. Described as being based on a Dutch map, this map gives a rather sketchy and fanciful vision of the world divided into six continents, each given a different colour: Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Rimia (?= Africa), Mekaranika (the Antarctic, including Australia), and the Cold Region of Night Countries (Arctic). The general outlines and depiction of the six continents is quite similar to that of 18th century maps by the famous Japanese mapmaker Nagakubo Sekisui, although Nagakubo's maps are more accurate in their depiction of the outline of Japan and other regions. On this map Central Asia is marked as the "Country of Women", northern Europe as "Country of Small People", and South America as the "Country of Tall People". One group of islands to the south of Japan is labelled "Robbers" (The mapping of Europe is also quite sketchy, although, perhaps predictably, "Holland" is clearly marked, as is Jagatara (Jakarta) in Asia. Antactica is still marked with the inscription "Chinese people have not been to this area, so the landscape and people are unknown" (an inscription which also appears on 18th century maps by Nagakubo Sekisui). On the other hand, the depiction of North America includes "Virginia" and "Republic Politics () Washington". The seas of the world are labeled "Great East Sea (which is the western Atlantic), Little East Sea (the Pacific), Little West Sea (the Indian Ocean) and "Great East Sea" (the western Atlantic). The depiction of Japan itself is quite sketchy, with very small dots for Ezo (Hokkaido).

17.01.2022 COLORADO FAMILY ALBUM FEATURING A TRIP TO MANCHURIA AND JAPAN IN THE 1920S A delightful family photo album containing photos mostly taken in the early 1920s although some, which appear to have been taken in Colorado, appear to be earlier. Nearly half of the photos were taken in Japan and Manchuria, others were taken in Colorado, in Hawaii and on board ship during crossings of the Pacific on the "Siberia Maru" and "Korea Maru". These latter include lively shots of plays, gam...es and pillow fights as the passengers while away the time on the long voyage. It is likely that the owner of the album had a connection to the mining industry, as there are images of mines in Leadsville, Colorado, and a large group photo labelled "Burma Mines Ltd, Namtu Detachment C. Co, 34th UB Btln, IDF, Nov. 3rd 1918". The photographs of Manchuria are particularly interesting. Many were taken in Shenyang (then known as Mukden), and as well as images of famous landmarks like the Peiling Tombs, there are numerous street scenes of markets, spirit money sellers etc. There are also photos of rural Manchuria showing horse teams, a blacksmith at work, and ancient stupas, as well as a rather disconcerting photo of a smiling western man holding a skull in each hand - perhaps excavated from some sort of archaeological dig. The family also travelled to Japan, visiting Nagasaki and Nikko, of which several photos are included in the album. There are also a group of 4 postcards showing scenes in Nagasaki. They seem to have been keen sportspeople - there are photos of tennis and golf playing and ice-hockey, and of surfing off Honolulu's Waikiki Beach. Over half of the photographs are family pictures or were taken in Colorado showing mountain scenes, log cabins etc. Over 400 black and white photographs held in place with photo corners or tipped in with paper hinges, a few loose presented in a photograph album with black card leaves. Modern gilt fasterners and cord ties. Some occasional silvering at edges, a small number have creases at lower corner or are chipped at the lower corner but overall both the album and photographs are in very good condition. No date. (circa 1920). Stock ID: 171089

14.01.2022 A peek at one of our items featured in the #bostonbookfair Tuberculosis Prevention Poster Circa 1925 This very striking Japanese government poster was published to raise awareness for the prevention of tuberculosis. It bears the campaign slogan "Train your body!" in Japanese. The artists style is strong and dynamic as the young men wrestle like sumo wrestlers while in the background an industrial area with smoking chimneys can be seen. The poster was produced by the Japan...ese Department of Public Health of the Social Welfare Agency in Ministry of Interior in the 1920s. Tuberculosis was a serious disease in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s continuing to plague the country through until the end of the Pacific War. Its impact was such that it became known as the "nation ruining disease". Infection was severe particularly among the factory workers where conditions were poor and they worked and slept in crowded conditions. During the 1930s, the patient numbers increased to 1.3 million (2% of the population) and over 130,000 people died. To try to combat this the government carried out numerous public health campaigns for disease prevention of which this poster is an example. This dramatic poster is aimed at young men working in factories hoping to inspire them to remain healthy and keep fit. The artist signed as Kitajima on the poster unfortunately we have not been able to locate any information about him. Scarce, we could find no libraries which hold this. Stock ID: 170403

13.01.2022 Up first on our #AmsterdamBookFair2020 Showcase REFERENCE SKETCHES FROM JAPANESE ARTIST'S COLLECTION. SKETCHES OF A DUTCH SEA CAPTAIN, A CHINESE MERCHANT AND HIS WIFE. .... This Collection of five funpon () or artists' sketches by Kitajima Ten in ink on Japanese paper are by Kitajima Ten. Funpon or artists' sketches were used by Japanese artists as references for future works. As Japanese artists rarely worked from life, artists would collect as many funpon as possible so when called upon to paint a picture of a particular subject they would have images from which to work from, in a manner similar to building a reference library. We have not found a reference to the artist who made these sketches, Kitajima Ten but it seems likely he was a minor artist in Nagasaki who had observed the Dutch and Chinese merchants and would likely have received commissions to paint scenes depicting foreigners. These sketches were almost certainly based on earlier Japanese paintings showing Chinese and Dutch merchants. The sketches in this group depict a Dutch Sea Captain and Chinese merchants reflecting the situation in Japan at the time. In the Edo period, only the Dutch and Chinese were allowed to trade with Japan in Nagasaki. The Chinese merchants lived in the Chinese quarter in Nagasaki and had relative freedom to go around the town, whereas the Dutch merchants were confined on a small artificial island called Deshima or Dejima. Due to Japan's isolation from the world at that time Japanese people were especially fascinated by the exotic appearance and culture of foreign people. Pictures of foreigners were always in good demand, and in the late Edo period, especially after Japan opened up to the West in 1858, a lot of prints and paintings depicting foreigners were produced by ukiyo-e artists and traditional painters. No doubt these sketches would have been used as the basis of many. Stock ID: 157329

09.01.2022 As we adapt to a COVID-19 world, we have been enjoying finding new ways to connect with you. Today at 2-11PM GMT (Friday 5 June 2020) @abararebooks invites you to partake in Firsts Online a digital rare book fair! Asia Bookroom will be participating alongside 120 Exhibitors from 15 countries offering rare and beautiful works including books, maps, manuscripts and ephemera. Highlights? Biased as we are, we think all the items are very interesting and unusual! If forced to make... some choices: *The huge very scarce brightly coloured decorative map published by the Japanese navy in 1940 to celebrate their 2600th anniversary [Commemorating the 2600th Year. Pictorial Story of Japan as the Sea Nation]. *The beautiful copy of The European in India; From a Collection of Drawings, By Charles Doyley with its stunning full page colour plates *The wickedly salicious novel by de Martel and de Hoyer Silhouettes of Peking *The fascinating unauthorised Japanese news sheet or kawaraban the title of which translated to Illustrated Interpretations of 70 Types of Small Civil Crimes. It is amazing how many ways there were to fall foul of the authorities in 1876! We are very lucky to have this kind of fair it’s not elitist, it’s not specialist, you don’t have to be a scholar, you just have to be someone with an immense thirst for the glory of books. 06.01.2022 Please join me in signing this petition to stop the NLA from irrevocably changing the important Asian Collections they offer to the world. The National Library of Australia has one of the finest Asia related collections in the world. Scholars from across the world visit the National Library both in person and via the Internet to use this important and significant resource. Built up by knowledgeable and devoted librarians since the 1950s this collection is a significant factor in making the National Library of Australia relevant to the broad population of today's Australia. We are no longer a white Anglo run nation and need to reflect this.
